The efficient domination number F(G) of a graph G is equal to the maximum influence of a packing, that is, F(G) is the maximum number of vertices one can dominate under the restriction that no vertex gets dominated more than once.

Origen and Evagrius present a theology of prayer that provided the spiritual foundation for later monasticism, both in the East and in the West. Indeed, the influence of Origen and Evagrius on Christian spirituality is perceptible even today. Yet the works of both writers were repeatedly condemned by ecumenical councils, beginning with the Second Council of Constantinople in 553. In this thesis, I attempt to shed light on this paradox by setting the spiritual works of each writer within the context of the theological controversies of his time. The Spiritual Potential Of Poetry, Carl Schlueter

This paper presents poetry as a possible means of spiritual formation and transformation. Through the example of two poets, Seamus Heaney and Matsuo Basho, as well as two poetic devices, symbol and metaphor, poetry proves capable of radically engaging and converting both spiritual attention and action. In addition, the colloquial and connotative nature of poetic language renders poetry capable of expressing spiritual matters in a manner more quotidian and concrete. As a result, spiritual edification through poetry can offer a more affective and accessible alternative to the sometimes unaccommodating technical and abstract aspects of theological and philosophical prose.

This study examines how a state system of higher education, located in the Rocky Mountains area of the United States, allowed faculty members from the state’s public institutions of higher education to control the design and implementation of a pilot assessment of statewide general education courses. One of the primary reasons faculty were allowed to control the assessment process was to assuage the commonly held fear by faculty, academic departments, and institutions that they could be punished for the poor assessment results of their students who took the pilot assessment. Problem 12.82 of the Kourovka Notebook asks for all ordered pairs (n,m) such that the symmetric group Sn embeds in Sm as a maximal subgroup. One family of such pairs is obtained when m=n+1. Kalužnin and Klin [L.A. Kalužnin, M.H. Klin, Certain maximal subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups, Math. Sb. 87 (1972) 91–121] and Halberstadt [E. Halberstadt, On certain maximal subgroups of symmetric or alternating groups, Math. Z. 151 (1976) 117–125] provided an additional infinite family. This paper provides evidence and understanding of how Syncletica, a fourth and fifth century Alexandrian ascetical woman, developed her ascetical life; first within the movement of consecrated virgins which was evident in the Christian world of her time, and later in life as an anchorite, where she became renowned within the category of a desert mother. This paper stresses the value of using modern historical method to discuss Syncletica, as well the need to understand her within the spiritual uniqueness of the eastern Christian desert tradition, of which is claimed as representative.

Personality assessment of three al-Qaida leaders in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States – Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Mohamed Atta – provides evidence for a rudimentary model of the leadership roles required for a global-reach terrorist operation: (1) a narcissistic, charismatic leader devoid of core values beyond personal self-interest, adept at exploiting others in pursuit of his grandiose ambitions (e.g., bin Laden); (2) a strategic-thinking “true believer” without constraints of conscience regarding the level of violence he is willing to employ in his single-minded pursuit of mission (e.g., al-Zawahiri); and (3) unobtrusive, disciplined operatives …

In the last ten years, we have seen frequent news reports on the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus in the Indian subcontinent, each one stressing the dire economic and social consequences if urgent attention is not paid to the problem. Although the Indian government has responded by adopting many policies and by establishing an organization — the National Aids Control Organization (NACO) — to deal specifically with HIV awareness, treatment for HIV infected individuals, and prevention of further spread of HIV/AIDS, many critics do not find these measures adequate.

This essay is an examination of the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross as celebrated in Western Christianity at the beginning of the third millennium. While mentioning the historical events that occasioned its admission to the liturgical calendar, this essay focuses on the euchology and theology of the feast with a view to identifying its contemporary significance. With these foundations in mind, specific pastoral-liturgical suggestions are made to enrich the celebration of this feast in a parochial setting.

The question of how Heloise, the renowned twelfth-century abbess of the Benedictine women’s monastery called the Paraclete, obtained a classical education in the twelfth century French culture is important and not adequately answered at present. The purpose of this paper is to discover a reasonable understanding of how she acquired her high quality education and what conditions made it possible for her to learn three languages, be highly literate, and successful in her role as a religious abbess. This paper is an exegesis of the difficult pericope of Ephesians 5:21-33, a stumbling block to many, but truly a cornerstone when viewed through Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. After a brief introduction familiarizing readers with the passage, this paper shows how the section is treated by
Patristic authors (with Origen and Saint Jerome as examples), by feminist theologian E. Elizabeth Johnson, and by Peter T. O’Brien (who demonstrates an Evangelical Protestant view). This study examined how science and mathematics university faculty at a Hispanic-serving Institution were engaged in the preparation of future and current schoolteachers. The science and math faculty participation in teacher education was part of a grant from the National Science Foundation. Results indicate that science and math faculty are eager to participate in teacher education activities but are concerned that their participation will adversely affect tenure and promotion decisions.

We demonstrate Rabi flopping at MHz rates between ground hyperfine states of neutral ⁸⁷Rb atoms that are trapped in two micron sized optical traps. Using tightly focused laser beams we demonstrate high fidelity, site specific Rabi rotations with cross talk on neighboring sites separated by 8  μm at the level of 10⁻³. Ramsey spectroscopy is used to measure a dephasing time of 870  μs, which is ≈5000  times longer than the time for a π/2 pulse.

Complicating The Poor Widow’S Gift: Exegesis On Mk. 12:41-44, Timothy Traynor

The dominant understanding of the story of the widow’s offering was thought to be as praise and encouragement for generous giving for much of the history of its interpretation, but was completely reversed and called into question by A.G. Wright’s 1982 study. Attempts to reclaim the widow as a model for piety and methods of contemporary biblical scholarship have added significantly to the subsequent dialogue with Wright making the widow’s offering an interesting narrative reflection on the early Christian community and a lens to look at women’s contributions to the ancient church.

The Church does not canonize saints; it canonizes causes, lifestyles, and attitudes. This is increasingly evident in the causes for lay people, especially married couples. Although it has made recent strides toward a more balanced theology of sexuality, the Catholic Church will not be comfortable canonizing happily married, sexually active couples until Mary is valued as a disciple and not exclusively as a virgin.
