Silence No More: A Transformative Transcendental Phenomenological Study Investigating The Experiences Of Teen Mothers Who Go To College In The Rural Southeast, Angela Rogers May 2010

Silence No More: A Transformative Transcendental Phenomenological Study Investigating The Experiences Of Teen Mothers Who Go To College In The Rural Southeast, Angela Rogers

All Dissertations

According to ethnographer Kristin Luker (1996) 'most poignantly, in the vast majority of cases, giving birth while still a teenager is a pledge of hope, an acted-out wish that the lives of the next generation will be better than those of the current generation, that this young mother can give her child something that she never had.' Unfortunately, teen pregnancy prevention rhetoric, which often perpetuates the negative socially constructed image of teenage mothers, frequently focuses on the economic costs that teen pregnancy is reported to have. Not enough research has been devoted to the individual experiences of teen mothers, in …

A Historical Analysis Of Property Reform Act Of 2006, David Pitts

All Dissertations

The South Carolina Property Tax Reform Bill was signed into law in June 2006 creating a new way of generating money for public education in South Carolina. The Property Tax Reform Act eliminated 100% of the fair market value of 4% owner-occupied property for the purposes of taxation for school operations. Additionally, the Act increased the sales tax by 1% on most goods. Further, the Act limited a local school district's ability to raise additional revenue.
The following qualitative study used historical research design with an emphasis on oral history. The researcher used the wealth neutrality theory for the theoretical …

Acculturation, Alienation, And Hiv Risk Among The Russian-Speaking Drug Users In Estonia, Anna Skosireva May 2010

Acculturation, Alienation, And Hiv Risk Among The Russian-Speaking Drug Users In Estonia, Anna Skosireva

All Dissertations

In 1991, dramatic socio-political changes transformed the Russian-speaking population in Estonia from the governing class to an immigrant minority virtually overnight absent of a relocation or emigration process. New citizenship and language policies, and associated socioeconomic hardships, drove many of the Russian-speaking population to the edges of the society. These processes were amplified by traditional acculturation challenges that led to increased psychological distress, rising indicators of social exclusion and social alienation, and poor health, including HIV/AIDS and substance abuse, in this linguistic group during the past two decades. Given the growing relevance of cultural issues in this group as well …

The Accuracy Of Observers' Estimates Of The Effect Of Glare On Nighttime Vision: Do We Exaggerate The Disabling Effects Of Glare?, Stacy Balk May 2010

The Accuracy Of Observers' Estimates Of The Effect Of Glare On Nighttime Vision: Do We Exaggerate The Disabling Effects Of Glare?, Stacy Balk

All Dissertations

Designing headlights involves balancing two conflicting goals: maximizing visibility for the driver and minimizing the disabling effects of glare for other drivers. Complaints of headlight glare have increased recently. This project explored the relationship between subjective (discomfort and expected visual problems) and objective (actual visual problems) consequences of glare. Two experiments - a lab-based psychophysical study and a field study - quantified the accuracy of observers' estimates of the effects of glare on their acuity. In both experiments, participants over-estimated the extent to which glare degraded their ability to see a small high contrast target. Observers' estimates of the disabling …

A Solution-Based Approach To The Fabrication Of Novel Chalcogenide Glass Materials And Structures, Nathan Carlie Mar 2010

A Solution-Based Approach To The Fabrication Of Novel Chalcogenide Glass Materials And Structures, Nathan Carlie

All Dissertations

Chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) are well known for their large optical nonlinearities and high infrared transparency, and are candidate materials for next-generation thin film-based planar infrared (IR) optical applications. They are also known, however, to possess low thermal and mechanical stability as compared to oxide glasses. Traditional physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods used for the deposition of these materials as thin films often suffer from low deposition rates, deviation from stoichiometry, and cannot coat over complex surfaces. In order to retain the attractive optical properties of ChGs while enabling new fabrication routes and hybrid and composite material systems, we have developed …

The Development Of A Mesenchymal Stem Cell Based Biphasic Osteochondral Tissue Engineered Construct, Scott Maxson

All Dissertations

The ability of human articular cartilage to respond to injury is poor. Once cartilage damage has occurred, an irreversible degenerative process can occur and will often lead to osteoarthritis (OA). An estimated 26.9 million of U.S. adults are affected by OA. Osteochondral grafting is currently used to treat OA and osteochondral defects; however, complications can develop at the donor site and defect area. Osteochondral tissue engineering provides a potential treatment option and alternative to osteochondral grafting. The long term goal of this work is to develop a tissue engineered mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) based osteochondral construct to repair cartilage damage. …

Head ultrafiltrate and reconstituted dry powder showed maximum while gizzard showed the minimum metal chelating activity. Free radical …

Molecular Mechanics Studies Of Enzyme Evolutionary Mechanisms, Manoj Singh Jan 2010

Molecular Mechanics Studies Of Enzyme Evolutionary Mechanisms, Manoj Singh

All Dissertations

In the current dissertation, closely related studies to quantify the mechanism underlying enzyme evolution have been discussed. The HIV-1 protease and beta-lactamase enzymes were used as model systems for these studies. These are well known enzymes that are associated with drug resistance and are associated with the pathogenic diseases, and therefore, developing molecular level understanding of drug resistance through these enzymes has fundamental as well as practical importance.
In chapter 2, the relationship between errors in modeled protein structures and associated binding affinity predictions to small molecules is established. The results of this study are applicable in addressing a wide …

The Relationship Between Energy Balance Understanding And Measures Of Wellness, Stephanie Fishel-Brown Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Energy Balance Understanding And Measures Of Wellness, Stephanie Fishel-Brown

All Dissertations

Much emphasis on the fight against obesity is placed on education and food labeling, yet very little research has been performed to measure how much people know about energy balance and the relationship of this knowledge to measures of wellness. The primary objective of this study was to determine if college students' (N = 262) performance on an energy balance questionnaire is associated with measures of wellness. Performance on the questionnaire as a whole was not significantly correlated (p > .05) with body mass index (BMI; rs = .04), percent body fat (rs = .05), waist to hip ratio …

Influence Of Shear Key Performance On The Fatigue Life Of Adjacent Beam Bridges, Sara Roberts Jan 2010

Influence Of Shear Key Performance On The Fatigue Life Of Adjacent Beam Bridges, Sara Roberts

All Theses

Adjacent beam bridges, such as box beams and hollow core bridges have been one of the most popular forms of precast prestressed bridges in the past. Recently, an awareness of major durability problems has led owners to make improvements to the old standards or move away from the system completely. These issues usually stem from the breakdown of the shear key which provides continuity between adjacent members. This research focuses on determining the best improvements that will reduce durability issues and increase the bridge's service life.
A review of previous research performed on adjacent beam bridges is performed, focusing on …

Unrooted Stem Cutting Physiology; Water Use And Leaf Gas Exchange Of Severed Stem Cuttings, Peter Alem Jan 2010

Unrooted Stem Cutting Physiology; Water Use And Leaf Gas Exchange Of Severed Stem Cuttings, Peter Alem

All Theses

Stem cuttings are one of the most frequently used and successful methods of vegetative plant propagation. The understanding of unrooted cutting physiology, especially gas exchange and water flux, is crucial for successful propagation of healthy plants. Prior to root initiation, water uptake is limited and leafy stem cuttings are most vulnerable to wilting.
Experiments were carried out in the greenhouse with poinsettia cuttings to determine water uptake, photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance from the time of severing to rooting, including time spent in storage. Water uptake through the severed stem was investigated in the laboratory and growth chamber. Cutting gas …

A Survey Of The Vascular Flora Of Beaufort County, South Carolina, Daniel Payne Jan 2010

A Survey Of The Vascular Flora Of Beaufort County, South Carolina, Daniel Payne

All Theses

Beaufort County has historically been one of the most poorly botanized counties in the state. Geographically, it lies farther from the major research institutions than most other counties and has therefore received little attention from modern botanists. Major waterways, numerous private communities and an oppressive summer climate further complicate botanical research. Beaufort has one of the fastest growing human populations in the state. Natural areas are rapidly being converted into residential and commercial developments. An understanding of the county's flora is necessary to focus conservation efforts to preserve critical habitat and develop management plans for maintaining biodiversity. This project was …

Production And Characterization Of Novel Air Filtration Media, Elizabeth Skomra Jan 2010

Production And Characterization Of Novel Air Filtration Media, Elizabeth Skomra

All Dissertations

HEPA and ULPA filtration systems have proven to be an advantageous instrument in removing common contaminants from the air. However, an increased pressure drop due to the build-up of particulates on the filters results in its inevitable decrease in performance. Improving current filtration systems would include increasing collection efficiency all the while either maintaining or reducing the differential pressure drop in order to extend the life of the filter. One method of improving collection efficiency would be viable by increasing the amount of surface area within the filter media by glass fibers because of their inherent quality of being smaller …
