Model Updating By Adding Known Masses And Stiffnesses, Philip D. Cha, Lisette G. De Pillis
Model Updating By Adding Known Masses And Stiffnesses, Philip D. Cha, Lisette G. De Pillis
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
New approaches are developed to update the analytical mass and stiffness matrices of a system. By adding known masses to the structure of interest, measuring the modes of vibration of this mass-modified system, and finally using this set of new data in conjunction with the initial modal survey, the mass matrix of the structure can be corrected. A similar approach can also be used to update the stiffness matrix of the system by attaching known stiffnesses. Manipulating the mass and stiffness correction matrices into vector forms, the connectivity information can be enforced, thereby preserving the physical configuration of the system, …

Black Holes And The Sym Phase Diagram, Miao Li, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian

Making combined use of the matrix and Maldacena conjectures, the relation between various thermodynamic transitions in super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and supergravity is clarified. The thermodynamic phase diagram of an object in DLCQ M theory in four and five non-compact space dimensions is constructed; matrix strings, matrix black holes, and black p-branes are among the various phases. Critical manifolds are characterized by the principles of correspondence and longitudinal localization, and a triple point is identified. The microscopic dynamics of the matrix string near two of the transitions is studied; we identify a signature of black hole formation from SYM physics.

A Theoretical Study Of The Electronic Coupling Element For Electron Transfer In Water, Newt E. Miller '99, Matthew C. Wander '97, Robert J. Cave
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The electronic coupling element for electron transfer between a donor and acceptor in water is examined using simulations combining molecular dynamics and semiempirical quantum mechanics. In the first phase of the simulations a model donor and acceptor are solvated in water, using realistic potentials. Following equilbration, molecular dynamics simulations are performed with the donor, acceptor, and water at approximately 300 K, under periodic boundary conditions. In the second phase of the simulation, the electronic coupling element between the donor and acceptor is calculated for a number of time slices, in the presence of the intervening water molecules (those having a …
The Bordalo Order On A Commutative Ring, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith
The Bordalo Order On A Commutative Ring, Melvin Henriksen, Frank A. Smith

If R is a commutative ring with identity and ≤ is defined by letting a ≤ b mean ab = a or a = b, then (R,≤) is a partially ordered ring. Necessary and sufficient conditions on R are given for (R,≤) to be a lattice, and conditions are given for it to be modular or distributive. The results are applied to the rings Zn of integers mod n for n ≥ 2. In particular, if R is reduced, then (R,≤) is a lattice iff R is a weak Baer ring, and (R,≤) is a distributive lattice iff R …
Film Review: The Thin Red Line, James Morrison
Film Review: The Thin Red Line, James Morrison
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
In Malick's new film, his first in 20 years, this tension is gone. The Thin Red Line, based on James Jones' 1962 novel of World War II, pursues the strains of ardent feeling of the director's earlier work but, without seeming to renounce it, forsakes the irony. The core of the film follows an American battalion's fight against the Japanese for a hill at Guadalcanal, and although this core provides dramatic grounding for the movie, it is flanked at both ends, beginning and end, by stretches of storytelling so fragmentary, so mercurial, they're nearly abstract.

Parallel Traditions: State Folk Dance Ensembles And Folk Dance In "The Field", Anthony Shay
Parallel Traditions: State Folk Dance Ensembles And Folk Dance In "The Field", Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
In this introductory essay I put forth several concepts and elements that can be profitably examined before any meaningful analysis of these ensembles and their choreographic output can be properly addressed. These include issues of authenticity and representation, as well as the variety of social and technical restrictions and limitations—political, financial, artistic—faced by the artistic directors of these companies. Thus, the main intent of this essay is to establish a theoretical and methodological model for the study of professional and semi-professional state folk dance ensembles as well as the numerous amateur performing and exhibition groups that emulate the state dance …

Objective: Measures of drug use, law-abidance beliefs, sensation seeking, fear of victimization, high-risk group identification, self- protection needs and behaviors, and demographics were investigated as longitudinal predictors of violence perpetration among 870 high-risk adolescents. Method: Self-reports from the same youth were obtained 1-year apart. Results: In addition to baseline violence perpetration, marijuana use, relatively youn1 age, male sex, high-risk group self-identification, low perceived efficacy of the police department, and nonavoidance of dangerous places predicted later perpetrated violence. Conclusion: Personal and social factors beyond baseline violent behavior predict risk for future violent behavior.

Was Joseph Smith A Gentleman? The Standard For Refinement In Utah, Richard Bushman
Was Joseph Smith A Gentleman? The Standard For Refinement In Utah, Richard Bushman
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The question of refinement cut even more deeply in Utah in the early days when the governance of the territory was at issue. The Latter-day Saints worked with a double handicap in striving to win respect from eastern travelers: in addition to the usual doubts about civilization in the West, the visitors were skeptical about Mormon religious fanaticism. Travelers came expecting that the poor credulous fools who submitted to the rule of Brigham Young would lack education, manners, taste, and intelligence—in short, would be as degraded as the woodcutters Trollope sighted along the banks of the Mississippi. The Saints for their …

A Poet, A Planter, And A Nation Of Farmers, Richard Bushman
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
For the past few days in Harpers Ferry we have been inventing and reinventing American nationalism in a marvelous variegation of scholarly papers. We have heard about nationalism and travel, nationalism and antislavery women, nationalism and male identity--and southern artisans, and black nationalists, and even luxury hotels. Although we try to put ironic distance between ourselves and the more egregious forms of nationalism, the papers seem to share the popular fascination with American identity. We cannot resist staring into history and asking who we are as a nation, how did we come to be so wonderful, and why have we …

Extensions Of Power Transition: Applications To Political Economy, Jacek J. Kugler
Extensions Of Power Transition: Applications To Political Economy, Jacek J. Kugler
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
This is a paper about theory in political economy terms and political economy in theoretical terms. It unifies power transition theory and applies it to the central questions that now confront political economists. Will trade wars emerge as the security challenge declines? What are the economic effects of integration, trade and growth? How will economic patterns influence international power relationships? This paper offers a preliminary bridge whereon practitioners and theorist may meet to assess the challenges that lie at the intersection between politics and economics. The economic collapse and political dissolution of the Soviet Union left policymakers and scholars searching …

This paper describes the development and testing of the Medical Concept Mapper as an aid to providing synonyms and semantically related concepts to improve searching. All terms are related to the userquery and fit into the query context. The system is unique because its five components combine humancreated and computer-generated elements. The Arizona Noun Phraser extracts phrases from natural language user queries. WordNet and the UMLS Metathesaurus provide synonyms. The Arizona Concept Space generates conceptually related terms. Semantic relationships between queries and concepts are established using the UMLS Semantic Net. Two user studies conducted to evaluate the system are described.

Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador
Deslanting The Lens, Lui Amador
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Deslanting the Lens examines the historical and sociological implications of how Asian men have been represented in popular American film. From the early days of “yellowface” to caricatures like Long Duck Dong, Asian men have been relegated to perpetual foreigner status in American cinema. This paper will explore why the portrayal of Asian men has been limited to very specific ideas about Asian and Asian Americans are in society. This analysis will also include how socio/political events have shaped and influence popular perceptions about Asians, that inform how Asian men continue to be depicted in film.
