Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina Dec 2020

Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Science is often limited or absent in an early education classroom. It is important to give children an outlet to experience science in the classroom or through lesson plans. Having science at an early age can provide children the opportunities to build up their reasoning, to question things about the world, and later in life to feel more confident in other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities or areas. To address this need, I created a 3-day program for 3 to 5 year-olds at Little Learners of Aptos School in Aptos, California.

Teaching Effective And Empathetic Communication Amongst Social Service Volunteers, Jillian Van Every Dec 2020

Teaching Effective And Empathetic Communication Amongst Social Service Volunteers, Jillian Van Every

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Some volunteers working with homeless clientele may lack effective communication skills needed while working with this population. As a result, volunteers may not form a trusting relationship with the clients and limit their ability to provide effective services. As a result, I have created a one-day training for volunteers at the Gathering For Women in Monterey, California.

Casa Advocates Virtual Activities Capstone, Ana Guadalupe Borrayo-Garcia Dec 2020

Casa Advocates Virtual Activities Capstone, Ana Guadalupe Borrayo-Garcia

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

CASA of Santa Cruz County's mission is to provide court-appointed volunteers and for every foster youth to receive the love and care that they deserve. The majority of the foster youth being served are Hispanic, but there are not enough bilingual volunteers, and this is a problem. One Contributing factors include a lack of awareness to become volunteers, cultural understanding of the role of a CASA volunteer, and that bilingual advocates need relevant outreach material to understand. Consequences include foster youth being on a waitlist, not enough advocates to serve the population in need, and a lack of support for …

Revamping The Guitar Curriculum: Adapting Piano Methods And Theory To Apply To The Guitar, Brian Cummings Dec 2020

Revamping The Guitar Curriculum: Adapting Piano Methods And Theory To Apply To The Guitar, Brian Cummings

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this paper I will discuss the importance of a well rounded pedagogy for beginning guitar students. The existing piano pedagogy has courses outlining lessons and appropriate pieces correlated with lessons in technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, as well as other disciplines; the guitar has nothing like it to compare. I will also include a creative project including examples of piano lessons adapted for the guitar, including theory ideas using the fretboard, finding intervals on one string using half steps represented by the frets, and example pieces that offer a variety in genres, among other things. I will draw …

Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan Dec 2020

Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This Capstone project is focused on providing families and students with meals during a pandemic. The majority of students in California are enrolled in a free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Due to virtual learning it has become increasingly more difficult for students to be provided with school meals. Schools give opportunities to students to pick up their lunches but this is not beneficial for students with a lack of transportation or two working parents. Food security is important to allow students to focus in school and continue developing correctly both physically and mentally. Evidence shows that the number …

Non-Prescription Sale Of Syringes In Monterey County, Ruby Ramos Godoy Dec 2020

Non-Prescription Sale Of Syringes In Monterey County, Ruby Ramos Godoy

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

I have interned for the Monterey County Health Department in the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Prevention Program. My capstone project focuses on a community problem targeting high HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) transmission rates in Monterey County. There are high HIV and HCV rates among injection drug users (IDUs), and many of our community members may partake in these harmful activities. The cause of these high HIV and HCV rates is because there are limited amounts of pharmacies selling syringes without a prescription, which then causes the high HIV and HCV rates among injection drug users and low life expectancy …

Emotional Resilience For Educators, Rosario Martinez Dec 2020

Emotional Resilience For Educators, Rosario Martinez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this project is to implement a program that will provide emotional resilience support for educators in the Salinas Union High School District. This is a voluntary program designed to support staff through the work of Elena Aguilar. The purpose of this capstone project is for school staff to have that extra support and resources. The problem is classroom teachers do not have the necessary training to deal with students' problems. One contributing factor that relates to the problem is about students experiencing trauma and ACE (adverse childhood experiences) in their lives/community. As a result, they carry more …

Learning Together- The Importance Of Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Education, Myra C. Sanchez Dec 2020

Learning Together- The Importance Of Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Education, Myra C. Sanchez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Studies have shown that parental involvement is key for children to succeed in education, confidence, and their overall development (Project Appleseed, n.d.). However, lack of parental involvement and scarcity of resources and tools for parents to be involved in their children’s education are immense issues that the community of Greenfield, CA face. Children with parents who are actively involved in their education have been linked to higher achievements and graduation rates (Project Appleseed, n.d.). Yet, when parent participation is lacking for a child, they are faced with difficulties that affect their day-to-day life, potentially negatively impacting them in the long …

Insufficient Post Secondary Information For Students In Alternative Schools, Iradzeni Salazar Dec 2020

Insufficient Post Secondary Information For Students In Alternative Schools, Iradzeni Salazar

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Access to resources and information is important as it can help individuals plan for future goals and enable them to become successful in life. Youth Alliance is a non-profit organization that serves children, youth, and families through culturally relevant services and programs. A program offered is Restorative Justice, which serves at-risk youth at a continuation school. Few students continue with their education after graduating from alternative schools. Insufficient knowledge about post-secondary education as well as discouragement from peers and academic history contribute to students not acquiring a post-secondary education. Consequently, these individuals are more likely to fall into the school …

Affinity & Affection: Adolescent Relationships, Andrea Lopez Dec 2020

Affinity & Affection: Adolescent Relationships, Andrea Lopez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Epicenter is a resource center that serves LGBTQ, system affected, and at-risk youth in Monterey County. The problem being addressed is the misconceptions about healthy and unhealthy relationships among youth. Many young people fall into unhealthy relationships or behaviors due to not understanding the healthy characteristics of relationships. A contributing factor to unhealthy relationships is youth seeing examples of unhealthy relationships in their home. This leads them to practice or seek out similar unhealthy behaviors that they have witnessed. Unhealthy relationships harm a young person’s perception of relationships and the behaviors they will exhibit later in life. The consequences …

Surviving Or Thriving? The Impact Community Collaborations Can Make During A Global Pandemic, Stephanie Hernandez Dec 2020

Surviving Or Thriving? The Impact Community Collaborations Can Make During A Global Pandemic, Stephanie Hernandez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The focus of this Capstone Project is to determine the ways in which communities and schools can help support students and their families during the current global pandemic. This is an important issue for students and their families because due to differences in socioeconomic status, language, and/or time and availability, not all resources are available to everyone. It is argued that regardless of the presence of any of the factors listed above, all students and their families deserve equitable access to resources, especially in the midst of a global pandemic when resources are not as readily available as they normally …

Popular Music Genres: The Past 70 Years To Now, Natasha Lugo Dec 2020

Popular Music Genres: The Past 70 Years To Now, Natasha Lugo

Each decade is connected to specific music genres that are remembered years later. Artists who imprint in listeners’ minds, album collections or playlists stand out within certain decades from when they were the most successful. Awards, charts, album sales and performances are some of the accomplishments that help the growth of their careers through the public. With pop and rap being the favored genres, proven in the charts from the last twenty years, what is today’s music genre? Using a few artists as reference along with collecting data, starting from the 1950s and ending with the 2010s, this paper will …

Datashare Monterey County Website, Audra Ketchem Dec 2020

Datashare Monterey County Website, Audra Ketchem

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The DatashareMontereyCounty website was created by combining Conduent technology and knowledgeable staff from the Monterey County Public Health Department. This project attempted to solve the disengagement between many people in Monterey County and health interventions/prevention initiatives set in place by the health department. Two contributing factors related to community disengagement were that residents were not always aware of works the health department was attempting to promote and the complexity of health data (statistics). The main focus of the project demonstrates how understanding health information may or may not impact decision making. When concepts are difficult to understand this can deter …

Teaching Early Literacy Skills To Low-Income Mothers, Cecilia Regalado Dec 2020

Teaching Early Literacy Skills To Low-Income Mothers, Cecilia Regalado

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many mothers categorized as low-income families don't know how to help their children to build language and early literacy skills. One of the main reasons why they are struggling a lot is because of the lack of knowledge and resources within their grasp group. Thus, the Women’s, Infant’s, and Children’s is a federal assistance program that will help many of them to provide early literacy techniques, food coupons, and healthy eating habits to pregnant women and children under 5 years old. For example, by teaching children how to talk or just making simple conversations at an early age will help …

This project will address the importance of implementing SEL both at home and in the classroom. The goal of this capstone project is to create a better understanding of how essential social emotional learning is across environments, especially in the home and school environments. This is an important issue because a student's success may be dependent on the stability of their overall wellbeing and ability to cope with a range of feelings …

Increasing Kindness Among Kindergartners, Jenique Ruiz Dec 2020

Increasing Kindness Among Kindergartners, Jenique Ruiz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In most elementary school curriculum, prosocial skills, such as the concept of kindness, are absent. When young children have underdeveloped prosocial skills, social relationships and academic achievement may suffer. Children need these skills to successfully interact with their peers and to achieve academic goals. To address the lack of prosocial skills in the curriculum, I have created a three-part lesson about kindness for Kindergarten students at George C. Marshall Elementary School in Seaside, California.

Because of lack of affordable housing in the area, and the lack of available resources, many men and women, as well as families find themselves without a place to stay. Homelessness Prevention Contacts Datasheet establishes a list of rental property management companies and landlords who may be interested in some of the programs provided by the Coalition. These programs provide …

Basic Body Mechanics To Prevent Injuries During A Transfer, Veronica Gutierrez Dec 2020

Basic Body Mechanics To Prevent Injuries During A Transfer, Veronica Gutierrez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There are many informal caregivers providing support to loved ones in their homes. Hiring a trained professional is often a financial barrier, leaving no choice but for a spouse or close relative to assume the role of primary caregiver. Many of them risk injury due to improper body mechanics when helping the patient transfer from one position to another. A four question survey was created to ask the public if they had any caretaker experience, felt comfortable performing a patient transfer, if they knew what a gait belt was, and finally if they were interested in learning a technique that …

Increasing Math In Preschool Curriculum, Riley Burnett Dec 2020

Increasing Math In Preschool Curriculum, Riley Burnett

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In many preschools and early childhood educational settings, mathematical skill-building is lacking in the curriculum. With a lack of math curriculum in a preschool classroom, students may not have foundational mathematical skills, may lack problem-solving skills, and may lack self-confidence in math skills. To help children develop their math skills, I designed a virtual math activity for 3 to 4-year-old preschool children attending Monterey Peninsula College Early Childhood Lab School.

How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn Dec 2020

How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important aspect of school that does not get enough attention. Many teachers are currently focused on academics instead of how their students are handling the stress of COVID-19 and distance learning. The focus issue addressed in this capstone project is SEL in the online classroom during COVID-19. An argument is made that distance learning causes a higher rate of mental health problems in students in all grade levels. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of teachers, parents, and students. The three action options that emerged from an analysis of the data included: …

Support Group Outcomes For Hispanic/Latinx Youth In San Benito County, Melina M. Perez Dec 2020

Support Group Outcomes For Hispanic/Latinx Youth In San Benito County, Melina M. Perez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Relatively few studies have examined the process of social/cultural detachment in Hispanic/Latinx youth in the United States. The present project adopted an ecological approach to this issue, focusing on mezzo- and macro-level support system development, apart from micro-level character and self-esteem development. Educational disparities, acculturation stress, and familial oppression lead to gaps between parents, adolescents, schools, and the community. Following the Youth Alliance’s philosophy that youth need support from multiple sources in order to heal, the Guiding and Understanding Individuals in Achieving Success (GUIAS) program’s support group sessions bridge these gaps. By offering culture- and gender-sensitive lessons, hands-on activities, and …
