Science is often limited or absent in an early education classroom. It is important to give children an outlet to experience science in the classroom or through lesson plans. Having science at an early age can provide children the opportunities to build up their reasoning, to question things about the world, and later in life to feel more confident in other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities or areas. CASA of Santa Cruz County's mission is to provide court-appointed volunteers and for every foster youth to receive the love and care that they deserve. The majority of the foster youth being served are Hispanic, but there are not enough bilingual volunteers, and this is a problem. One Contributing factors include a lack of awareness to become volunteers, cultural understanding of the role of a CASA volunteer, and that bilingual advocates need relevant outreach material to understand. In this paper I will discuss the importance of a well rounded pedagogy for beginning guitar students. The existing piano pedagogy has courses outlining lessons and appropriate pieces correlated with lessons in technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, as well as other disciplines; the guitar has nothing like it to compare. I will also include a creative project including examples of piano lessons adapted for the guitar, including theory ideas using the fretboard, finding intervals on one string using half steps represented by the frets, and example pieces that offer a variety in genres, among other things. I have interned for the Monterey County Health Department in the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Prevention Program. My capstone project focuses on a community problem targeting high HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) transmission rates in Monterey County. Relatively few studies have examined the process of social/cultural detachment in Hispanic/Latinx youth in the United States. The present project adopted an ecological approach to this issue, focusing on mezzo- and macro-level support system development, apart from micro-level character and self-esteem development. Educational disparities, acculturation stress, and familial oppression lead to gaps between parents, adolescents, schools, and the community. Using new application forms, surveys, and a presentation, a program was created to engage volunteers when volunteering became almost nonexistent. The presentation was the centerpiece of the engagement program. The presentation will inform volunteers how to stay engaged, learn new skills, and find gainful employment through volunteering.
