Two Departments, Two Models Of Interdisciplinary Peer Learning, Julianne A. Wenner, Paul J. Simmonds Sep 2017

Two Departments, Two Models Of Interdisciplinary Peer Learning, Julianne A. Wenner, Paul J. Simmonds

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

On graduation, teacher candidates (TCs) are typically underprepared to teach science, particularly physical science, whereas physics graduates frequently lack training in teaching or effective communication. In response, we created two models for interdisciplinary peer learning where TCs were paired with either graduate or undergraduate physics students. In both models, physics students teach TCs content knowledge relevant to a given area of either classical or quantum physics, which TCs then use to design and implement a short lesson for K-5 students. Overall, both models were successful, with the two sets of students reporting benefits in each case. Affordances for TCs included …

From Archive To Evidence: Historians And Natural Resource Litigation, Jennifer A. Stevens

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Within the field of natural resource law are several specific areas that are well suited for the historian’s skillset and knowledge. The deployment of the historian’s tool box when conducting research in the legal world, however, can result in deliverables which vary significantly from those found in the academy, as they range widely in both size and scope and do not always use the full range of a historian’s skills. New technological platforms provide consulting historians with creative opportunities to disseminate valuable information and sources and enhance important scholarly debates.

User-Friendliness And Virtual Reality: A Hypertextual Reading Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé, Jason Herbeck Jul 2011

User-Friendliness And Virtual Reality: A Hypertextual Reading Of Alain Mabanckou’S Verre Cassé, Jason Herbeck

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Set in a seedy Congolese bar seemingly far removed from the ever-present influences of globalization (aside perhaps from the occasional copy of Paris-Match), Alain Mabanckou's Verre Cassé (2005)2 does not have a single foot- or endnote. In fact, the novel has no such peritext3 whatsoever aside from its title and two short inter-titles that serve to identify the two parts of the work as premiers feuillets and derniers feuillets. However, this absence of peritext is not in the least surprising given that the novel does not contain any lexical, idiomatic or vernacular terms specific to the …

The Early Nuclear Age And Visions Of Future War, David M. Walker Jan 2009

The Early Nuclear Age And Visions Of Future War, David M. Walker

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The images of a nuclear war bringing the end of the world or something close to it have been firmly planted in the human imagination since 1945. Fiction and speculative nonfiction writers quickly followed John Hersey’s factual and journalistic Hiroshima with fantastic imaginings of nuclear Armageddon, especially once the Cold War began. In the early nuclear age, visions of future wars often fell into the nuclear holocaust, end-of-the-world genre. Writers imagined future nuclear war as a no-win exchange of strategic city-busting nuclear weapons. This tradition continued until the end of the Cold War. There are well-known works, such as 1963’s …

Leisure Reading: Impacting The Affective Domain Across Borders, Stan Steiner, Dong Ro Shin, Diane Boothe Jul 2006

Leisure Reading: Impacting The Affective Domain Across Borders, Stan Steiner, Dong Ro Shin, Diane Boothe

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Comparison of literacy in South Korea and the United States through the lens of a ten-year old exemplifies a comparative survey study conducted in both the United States and South Korea. The ongoing study measures students' reading habits and their perceptions of the adults in their lives as readers over a seven-year period. Some questions that have driven the study include, "What affective filters influence development of students' reading skills? Do teachers model leisure reading interests and habits through example? Do teachers share books with students or parts of books they are reading? Do teachers generate frequent discourse with their …

Maxine Hong Kingston, Charles L. Crow Jan 2004

Maxine Hong Kingston, Charles L. Crow

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

“The history of the intermingling of human cultures is a history of trade—in objects like the narwhal’s tusk, in ideas, and in great narratives.”

—Barry Lopez, Arctic Dreams

The Woman Warrior (1976), Maxine Hong Kingston’s first book, made her famous. Her arrival coincided with, and helped to fuel, an awareness of literature by women and ethnic minorities, and a change in the literature studied in high-school and college classrooms. Today Kingston is one of the most frequently taught of living American authors. Her works are studied in courses in English, women’s studies, Asian studies, ethnic studies, postmodern literature, postcolonial literature, …

Janet Campbell Hale, Frederick Hale Jan 1996

Janet Campbell Hale, Frederick Hale

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

In the early 1970s, at an early stage of the “Native American Renaissance,” a period that witnessed a recrudescence of tribal literary efforts, historical consciousness, and demands for civil rights, Janet Campbell Hale quietly began to make her mark on the Native American cultural landscape. A young member of the Coeur d’Alene tribe, she was then residing in the San Francisco area and had written a novel for adolescents titled The Owl’s Song, which inaugurated a noteworthy career in ethnic fiction and has gone through many printings. Like most other Native American authors, Hale has not been highly prolific …

Mark Medoff, Rudolf Erben Jan 1995

Mark Medoff, Rudolf Erben

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Mark Medoff grew up in the East, lives in the New West, but dreams of the Old West. In his essay “Adios, Old West,” he nostalgically calls himself a “child of the Old West” (1). Medoffs protagonists likewise romanticize the Western American past because they associate it with their own youthful innocence. But they learn to live with the far less romantic realities of an increasingly eastemized West. Like Medoff, they know that cowboys can no longer be role models. While they regret the decline of the heroic tradition, they realize that they cannot emulate outdated stereotypes. In his drama, …
