Thunder Without Lightning : Working Class Discontent In The United States, 1929-1937, Robert S. Mcelvaine Jan 1974

Thunder Without Lightning : Working Class Discontent In The United States, 1929-1937, Robert S. Mcelvaine

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In nature, thunder cannot exist without lightning. In the political realm, however, the two are separable. Rumblings of discontent can, and often do, occur without the firebolt of revolution.

The depression of the 1930s was a decade of thunder on the left in the United States. The working class became increasingly conscious of itself and discontented with the existing socio-economic system. The peals were always there, and they often reached crescendos. Yet the full force of the tempest never broke upon America in the thirties. The pages that follow explore the thundering and seek to explain how Franklin D. Roosevelt …

Reactions Directed Towards The Synthesis Of Selenobiotin, Robert L. Martin Jan 1974

Reactions Directed Towards The Synthesis Of Selenobiotin, Robert L. Martin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The original purpose of this investigation was to prepare and isolate selenobiotin. Several attempts were made to prepare 3-(-carboxymethylseleno-)-alanine, a critical intermediate in the proposed synthetic sequence, without success. In view of this unexpected difficulty, the object of the research was changed to the synthesis of cis-3,4-ureyleneselenophane, the parent fused heterocyclic system. The formation of this molecule has been realized, and alternate pathways have been tested which establish a model system for the synthesis of selenobiotin.

The Figure Of The Child In Selected German Novellen Of The Nineteenth Century, Frank Peter Strozyk Jan 1974

The Figure Of The Child In Selected German Novellen Of The Nineteenth Century, Frank Peter Strozyk

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The primary focus in this study will at all times be on the significance of the child for an understanding of a particular Novelle. However, this study will also attempt to draw certain parallels between the authors of this time span and to show what themes—in relation to the child—predominate in the Novelle.

The child in a Novelle can function in many ways: 1) the child can be merely a biological product of a certain sex and age having certain physical characteristics; 2) he can be exposed to physical dangers such as cold, hunger, and beatings; 3) he can be …

Factor Substitution And Complementarity In Greek Manufacturing, 1961-70, Kimon John Constas Jan 1974

Factor Substitution And Complementarity In Greek Manufacturing, 1961-70, Kimon John Constas

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

...It is the purpose of this thesis to proffer two alternative hypotheses about the behavior of the ratio of salaried employees to wage—earners and to use these to explain the changing relationships of salaried to non-salaried workers in Greek manufacturing.

The first proposition states that changes in the ratio are due to changes in relative factor prices. More precisely, if the wage rate rises faster than the salary rate, substitution of salaried labor for non-salaried will lead to differential shifts in labor demands, and, therefore, the ratio will rise.

The second hypothesis states that, because of capital influx to Greece …

The Danzig Churches: A Study In Late Gothic Vault Development, Helene C. Kaplan Jan 1974

The Danzig Churches: A Study In Late Gothic Vault Development, Helene C. Kaplan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

A meaningful investigation of the Danzig Late Gothic sacral architecture can be achieved only by a close look into the changing political and social conditions in the city.

All the medieval churches of Danzig belong to the rare monuments of the Middle Ages whose original plans are preserved in a most remarkable work written by Bartel Ranisch (1648-1701), a man whom we may truly call the first art historian of Danzig. Without Ranisch’s work, the thirteen churches and four monasteries would have been impossible to describe, and their exact plans but a guess of historians.

However, an historical interest in …

The Individual And Society In The Novelas De La Primera Época Of Benito Pérez Galdós, Clark M. Zlotchew Jan 1974

The Individual And Society In The Novelas De La Primera Época Of Benito Pérez Galdós, Clark M. Zlotchew

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Throughout his career, Galdós' preoccupation with the relationship between the individual, and the society in which he lives, remains constant. The interaction between society, and the members who compose it, can be observed at times as confrontation, at other times as cooperation, compromise, or submission of the individual to society. A close reading of the novels of Galdós suggests that he had his own personal vision of what society, and life in society, signified. In this vision, "society" embraces all the elements of the varied groupings of a collective nature in which the individual finds himself or herself, and consists …

A Study Of Photoperiodic Inhibition Of Flower Development In Lemna Persusilla 6746, Linda Lee Kirkland Jan 1974

A Study Of Photoperiodic Inhibition Of Flower Development In Lemna Persusilla 6746, Linda Lee Kirkland

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Lemna perpusilla 6746, a short day plant on Hutner's medium, is induced to flower by a single long night. Resulting flower primordia develop normally in short days but regress in unfavorable photoperiods such as long days or continuous white light. Flower development following a single long night is approximately proportional to the number of long nights given in the post-inductive treatment. The critical night length for flower development is approximately one hour shorter than that for flower initiation. Unfavorable photoperiods arrest the growth and differentiation of flower primordia. These primordia eventually break down and the adjacent axillary fronds enlarge.

Flower …

Earliest Cambrian - Latest Proterozoic Ichnofossils And Problematic Fossils From Inyo County, California, Gerald Burton Langille Jan 1974

Earliest Cambrian - Latest Proterozoic Ichnofossils And Problematic Fossils From Inyo County, California, Gerald Burton Langille

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

A stratigraphic collection of ichnofossils and problematic body fossils was made from Lower Cambrian to Upper Proterozoic (sensu Cloud, 1973) strata of Inyo County, California. Specimens were collected from the Wyman, Reed, Deep Spring, and Campito Formations in the White-Inyo Mountains and compared to material from the correlated Stirling and Wood Canyon Formations in the Death Valley area. No recognizable metazoan fossils were observed in the conformable units beneath the Stirling (Noonday Dolomite and Johnnie Formation).

Twenty-five types of ichnofossil are described: Archaeonassa aff. fossulata, ?Arenicolites sp., Arthropod Trace Form A, Beerbowerichnus montenegris (ichnogen. et ichnosp. …

The Ten American Painters: Definition And Reassessment, Kenneth Coy Haley Jan 1974

The Ten American Painters: Definition And Reassessment, Kenneth Coy Haley

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In 1897 three artists, John Twachtman, Childe Hassam and Julian Alden Weir, decided to leave the established Society of American Artists in New York. This small group was to serve as a core of a larger organization later named the "Ten American Painters. "(Fig. 1). Wishing to hold independent exhibitions in New York several other painters were asked to join. These men included Edward Simmons, Willard Metcalf, Edmund Tarbell, Joseph DeCamp, Frank Benson, Thomas Dewing, Robert Reid and Abbott Thayer. Thayer first agreed to join but later changed his mind. The New York Times, however, was unaware of his …

A Quantitative Comparative Study Of The Jewish And Palestine Political Elites (1920-48), Taisir Najm Nashif

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The object of this work is to study the backgrounds and circulation of the Jewish and Palestinian Arab political elites. Chapter I is a discussion of elite theory and its relevance for the study at hand, as well as a delineation of who constitutes the two elites and what features of their backgrounds and careers this study is concerned with.

Chapters II and III present a detailed quantitative analysis of the two elites’ backgrounds and circulation patterns. Circulation patterns are related to changes in or continuance of social background characteristics as indicators of recruitment patterns and political aims. Chapter IV …

Capital And Output In The Mexican Economy, 1939-67, Mary Ann Throup Jan 1974

Capital And Output In The Mexican Economy, 1939-67, Mary Ann Throup

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This study examines capital/output ratios for Mexico within the framework of Bićanić’s theory of development. Mexico’s declining capital coefficient over the 1939-67 period conforms to Bićanić’s third stage where external and internal economies are experienced. Sectoral investigations indicate declining coefficients in the infrastructure sector are largely responsible for this situation while an aggregate analysis presents significant evidence of internal and external economies resulting from the elimination of “bottlenecks” on the supply side.

Narrative Design And Heroic Definition In Chretien De Troyes' Erec Et Enide, Marla Mudar Iyasere Jan 1974

Narrative Design And Heroic Definition In Chretien De Troyes' Erec Et Enide, Marla Mudar Iyasere

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Little is known about Chrétien de Troyes the man. Whatever is said about him as an individual or about the order and date of his writings is entirely a matter of conjecture, for there is virtually no evidence except for the little offered by the poems themselves. While Chrétien's life's history is lost, his work remains. To value Chrétien's work, it must first be understood, and understanding will derive primarily from careful attention to the poetry itself; the focus of this study will be on Chrétien's earliest and most frequently misunderstood work, Erec et Enide. The perplexity surrounding the …

Kinetic Studies Of Ammonia-Oxygen Flames, David Emlyn Hughes Jan 1974

Kinetic Studies Of Ammonia-Oxygen Flames, David Emlyn Hughes

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Since the early interest of Henry in burning ammonia with electric sparks, the literature of ammonia oxidation has been extensive. The major efforts have been industrially related and concern themselves with catalytic oxidation and its mechanism. The flame oxidation of ammonia has attracted more modest interest because of the relative poorness of ammonia as a fuel. Lunge, for example, found that an ammonia-air flame would hardly burn at room temperature and could be maintained only with constant heating. This dissertation concerns itself with the mechanism of the flame oxidation of ammonia and therefore the reactions that transform ammonia and oxygen …

Kinetics Of Alkali Metal Ion Self-Exchange On Polystyrene Sulfonate Resin In Dimethyl Sulfoxide-Water Media, Robert Clark Johnston Jan 1974

Kinetics Of Alkali Metal Ion Self-Exchange On Polystyrene Sulfonate Resin In Dimethyl Sulfoxide-Water Media, Robert Clark Johnston

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Rates of alkali metal cation self-diffusion in a polystyrene sulfonate ion exchange resin and in the external solution have been measured over a range of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-water mixtures from 0 to 70 mole % DMSO. Interpretation of results is simplified by the choice of this system which exhibits relatively constant resin swelling, fairly high dielectric constant and virtually no solvent preference over the entire composition range.

The self-diffusion coefficient of Na+ in the external solution shows a moderate decrease from 0 to about 40 mole % DMSO after which it tends to level off with increasing DMSO. In …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Deor, The Ruin And The Wanderer, Gary I. Rubin Jan 1974

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Deor, The Ruin And The Wanderer, Gary I. Rubin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

With Bartlett and Huppé on which to rely, I will deal with three Old English poems: Deor, The Ruin, and The Wanderer. It is my belief that if we subject these poems to the kinds of analysis suggested by Bartlett and Huppé, we will be able to see that rhetoric is a determining factor in theme and structure. The elusive nature of the poems, their seeming illogic at times, may well be explained by the fact that the audience did indeed know the theme, the message, of the poem and that the delight of the poem was …

Developmental Morphology Of Calothrix Parietina (Nägeli) Thuret [= Gloeotrichia Echinulata (J.E. Smith) Richter], Kutbul Rahman Khan Jan 1974

Developmental Morphology Of Calothrix Parietina (Nägeli) Thuret [= Gloeotrichia Echinulata (J.E. Smith) Richter], Kutbul Rahman Khan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Drouet (1973) on a morphological basis and the present author in his laboratory and field studies on the life gyre (cycle) and developmental morphology have shown that Gloeotrichia echinulata (J.E. Smith) Richter and Calothrix parietina (Nägeli) Thuret are the same species. According to International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (1972), C. parietina takes taxonomic priority.

In this alga, the akinetes (spores) are not the major means of over-wintering. Short hormogones and filaments of the form known as C. parietina are actually the common winter forms.

There is a direct relationship between different temperatures (10, 15, 21° C) and the frequency of …
