Glacial Geology Of The Western Catskills, James Totten Kirkland May 1973

Glacial Geology Of The Western Catskills, James Totten Kirkland

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Ic0 flow directions on the glaciated Appalachian Plateau in central New York were from the Adirondack Hountains. This is demonstrated by both striae directions and erratic provena..-1ce studies. No evidence for more than one Wisconsin glaciation as suggested by Rich (1935) could be found. Theories for local glaciation during the decline and after the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet were also unsubstantiated. The East and West Branches Delaware River had different styles of daglaciation. The West Branch is characterized by zones of stagnation. The length of a zone is controlled by relief of the valley and corresponds to that …

A Cash Flow Theory Of Conglomerate Mergers, Edward Barry Leviton Jan 1973

A Cash Flow Theory Of Conglomerate Mergers, Edward Barry Leviton

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

There have been three periods of intensive merger activity in the United States. The first merger movement of major significance occurred at the turn of the century, and its peak years were between 1898 and 1902. This early merger movement in many respects was the most significant of the merger waves. It saw the transformation of many industries, initially characterized by many small and medium sized firms, into those in which one or a few very large firms dominated. Nelson has said that in this period the pattern of concentration characteristic of twentieth-century American business was formed and matured. The …

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of Tm¹⁶⁹, Eugene Clark Deci Jan 1973

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of Tm¹⁶⁹, Eugene Clark Deci

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The distribution of electrical charge in the nucleus of Tm169 was determined by measurement of the energies of the X rays of muonic atoms of Tm169.

The values of the energies of the K X rays and the L X rays were calculated from a model assuming an anisotropic Fermi distribution of charge, and compared to the treasured values. The assumed distribution is a function of three parameters; a half radius, a surface thickness, and a measure of the anisotropy.

The values of the parameters were varied to find the values that gave the best agreement with …

The Dramaturgy Of Sławomir Mrozek, Regina Grol-Prokopczyk Jan 1973

The Dramaturgy Of Sławomir Mrozek, Regina Grol-Prokopczyk

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is the dramaturgy of Sławomir Mrożek. The study was triggered by a striking disproportion in Mrożekian criticism. There is a multitude of minor articles and reviews, but not a single monographic study devoted to the dramatist and his work. Such a state of affairs resulted from some accidental factors. In Poland where Mrożek is very well known and appreciated, the official ban imposed on him during the past five years precluded any book on him from appearing. In the West, the absence of a full-length critical study on Mrożek might be attributed to the fact …

Broadening And Shift Of Lines In The Electronic Spectrum Of The Bromine Molecule, Thomas Warren Tolbert Jan 1973

Broadening And Shift Of Lines In The Electronic Spectrum Of The Bromine Molecule, Thomas Warren Tolbert

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is divided into two main sections. The first of these is a treatment of this research from both the conceptual and the analytical points of view. These parts of the discussion encompass Sections II through VI. In these sections, the techniques used in obtaining the experimental values are alluded to but are not necessarily presented in detail. These details are to be found in the second main division of the dissertation--namely, in the various appendices. Numerous cross—references appear throughout the dissertation, and it is helpful to the reader to familiarize himself with the topics found in all sections …

Relations Between Subgroups And Quotient Groups Of Finite Groups, John Hsiao-I Ying Jan 1973

Relations Between Subgroups And Quotient Groups Of Finite Groups, John Hsiao-I Ying

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Subgroups and quotient groups are elementary concepts and at the same time important tools for investigating the structure of groups. Though a group is usually not determined by its proper subgroups and proper quotient groups, significant estimates can often be deduced from information about these derived structures. The information gathered from subgroups on the one hand and quotient groups on the other hand is essentially complimentary in nature. This suggests that subgroups and quotient groups, in a rather general sense, might be considered as dual concepts. This dissertation is concerned with a special form of duality, and we will first …

Agricultural Policy-Making In The Eisenhower Administration, David Miller Tiffany Jan 1973

Agricultural Policy-Making In The Eisenhower Administration, David Miller Tiffany

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation traces agricultural policy—making during the Eisenhower Administration. Four specific goals are involved. First, by providing a general review of the Eisenhower farm programs, this work continues the efforts of many scholars to provide a collection of monographs tracing American agricultural policy. Since several of the programs put into operation during the Eisenhower Administration differed substantially from those of previous years, a somewhat detailed examination of these new programs is justified. Second, this study investigates the procedures followed by the Eisenhower Administration in developing its farm policy: these reveal a good deal about the operations of the Administration, as …

Investment In Human Capital And The Nonwhite-White Unemployment Differential, Curtis Lloyd Gilroy Jan 1973

Investment In Human Capital And The Nonwhite-White Unemployment Differential, Curtis Lloyd Gilroy

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of the differential incidence of unemployment between white and nonwhite male workers in the U.S. labor force. The general question to which this study addresses itself is to what extent can the higher incidence of nonwhite compared to white unemployment at a point in time and over a period of time be explained by differences in certain characteristics of the respective labor forces.

To measure and compare the relative unemployment burdens of white and nonwhite workers, the unemployment differential will be investigated. The differential can be of two types: the relative differential, denoted by the ratio …

An Examination Of The Sacramental Vision Of Dylan Thomas: Its Sources, Analogues And Its Expression In His Poetry, Margaret A. Hardesty Jan 1973

An Examination Of The Sacramental Vision Of Dylan Thomas: Its Sources, Analogues And Its Expression In His Poetry, Margaret A. Hardesty

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Amid the twentieth-century prophets of man’s total and final disintegration, against the age’s portrayers of the incurable malaise and disease gripping society, the voice of Dylan Thomas sounds as a counterpoint, evincing a note of optimism for man and society, expressing a hope that both might achieve reintegration, and, thereby, a new life. This optimistic note, this expression of hope evolved from a vision which gradually possessed Thomas and became the lodestar of all his poetic endeavors. He moved away from an uneasy, pessimistic pantheism in his youth to a firm joyousness in the conviction that all things are holy …

Extension Of Belyaev-Zelivinski Method Of Rotation As Intrinsic Nuclear Excitation, Jeffrey W. Gray Jan 1973

Extension Of Belyaev-Zelivinski Method Of Rotation As Intrinsic Nuclear Excitation, Jeffrey W. Gray

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The method of Belyaev and Zelevinski for handling the rotational collective states of deformed nuclei has been extended. It is shown how a [J(J+1)]2 term naturally occurs in the energy spectrum of a rotational band for even-even nuclei. This is accomplished by modifying the assumption that Belyaev and Zelevinski imposed on their |n> states. This leads to a definite relationship between the coefficient of the J(J+1) and [J(J+1)]2 terms in the energy spectrum. This technique is applied to a single isolated j-level and to an arbitrary level scheme.

The Imagery Of Time And Season In The German Baroque And Romantic Poetry, Jane Muenzer Mehl Jan 1973

The Imagery Of Time And Season In The German Baroque And Romantic Poetry, Jane Muenzer Mehl

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Historians of German literature generally agree that the decisive turning point in the reappraisal of German Baroque literature was largely due to Heinrich Wölfflin’s seminal study Renaissance und Barock: Eine Untersuchung über Wesen und Entstehung des Barockstils in ltalien (1888). This monograph on the development of architecture in Rome represents the first significant attempt to distinguish Renaissance and Baroque art using purely structural terms. In it Wölfflin rejects an Aristotelian view of art as the imitation of nature and redefines art history as the study of artistic styles of different epochs, nations, and individuals, expressing distinct philosophies of life, aspirations, …

The Weakly Coupled Polaron, Kou-Ying Yang Moravan Jan 1973

The Weakly Coupled Polaron, Kou-Ying Yang Moravan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The Green's Function technique has been used to investigate the properties of weakly coupled longitudinal optical polarons. By taking into consideration the contribution of the multi-phonon and the phonon-cross-exchange diagrams in the self-energy, a vertex correction has been made to the lowest order diagram. The real part and the imaginary part of the self-energy are obtained. The dispersion relationship obtained by this approximation gives the ground state energy which is lower than the upper bound obtained from the variational method. Also, the spectral weight function for several momentum values has been calculated. It shows that the quasi-particle description is good …

The Russian Judicial Reform Of 1864; Its Origins And Development, 1825-1864, Stephen Wilson Mcintire Jan 1973

The Russian Judicial Reform Of 1864; Its Origins And Development, 1825-1864, Stephen Wilson Mcintire

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The Russian Judicial Reform of 1864 has been hailed as one of Alexander II's “Great Reforms.” For it, along with the emancipation of the serfs, the creation of the zemstvos and, somewhat later, the military reforms, he inherited the appellation “Tsar-Liberator.” Most historians have regarded him as an enlightened and liberal monarch who intentionally set out to change fundamentally the constitutional foundations of the Russian Empire. In contrast, these same historians have consistently viewed his father and predecessor, Nicholas I, as a reactionary opponent of all change. Once freed from Nicholas’ tyrannical rule, the Russian people were then able to …

Dreyfus Frères, Guano And Peruvian Government Finance, 1869-1880. A Chapter In Economic Imperialism, John Peter Olinger Jan 1973

Dreyfus Frères, Guano And Peruvian Government Finance, 1869-1880. A Chapter In Economic Imperialism, John Peter Olinger

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The study of these seven years provide an illustration of economic-imperialism, and the problems faced by both sides in the relationship. Peru was dependent upon Dreyfus alone to provide it with a substantial part of its income, for the Dreyfus contract stipulated that Peru could not use its guano, its only negotiable resource at the time, as a mortgage for any further loans with anyone but Dreyfus. The French syndicate exercised no overt control over Peru, but the fact that Peru's economic well being was dependent on the Syndicate's success, restricted the freedoin of the government. Yet at the same …

Dissension Within The English Classical School: An Integration Of The Thought Of William F Lloyd,, Richard Mario Romano Jan 1973

Dissension Within The English Classical School: An Integration Of The Thought Of William F Lloyd,, Richard Mario Romano

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Probably more has been written about the English classical economists than any other group in the history of economic thought. While the bulk of this literature concentrates on the major figures of the period, i.e. Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, and J.S. Mill, there is also a considerable amount of material devoted to the works of a less influential group which includes James Mill, DeQuincy, Mcculloch, and Senior. By now the role of all these figures is fairly well understood and attention has shifted to the views of lesser known individuals within the classical period who, foreshadowing later developments in economic …

Monotone, Monotone Open, And Light Open Mappings On Manifolds, John J. Walsh Jan 1973

Monotone, Monotone Open, And Light Open Mappings On Manifolds, John J. Walsh

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Let Mm and Nn be compact connected p.1. (piecewise linear) manifolds with m ≥ 3. The first result is that a mapping f from M to N is homotopic to a monotone map of M onto N if and only if f*:π1(M) -—> π1 (N) is a surjection (mapping = map = continuous function). There are two results of a technical nature which contain sufficient conditions for the existence of monotone open and light open maps between p.1. manifolds. These provide the following two results. If f is a monotone map of Mm onto N …

The Demand For Nonfarm Housing: A Time Series Analysis, Jong Keun You Jan 1973

The Demand For Nonfarm Housing: A Time Series Analysis, Jong Keun You

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In this study, an attempt is made to identify the sources of bias in the estimates of the elasticities of housing demand and estimate the demand functions for housing with emphasis on the problem of identification. The main finding of this study is that the permanent income elasticity of housing demand is about 0.3 and the price elasticity of housing demand is about 0.35. The study is composed of static analysis and dynamic and analysis. On the contrary to relative abundance of static analyses, there have been very few dynamic studies. Furthermore, the distributed lag model which has been commonly …

The Language Of Love: The Style Of Thomas Traherne's Poetry, Carl M. Selkin Jan 1973

The Language Of Love: The Style Of Thomas Traherne's Poetry, Carl M. Selkin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

It is my hope in this work to demonstrate the ways in which the poetic language of the Dobell Folio poems incorporates these inter-related theories. The next chapter therefore explores the conceptual background of the style. First, I shall investigate the theme of communication in relation to the doctrine of circulation. Second, I shall discuss language as a specific form of communication--one which is an appropriate background for a stylistic analysis of the poetry. While such a separation between these theories of communication and language is convenient, it is necessary to point out that they are aspects of the same …

The Crucible Of Conversation: A Study Of Jamesean Dialogue, Betsy B. Aswad Jan 1973

The Crucible Of Conversation: A Study Of Jamesean Dialogue, Betsy B. Aswad

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

My own initial bemused reaction to the language of Henry James I can place in a classroom in 1960 where, with a class of fellow English majors—-old hands, all of us, at Faulkner and Joyce–I was, in the first chapters of The Wings of the Dove, as “awfully at sea” as Merton Densher was when he first met Kate Croy. A timid question drew from the professor probably the best advice that can be given to a novice at reading James: “You can't just skim James, you know; you have to read every word.” Later, teaching The Turn of the …

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Thione-Iron Carbonyl Complexes, Albert Shil-Kwan Chan Jan 1973

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Thione-Iron Carbonyl Complexes, Albert Shil-Kwan Chan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The first examples of sulfur-donor ligand ortho-metallated complexes were obtained in good to excellent yields by reaction of various thiobenzophenones and a thiobenzoate with diiron enneacarbonyl in benzene at room temperature. The known trinuclear complex S2Fe3(CO)9 was a by-product of these reactions, and complexes of the type (Ar2C)S2Fe2(CO)6 were formed in several instances. The structures of these complexes were established on the basis of microanalytical and spectral data as well as by reductive cleavage experiments. Oxidative or photolytic cleavage of the ortho-metallated complexes provides a convenient …

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of ¹⁸¹Ta, David Edward Mcloughlin Jan 1973

Nuclear Charge Distribution Of ¹⁸¹Ta, David Edward Mcloughlin

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The energies of the x rays emitted by the muonic atom of 181Ta were measured by a Ge(Li) solid state detector. From the clustering of these gamma rays it was possible to identify the transitions of the muonic atom which produced them. When a form is chosen for the nuclear charge distribution, a theoretical spectrum can be calculated…The parameters 𝛽, c, and t can then be chosen to make the calculated spectrum coincide for the 3D-2P, and 2P-1S transitions with the observed spectrum.

The first part of the calculation was performed in the following way. The monopole part of …

The Functions Of Language In The Early Tales Of Henry James: 1864-1872, Margaret Anne Yarina Jan 1973

The Functions Of Language In The Early Tales Of Henry James: 1864-1872, Margaret Anne Yarina

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In the following essays, I attempt to examine the nineteen earliest tales of Henry James as artistic experiments in the manipulation of language. Accordingly, my work represents a creative, rather than a scholarly treatment of the subject, an approach particularly warranted by the paucity of imaginative critical effort expended on these stories up to the present. A comprehensive cross section of what has been written by others, however, is summarized in an extended footnote on the initial pages of each critique, with full references to the sources documented in the bibliography. Hopefully, this concise method of annotation will serve several …
