A Critical Study Of William Nevill's The Castell Of Pleasure; The Delusions Of Amor., Thomas Hardy Miles May 1970

A Critical Study Of William Nevill's The Castell Of Pleasure; The Delusions Of Amor., Thomas Hardy Miles

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Few English poems have been neglected more than William Nevilll's The Castell of. Pleasure. Following Henry Pepwell' s reprint ( 1518) of Wynkyn de Worde' s original edition, the poem has been reprinted only twice. Scholarly criticism of the poem is even rarer than are its editions.

Dynamic Models Of Economic Development And International Capital Movements, Kiyoshi Abe Jan 1970

Dynamic Models Of Economic Development And International Capital Movements, Kiyoshi Abe

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

There has been a growing awareness that the traditional theory of international capital movements is static and must be reformulated by including dynamic elements that are common in the actual world. This awareness has long since occupied the mind of the present author whose study covers not only the so-called ‘classical’ theory of J.S. Mill, F.W. Taussig, F.G. Graham, et al, and the ‘modern’ theory of B. Ohlin, G. Harberler, R.F. Harrod, et al, in the field of international economics, but also the postwar development of the theory of economic growth initiated by R.F. Harrod and E.D. Domar. The lack …

The Diaphoric Structure And Unity Of William Faulkner's Go Down Moses, Carol C. Harter Jan 1970

The Diaphoric Structure And Unity Of William Faulkner's Go Down Moses, Carol C. Harter

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

I have always been fascinated with Faulkner. But I was forever intimidated by his complex artistry and sweeping vision, and my first reading of “The Bear” was a frustrating experience. This oddly disjunct work simply did not make sense to the young undergraduate who then preferred the lucidity of Ernest Hemingway and the grey gloom of Graham Greene. Continued exposure to Faulkner, however, began to transform frustration into cryptic delight until it finally occurred to me that his greatest works were indeed among the greatest works America has ever produced. Nothing would suffice but a major study.

But intensive studies …

Cellular Mappings On Manifolds, William Emery Haver Jan 1970

Cellular Mappings On Manifolds, William Emery Haver

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Cellular mappings of a manifold onto itself possess many properties of homeomorphisms. In particular; for n M, a continuous function defined from a manifold onto itself is cellular if and only if it can be uniformly approximated by homeomorphisms. This thesis is a study of cellular mappings, spaces of cellular mappings and a class of mappings, called UV ∞maps which are a natural generalization of cellular mappings for spaces which are not manifolds.

In Chapter one we prove that the space of cellular mappings from a manifold onto itself is a topological semi-group and that the space of all …

Petrologic Studies Of The Robles Formation, South Central Puerto Rico, Wayne Travis Jolly Jan 1970

Petrologic Studies Of The Robles Formation, South Central Puerto Rico, Wayne Travis Jolly

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The Robles Formation of south central Puerto Rico is composed primarily of andesitic lavas and pyroclastic rocks. Two important andesitic lava members are present within the formation. One, the Lapa Lava Member, is enriched in potassium. Another, the Las Tetas Lava Member, is poor in potassium. Mineralogy of the flows was strongly governed by crystal settling both in the magma chamber before eruption and within individual flows at the time of eruption. All of the igneous rocks associated with the Robles Formation belong to the calc-alkaline series.

Plagioclase and olivine phenocrysts contain a series of metamorphic alteration phases as follows: …

The Novels Of Charles Brockden Brown: Irony And Illusion, Carl W. Nelson Jan 1970

The Novels Of Charles Brockden Brown: Irony And Illusion, Carl W. Nelson

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

This study grows out of the assumption that Brown's fiction would reward examination on its merits alone; therefore, the techniques out of which Brown's complex view of man evolves receive attention over and above thematic concerns. The organization is not chronological so there is no effort at simply treating Brown's novels individually. Each chapter instead considers several of Brown's novels from the point of view of a single organizing and recurring technique of execution. Always the effort is made to remain true to the attempt at understanding what Brown is doing with the fictional art that he practiced throughout his …

Studies In Coordination Chemistry, Warren Victor Miller Jan 1970

Studies In Coordination Chemistry, Warren Victor Miller

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Coordination chemistry can be divided into two very general areas, one being the study of very reactive, labile, systems, and the other being the investigation of relatively inert species. With the hope of learning something about both of these areas, and with a desire to make a contribution to each, this thesis is comprised of two separate parts, the first dealing with the very labile complexes of the Ianthanide elements, and the second dealing with the relatively inert complexes of Co(III).

In Section A of Part I, a summary of past work in the area of lanthanide complexes with oxygen …

The Origin Of The 1810 State Council And Its Functioning During The Reign Of Alexander I, David R. Egan Jan 1970

The Origin Of The 1810 State Council And Its Functioning During The Reign Of Alexander I, David R. Egan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The need for a formal institution to assist the monarch in the governing process led to the establishment of a number of advisory bodies which can be considered predecessors of a state council in Russia. The Boyar Duma, for example, although an ill-defined body without legally determined competence, functioned for centuries as a consultative assemblage that assisted the sovereign in a wide variety of matters. It was replaced in 1708 by a Private Chancellery (Blizhniaia Kantselariia) of the tsar which, in turn, was replaced in 1711 by the Governing Senate. From 1711 to 1810 there were no less than eight …

A Study Of Compound Hapax Legomena In Old English Poetry, Arnold Victor Talentino Jan 1970

A Study Of Compound Hapax Legomena In Old English Poetry, Arnold Victor Talentino

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to see if there is an aesthetic principle governing the use of a particular type of compound word in Old English poetry, the compound which is uniquely attested. Compounds, which in Old English poetry are chiefly substantival and adjectival, are especially important in context because they consist of two words that in the normal vocabulary already had their own referents…What I wish to investigate is the question of whether many or most of these unique words are true hapax legomena, that is, words created in response to a rhetorical need. This study will assume …

The Structure And Metamorphism Of The Santa Marta Area, Colombia, South America, Barry Lee Doolan Jan 1970

The Structure And Metamorphism Of The Santa Marta Area, Colombia, South America, Barry Lee Doolan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The Santa Marta area, occupying the extreme NW corner of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is formed by rocks comprising two distinct structural and metamorphic provinces. These correspond to the Concha Pornation to the north and the Gaira Group to the south. The Concha Formation is composed of fine-grained quartzo-feldspathic schists and massive chloritic feldspathic greenschists, the former characteristically displaying a crenulation foliation in varying degrees of development. The Concha Formation has suffered retrograde metamorphism under high PCO2 conditions which account for the general absence of Ca-amphibole and the abundance of chlorite + carbonate assemblages. Local occurrences of coarse …

Optical Studies Of Chiral 1-Substituted-2-Phenylcyclohexanes, Howard Charles Price Jan 1970

Optical Studies Of Chiral 1-Substituted-2-Phenylcyclohexanes, Howard Charles Price

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The following 1-substituted-2-phenylcyclohexanes were prepared in racemic and optically-active forms: trans-2-phenylcyclohexanol (I), cis-2-phenylcyclohexanol (II), trans-2-phenylcyclohexylamine (III), cis-2-phenylcyclohexylamine (IV), trans-2-phenylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid (V), trans-2-phenylcyclohexanecarbonyl chloride (VI), and trans-1-hydroxymethyl-2-phenylcyclohexane (VII). The amides from (±)-III and (±)-VI and from (+)-III and (+)-VI were also prepared.

I and II were isolated from a commercial mixture and resolved via the 1-strychnine salts of their hydrogen phthalate esters. III, obtained via hydroboration-amination of 1-phenylcyclohexene, was resolved with d-tartaric acid. IV was prepared by rhodium-catalyzed low-pressure hydrogenation of 2-aminobiphenyl and resolved with d-tartaric acid. V, obtained from the sodium/alcohol reduction of 2-biphenylcarboxylic acid, was resolved with (-)--phenylethylamine. VI …

The Fiction Of Christopher Isherwood: Personality As Form, David Peter Thomas Jan 1970

The Fiction Of Christopher Isherwood: Personality As Form, David Peter Thomas

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Few writers illustrate more clearly than Christopher Isherwood the problem of separating an author from his work. It is true that autobiographical writers invite an interest which may not be always strictly literary: while speaking in their own persons, or employing a thinly disguised narrator, they bring the art of fiction close to the intimacy of the letter or journal and the fact/fiction transaction in such work is itself a dramatic element. But when the end of autobiographical fiction is confession, it serves as therapy, not art, and the reader's interest is essentially pathological.

Isherwood's fiction is open to this …
