Nano-Chemistry, Erwin P. Enriquez

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Nanotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary field, with contributions from all fields: physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, engineering, and others. The explosive number of publications in this field makes it nearly impossible to give an extensive review even in chemistry alone. Nonetheless, one may track its emergence and rapid advancement from the point of view of a chemist's. This paper aims to provide a conceptual overview of chemistry for nanotechnology, a brief classification of different approaches and applications, together with some sample cases.

Composition Ot Glvceride Esters Of Lauric Acid Bv Ftir Band Shape Analysis, Deniz P. Wong, Modesto Tan Chua, Erwin P. Enriquez

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Synthesis of glyceride esters of a fatty acid produces a mixture of isomers that are difficult to separate and analyze, requiring high temperature GC in most cases particularly for long-chain esters. In this paper, we present a fast estimation of the composition of the glyceride esters of lauric acid and glycerol (monolaurin, dilaurin, and trilaurin) by FTIR band shape analysis. The method uses the fact that the carbonyl stretching regions of the pure glycerides have differentband shapes, which implies any composite band of a mixture of glycerides may be resolved into the component peaks due to each glyceride. The carbonyl …

Matang Turista Sa Pelikulang Pilipino, Alvin B. Yapan Feb 2006

Matang Turista Sa Pelikulang Pilipino, Alvin B. Yapan

The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism: Prospects For Japan-Philippines Partnership, Rosalina Palanca-Tan Jan 2006

The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism: Prospects For Japan-Philippines Partnership, Rosalina Palanca-Tan

Economics Department Faculty Publications

The Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a system by which a developed country can earn carbon emission reduction (ER) credits through an emission-mitigating project undertaken in a developing country. While allowing developed countries to meet their Kyoto Protocol commitments at less cost, CDM benefits the host developing countries with new capital investments and the transfer of clean technologies. In view of the potential supply of ERs on the Philippine side and a pressing demand on Japan's side, this article explores the relatively low level of CDM cooperation between the Philippines and Japan, and suggests ways of moving forward.

Strategies In Maximizing The Use Of Existing Technology In Philippine Schools, Debbie Marie Y. Bautista, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas Jan 2006

Strategies In Maximizing The Use Of Existing Technology In Philippine Schools, Debbie Marie Y. Bautista, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas

Mathematics Faculty Publications

One of the challenges that continue to confront teachers in Philippine schools is the accessibility of technology for the study and learning of mathematics. In this paper, we will look at several situations and actual experiences happening in Philippine schools. Strategies on how existing technological tools are to be maximized will be discussed, including the creation of lesson plans and classroom activities. The use of technology-based manipulatives in mathematics learning as alternatives to unavailable technology will also be looked at.

Experiencing Transcendence: Filipino Conversion Narratives And The Localization Of Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr Jan 2006

Experiencing Transcendence: Filipino Conversion Narratives And The Localization Of Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

History Department Faculty Publications

In contrast to functionalist explanations for the spread of Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, this article discursively analyzes conversion narratives to understand the localization of a global cultural phenomenon. The narratives were drawn from interviews, conducted in 2005, with members of the El Shaddai and Jesus-is-Lord movements. Approached from the perspective of critical realism, the narratives embody a diversity of plots, creative tensions, and distinctively Filipino elements that speak of a reconstituted self and a new engagement with society. They reveal the informants' grappling with the question of God's existence, which finds resolution in individualized experiences of transcendence that generate and …

Ang Dapat Mabatid Ng Sinumang Tutula (O Magtuturo Ng Pagsulat Ng Tula), Michael M. Coroza Jan 2006

Ang Dapat Mabatid Ng Sinumang Tutula (O Magtuturo Ng Pagsulat Ng Tula), Michael M. Coroza
