C-3 Examination Of Anodized Aluminum For Surface Defects After Thermal Cycles, Boon-Chai Ng Nov 2016

C-3 Examination Of Anodized Aluminum For Surface Defects After Thermal Cycles, Boon-Chai Ng

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

A major cost in the fabrication of test sockets is the interposer, an interface layer that reroutes one connection to another. The interposer must have high resistivity with low loss, a smooth surface finish, high strength, resistance to chemicals involved in the process, and be extremely thin. Currently, the most common materials used for interposer are plastics, such as Torlon, Semitron, and PEEK. While these satisfy the requirements for test sockets, they do not perform well under higher ambient temperatures. Finding a less expensive, alternative material would be preferable.

In this study, anodized aluminum samples were subjected to repeat thermal …

B-2 Philological Problems In Isaiah 6 – An Investigation Of The Dead Sea Scroll Evidence, Rodrigo G. Barbosa Nov 2016

B-2 Philological Problems In Isaiah 6 – An Investigation Of The Dead Sea Scroll Evidence, Rodrigo G. Barbosa

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

In this paper, I use Moshe Held-Chaim Cohen’s method to try to establish a preferable reading of Isaiah chapter 6 in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS). The importance of the DSS for biblical textual criticism has not been rightly appreciated on the aspect that very few commentaries or critical study of a particular biblical text make use of it. So this work try to make the case of the relevance of the DSS textual evidence in order to establish a preferable variant of the Hebrew Bible.

P-10 Painting Horizons, Kari Friestad Nov 2016

P-10 Painting Horizons, Kari Friestad

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

My current work investigates the limitations of paint and mark-making that carries the potential to be read as various aspects in various types of oil painting, such as the particular tenants of landscape painting that evoke surface or atmosphere. These material explorations look at how the various types of marks and texture indicate recognizable forms or space that can be attributed to various qualities of the textures of nature, such as the surface of water or the fog of a hazy morning. Simplification allows stroke, texture, and value, or the inherent nature of the paint, to be isolated and thus …

P-26 Detection Of Counterfeit Antimalarial Drugs By Sers, Getahun Merga, P. Shepard, M. Trujillo, J. Camden

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Substandard antimalarial drugs are a major problem to the health of citizens in developing countries, and it is likely that the problem persists due to the lack of means to detect substandard drugs. Various colorimetric techniques have been implemented to determine if a drug contains the stated active ingredient or not, but vibrational spectroscopies such as NIR and Raman can be used to more reliably quantify the amount of active ingredient. The use of Raman, however, has been limited by the presence of significant sample fluorescence that interferes with detection of the SERS signals of the active ingredients. Thus, we …

A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer May 2016

A Tale Of Two Schools: Medical Education And California's Political Economy, Michael Weismeyer

Andrews Research Conference

This paper examines the beginnings of medical education in California and argues that the establishment of a medical school in California contributed to the growth of the state’s political economy and allowed for further development of the state. After statehood in 1850, California developed necessary infrastructure, including providing healthcare to the California populace. While there were doctors in California in the 1850s, no institution existed for educating new doctors within the state. This changed in 1859 with the founding of California’s first medical school, which was formed as the medical department of the University of the Pacific, one of California’s …

The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu May 2016

The Influence Of The Ottoman Threat On The Protestant Reformation (Reformers), Daniel Nițulescu

Andrews Research Conference

This paper will highlight the causality between the Ottoman’s menace and the Protestant Reformation in the XVI-th century, regarding the support, the consolidation and the direct determination of the Protestant movement. The question - ,,whom did the Turks support more: the Protestants or the Catholics?" was for a long time a realm of debate for theologians and even for historians.

More than that, the paper proposes to reveal the influence of Ottoman peril on reformer perceptions (visions about Turks). In this regard, one of its goal is to explain the permanent oscillation in Luther’s vision concerning Turk’s incursion and invasion. …

A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman May 2016

A Door Into Ocean’S Nonviolent Resistance As Pragmatic Social Vision, Melodie A. Roschman

Andrews Research Conference

In this essay, I examine how Joan Slonczewski’s 1986 feminist science fiction novel A Door into Ocean outlines a practical program of nonviolent resistance to oppression. Unlike many dystopian and utopian novels, which provide social commentary and offer up ideals but not practical solutions, A Door into Ocean depicts the citizens of a peaceful alien nation, Shora, using various practical tactics of resistance against invading Valan forces that can be applied to contemporary protest and political action. I begin my study by examining the threefold influences on the Shoran’s philosophy of resistance: postcolonial resistance, ecofeminism, and Quaker theology. I then …

If Somebody Knows About That Nose, It’S Not The Forgetful Maid: False Memory And The Environment Of Recall In Tristram Shandy, Kylene Cave May 2016

If Somebody Knows About That Nose, It’S Not The Forgetful Maid: False Memory And The Environment Of Recall In Tristram Shandy, Kylene Cave

Andrews Research Conference

In his seven-volume novel, In Search of Lost Time (1913-1927), Marcel Proust explores the depths and limitations of involuntary memory and argues that remembrance of the past is inherently altered and unreliable. Referred to by many scholars as Proustian Memory, this theory explicates both the revision that takes place in the act of remembering as well as the inherent fictionality of these recollections. Written, however, nearly two-hundred years earlier, Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy (1759-64) hints at some of the same claims regarding the reconstruction of the past through the act of remembering. Deeply concerned with how and to what extent …

The Road To Racial Progress In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church: A Survey Of Counsel And Policy From 1890-1920, Jon Ruhumuliza May 2016

The Road To Racial Progress In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church: A Survey Of Counsel And Policy From 1890-1920, Jon Ruhumuliza

Andrews Research Conference

The SDA church entered the South during a tumultuous period in American history. As a product of its time, the church adopted policies that limited the effectiveness of black outreach while seemingly unaware that it had accepted cultural norms towards African Americans. While the ambitions of the church expressed the inclusiveness of its Christian message, in practice it hindered itself due to prejudice by the membership along with inconsistent policies. Because of this the road to full integration of African Americans and the execution of Black Missions moved slowly. Regardless, African Americans progressed due to strong commitment to the message.

Repositioning Adventist Publishing Work In Southwest Nigerian City For Youth Appeal, Samuel Okere Ph.D, Chibuzor Onyema May 2016

Repositioning Adventist Publishing Work In Southwest Nigerian City For Youth Appeal, Samuel Okere Ph.D, Chibuzor Onyema

Andrews Research Conference

Adventist publishing ministry work presents the least appeal to the youth of the church in Ibadan city, a foremost Seventh-day Adventist mission field in Nigeria. To find out why this negative perception and the way forward, the researchers carried out a survey on 125 youths drawn from a population of 700 youths within Ibadan city. These were administered with a structured interview (questionnaire) addressing three research questions namely, 1. How do the youths perceive the potentials of Adventist publishing ministry work as a job creation organ for youth financial empowerment while doing its evangelistic work of mission advancement? 2. To …

Seek Knowledge & Affirm Faith: Conflicting World Views?, Jay Brand Mar 2016

Seek Knowledge & Affirm Faith: Conflicting World Views?, Jay Brand

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

I believe that the relationship between reason and faith necessarily involves one being subordinate to the other. However, the first two components of Andrews University's motto, "Seek Knowledge, Affirm Faith, Change the World" juxtapose these epistemologies as equals. In valuing peer-reviewed sources above others, graduate education tends to promote reason over faith as an approach to evidence, and in so-doing, undermines faith in Biblical authority. Peer-reviewed analyses of Scripture become more valuable than the Words of Scripture. Over time, this scholarly hermeneutic erodes the final authority of Scripture and compromises the foundation for faith.

P-33 Evaluation Of Anodized Aluminum For Potential Use As Interposer For Test Socket Industry, Christa Spieth, Will Allen, Boon-Chai Ng Feb 2016

P-33 Evaluation Of Anodized Aluminum For Potential Use As Interposer For Test Socket Industry, Christa Spieth, Will Allen, Boon-Chai Ng

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Anodized aluminum displays desirable qualities as an interposer in test sockets, as it is more dimensionally accurate than traditional polymers and less expensive than alternatives. However, the metal must withstand extensive heating and cooling cycles. Using a scanning electron microscope, we can compare the surface of the anodized aluminum before and after cycling to ensure that the difference in thermal expansion rates of the oxide and aluminum is not enough to cause critical defects. Initial observations suggest that the difference in expansion rates does not compromise the oxide layer, making anodized aluminum a strong candidate as a new interposer material.

Objective Research? In The Seminary?, Terry Dwain Robertson Feb 2016

Objective Research? In The Seminary?, Terry Dwain Robertson

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

Common understandings of “objective” research include values such as “factual” and “interpretive neutrality”. There is a growing consensus that the person doing the research, counts as much as if not more in the interpretive outcomes than the “facts” alone, and that “interpretive neutrality” is not possible. The poster explores an alternative framing of “objective research” as the grounded, intentional and savvy analysis of an “object” in conversation with a community of peers/experts for the purpose of creating knowledge. Following Ferraris’ ontology, three classes of “objects” exist. 1. Natural objects: exist whether or not a person notices them. Example: table, tree. …

Gutierrez And Marx: Christian Ethics From The Roots Of Marxism, Omar Montilla Feb 2016

Gutierrez And Marx: Christian Ethics From The Roots Of Marxism, Omar Montilla

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The study of theology in the last century faced constant calls for relevance and connection with human struggles. Many responses thought to make theology more significant in relation to politics and ethics. Liberation theology is one of such responses focused on the social struggle of Central and South American countries, influencing also several countries and sectors of society around the world. The writings of Carl Marx became involved in many of the social movements in the twentieth century. It was used by liberation theology in their search for

relevance and understanding of the struggles of society. Marxist ideal is that …
