Drinking Water In Egypt: The Effects Of Water On Egyptian’S Health, Aneesa Akbar-Uqdah, Sam Highsmith, Sara Tonsy
The Undergraduate Research Journal
The Nile River, often thought of as the backbone of Egypt, has been source of great sustenance and mobility throughout the years. Due to the failure of a multilayered system, however, Egypt has had difficulty providing its citizens with clean drinking water. This paper examines the perceptions regarding this matter, as well as causes and solutions as provided by experts.

Water Sanitation In Egypt: A Focus On The Sewage System In Rural Areas, Hussein Marei, Ola Kubbara, Yosra El Lozy
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Water supply and sanitation affects, among other things, people's health, life conditions, life expectancy, infant mortality and overall well-being. Hence, it influences people’s ability to attain proper education as well as their chances for good employment, productivity, income, standard of living, and overall contribution to the country's growth.
Hiv/Aids Surveillance Systems: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nesmah Elkestawi, David Johnston
Hiv/Aids Surveillance Systems: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nesmah Elkestawi, David Johnston
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Current estimates of HIV/AIDS incidences are thought to be inaccurate according to external organizations such as WHO and UNAIDS. It is important to maintain an accurate estimate of prevalence to avoid an unexpected outbreak of a high-level epidemic. Our method of analyzing Egypt’s surveillance system comes primarily from comparisons to other Eastern Mediterranean countries. Research on these regional HIV/AIDS surveillance systems was conducted by studying publications printed by organizations that deal with these issues. To gain primary perspectives on the systems in Egypt, interviews were conducted with representatives of the organizations World Health Organization (WHO) and Family Health International (FHI) …

Visual Learning Objects: Enable Faculty To Focus On Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.
Visual Learning Objects: Enable Faculty To Focus On Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.
Faculty Journal Articles
In two recent issues of New Chalk Talk (Vol.6, Issue 2 & 6) I suggested that “learning objects” enhance active learning and that “visual learning objects”, in particular, contribute significantly to the learning relationship. In this issue I wish to elaborate on how such “visual learning objects” are the key element that liberates faculty from having to design and construct their own demonstrations and illustrations (reinvent the wheel) in their respective courses and thus enable them to focus on critical and active learning instead.

Learning Objects: The Return Of The “Visual” To Active Learning?, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.
Faculty Journal Articles
In a recent issue of New Chalk Talk (Vol.6, Issue 2) I relied upon John Berger’s pioneering work Ways of Seeing, (1972) in order to suggest the primacy of “visual texts” in the learning relationship and especially with regard to our continuous concern, as educators and facilitators of the learning process, to enhance critical thinking and self-learning.

Numerical Modeling Of Concrete Masonry Walls Strengthened By Fiber Reinforced Polymers Under Lateral Loads, Mohamed Salama
Numerical Modeling Of Concrete Masonry Walls Strengthened By Fiber Reinforced Polymers Under Lateral Loads, Mohamed Salama
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The use of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for the seismic retrofit of masonry walls is on the rise. Design formulae are available to estimate the lateral load capacity of the strengthened walls. However, recent experimental data from tests conducted on full scale concrete masonry walls under cyclic lateral loads have shown that these design capacities have not been reached because of the occurrence of other failure modes not accounted for in the design formulae. The limiting failure mode in all test samples referred to in this work was due to premature compression failure of the masonry units at the wall …

Numerical Modeling Of Infill Rc Walls In Seismic Retrofit Of Rc Frames, Mohamed Mohamed Slah El-Din Darwish
Numerical Modeling Of Infill Rc Walls In Seismic Retrofit Of Rc Frames, Mohamed Mohamed Slah El-Din Darwish
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Columns designed and built according to older standards may be subject to damage due to seismic loading during earthquakes as a result of the lack of shear reinforcement and/or insufficient lap-splice length. An experimental program on the use of ifill RC walls in seismic retrofit of RC frames under cyclic loading was conducted in 2002. The output of this experimental work formed the basis for the validation of a numerical finite element model, in predicting forces and displacements. Subsequently the finite element model was used to perform a parametric analysis on the effects of the thickness, overall reinforcement and concrete …

Refugees And Asylum Seekers From Mixed EritreanEthiopian Families In Cairo, Louise Thomas
Refugees And Asylum Seekers From Mixed EritreanEthiopian Families In Cairo, Louise Thomas
Faculty Journal Articles
People from mixed EritreanEthiopian families have been caught on the ‘front line’ of hostile relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, especially since the outbreak of the 19982000 war between the two countries. This report, based on interviews conducted with refugees from mixed EritreanEthiopian families in Egypt, seeks to explain the uniquely difficult situation still faced by this group. It contends that because of their family relations with both Eritrea and Ethiopia, people from mixed families find themselves in limbo legally, socially and psychologically, and should therefore be of concern to UNHCR’s international protection regime. This report has three aims. The first …
Lock-Based Cache Coherence Protocol For Chip Multiprocessors, Ihab Ismail
Lock-Based Cache Coherence Protocol For Chip Multiprocessors, Ihab Ismail
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Chip multiprocessor (CMP) is replacing the superscalar processor due to its huge performance gains in terms of processor speed, scalability, power consumption and economical design. Since the CMP consists of multiple processor cores on a single chip usually with share cache resources, process synchronization is an important issue that needs to be dealt with. Synchronization is usually done by the operating system in case of shared memory multiprocessors (SMP). This work studies the effect of performing synchronization by the hardware through its integration with the cache coherence protocol. A novel cache coherence protocol, called Lock-based Cache Coherence Protocol (LCCP) was …

Faculty Journal Articles
On September 29, 2005, dozens of Sudanese asylum seekers and refugees initiated a sitin near the offices of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Cairo to protest UNHCR’s ongoing suspension of refugee status determination procedures as well as their conditions in Cairo, a situation they considered unbearable. Their number quickly grew to an average of 1,800 to 2,500 and remained at those levels throughout the following three months. Periodic meetings and negotiations among the sitin leadership, UNHCR, and a number of other parties failed to meet the demonstrators’ demands or to result in a satisfactory end to the …
