Defeating Sanctions: The Case Of Libya And Iraq, Daniel Zeytoonian Jun 2005

Defeating Sanctions: The Case Of Libya And Iraq, Daniel Zeytoonian

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the interaction of sender countries (SC) and target countries (TC) in an economic sanctions episode. It conceives of each sanctions event as a game between two free thinking players, out to win, which the international relations theory of Realism best explains. After examining the historical success rates of sanctions cases using large and small N studies in the literature, it seeks to identify those sender vulnerabilities that TCs exploit in order to prevail.

This work utilizes two case studies, Libya and Iraq, of sanctions episodes with the US as sanctions leader or leading sender. It breaks down …

Microeconomics Of Brand Loyalty: Learning, Switching, And Uncertainty, Ronia Ahmed Moustafa Hawash Jun 2005

Microeconomics Of Brand Loyalty: Learning, Switching, And Uncertainty, Ronia Ahmed Moustafa Hawash

Archived Theses and Dissertations

In a world of competition, loyalty to a particular brand has a significant role in the behaviour of economic agents and the outcome of markets. The objective of this thesis is to examine the microeconomics of brand loyalty from three dimensions: consumer learning by using markets with switching costs, and uncertainty in product quality. The various methodologies used are based on extensions, modeling, and integrative analysis of some works in the literature, most notably those of Klemperer, Pepall, Thisse, Gabszewicz, Schwartz and Wilde, and Tirole. Brand loyalty arising from the above mentioned perspectives is tackled via three models. The first …

The Impact Of The Turkish-Israeli Rapprochement On Turkey's Relations With Syria And Iraq From The Realist And Constructivist Perspectives, Nibal Ezz El-Din Gamil Attia

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Depending on the realist theory does not explain accurately the causes of the Turkish Israeli rapprochement. For instance, this theory neglects the nature of demographic and social formation of states in using this concept to explain alliances. The present study uses the Constructivist approach in studying these causes. Constructivists, argue that understanding how actors develop their interests is important in explaining international political phenomenon. To explain interest formation, they focus on the social identities of individuals or states. Identity, makes some countries more attractive than others. The importance of identity for determining who is considered a worthwhile strategic pa1iner is …

Parallel Versus Iterated: Comparing Population Oriented And Chained Sequential Simulated Annealing Approaches To Cost-Based Abduction, Heba Abdallah Amer

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Stochastic search techniques are used to solve NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Simulated annealing, genetic algorithms and hybridization of both, all attempt to find the best solution with minimal cost and time. Guided Evolutionary Simulated Annealing is one technique of such hybridization. It is based on evolutionary programming where a number of simulated annealing chains are working in a generation to find the optimum solution for a problem. Abduction is the problem of finding the best explanation to a given set of observations. In AI, this has been modeled by a set of hypotheses that need to be assumed to prove …

The Importance Of Information To Repatriation Decision-Making: The Sudanese Refugees In Cairo And Their Main Sources Of Information, Eline Sophie Vorland Holen

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The UNHCR Handbook on Voluntary Repatriations, as well as Executive Committee Conclusions, highlights the importance of adequate information upon evaluating repatriation. Nonetheless, few studies have concentrated on how refugees collect and evaluate available information regarding conditions in country of origin, and whether the accessible information is adequate to make an informed decision on repatriation.

This thesis analyses how southern Sudanese refugees in Cairo collect, evaluate, and use information about conditions in Sudan when they evaluate the possibilities of a return to Sudan. Five sources of information are available to the refugee community: the general Sudanese community in Cairo, including newcomers …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Participatory development is the embodiment of an approach that emphasizes a 'people centered' version of development, which ultimately aims to empower the people - so frequently portrayed as the 'objects' of development- to control their own development and the means by which it is to be achieved. This thesis examines the representation of the participation paradigm as per the discourse of that most important of development institutions- the World Bank- and provides an assessment of the latter's incorporation of participation in its activities.

This thesis essentially deals with a development paradigm that has gained significant ground in recent years, so …

Archived Theses and Dissertations

In Economic Neoliberalism Became Almost Irrelevant, G.W. Kolodko states: New development policies are emerging after 10 years of experience with the transition process. Both theoreticians and policymakers are revising earlier theories about the market-state relationship, scrutinizing privatization processes, tackling deregulation arrangements with a fresh attitude, and attempting to deal with the far-reaching consequences of globalization (Kolodko, 1999). This research examines resistance to privatization in Egypt. It researches the reasons behind such resistance and the tactics of resistance as well. It also examines the different modes of resistance that exist in Egypt. Finally, it attempts to find out the effects of …

Moreover, Egyptian cinema has been a major point of reference for Egyptian culture in this country. It has shaped and expressed the changing of scenarios of modern Egypt to an extent that no preceding art form could ever achieve. It has influenced the way in which people perceive various …

Honor And War, Amanda Frances Paulin Jun 2005

Honor And War, Amanda Frances Paulin

Archived Theses and Dissertations

International conflicts have modified into entities that would have been unrecognizable to scholars and practitioners of International Relations two decades or so ago. The global battlefield is transforming into, not objective reality, but rather a field of combined social aspects used to manipulate and twist reality in favor of the players seeking to overcome power positions and grievances. Current patterns of cooperation and conflict constitute a new paradigm of understanding for political science and international relations theorists. Traditional dynamics of power struggles between interstate conflicts have disappeared and instead have been replaced with a complex set of dynamics based on …
