Most of the research on intimate partner violence has concentrated on overt physical and verbal aggression, and less is known about relational aggression in the framework of romantic relationships. Relational aggression is more prevalent in college students’ romantic relationships compared to physical aggression and may be a risk factor for intimate partner violence. Anxiety is one of the most common disorders in children that can often lead to detrimental outcomes. Empirically-supported risk factors for child anxiety include the child’s temperament and behavioral inhibition, insecure attachment, parental over-controlling behaviors, parental anxiety, and the impact of adverse life events on the child. Targeting these risk factors early on has the ability to lead to a decrease in anxiety symptoms later in adolescence and adulthood.

The purpose of the study was to better understand the relationship between experiencing childhood sexual abuse, attachment, rejection, and risk recognition (risk appraisal and risk response). Participants consisted of 223 undergraduate women attending Illinois State University. A history of childhood abuse was reported by 37.7% of the participants. The proposed study examined the relationship between parent-adolescent attachment security, self-regulation capacity, and internalizing and externalizing problems. This study seeks to identify the impact of one’s family-of-origin experiences on future young adult romantic relationships. It is hypothesized that greater conflict within parental and parent-teen relationships will predict poorer future romantic relationship outcomes. Adverse childhood experiences have been linked to dysfunctional attachment, increased likelihood of criminal behavior, and mentalization deficits. Mentalization, also known as reflective functioning, is core aspect of social functioning that involved the capacity to “interpret both the self and others in terms of internal mental states such as feelings, wishes, goals, desires, and attitudes.” This study looked at adverse childhood experiences, attachment, and mentalization in 93 registered sex offenders attending court-ordered outpatient treatment. The aim of this study was to examine the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and borderline personality (BPD) features and examine attachment security with parents as a moderator on that among college women. A total of 453 participants completed the study, of which 29 had experienced CSA. Participants completed a self-report questionnaire measuring a history of CSA and felt stress from it, attachment security measured through attachment anxiety and avoidance and parental bonding, and BPD features. Recent substance use reports indicate a rise in use-related deaths. Emerging adults are identified as the most prevalent users of substances when compared to other age groups. Current intervention methods are not universally effective, with relapse rates varying by treatment model. The Intergenerational Transmission Of Mentalization: How Parental Reflective Function On The Parent Development Interview Relates To Child Mentalization On The Thematic Apperception Test, Kira Boesch

Mentalization is defined as the metacognitive ability to think about one’s own and other’s thoughts and feelings, with the goal of comprehending behavior (Benbassat & Priel, 2012). Mentalization is associated with secure attachment, and is both directly and indirectly linked to multiple social and emotional outcomes. This study looked at the correlation between parent and child mentalization as a means of exploring the impact of parent reflectiveness on children’s’ mentalization capacities.

Methods: This study utilized archival data collected at The Psychological Center, a community mental health clinic at the City College of New York. The sample consisted of 15 parent-child dyads. Data was collected as part of the intake process for children beginning treatment at The Psychological Center. The children in this clinical population ranged in age from 4.5 to 15.

Parent reflective function (RF) was measured using Fonagy’s RF scale (Fonagy, Target, Steele & Steele, 1998) as applied to the Parent Development Interview (Aber, Slade, Berger, Bresgi & Kaplan, 1985). Child mentalization was measured in an original way, using a composite measure of seven scales of the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale (SCORS; Westen, 2002) as applied to the Thematic Apperception Test (Morgan & Murray, 1935). Results: This study did not yield any statistically significant results. However, the effect sizes of the correlations indicated a trend by which parent and child mentalization capacities did appear to be positively associated with one another, with parent reflective function also appearing to be related to various aspects of child object relations. There is a robust evidence that childhood maltreatment contributes to the development of adult psychopathology (Brown & Anderson, 1991; Johnson, Cohen, Brown, Smailes, & Bernstein 1999; Johnson, Smailes, Cohen, Brown, & Bernstein, 2000; Ruggiero et al., 1999). However, the identification of childhood maltreatment remains a methodological problem that results in inconsistencies in the reported incidence and psychological sequelae of maltreatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parents of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals’ attachment styles and their experiences of LGB affiliate stigma associated with having an LGB child. It was hypothesized that higher levels of anxious and/or avoidant attachment, as measured by the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR; Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998), would predict higher levels of LGB affiliate stigma, as measured by the LGB Affiliate Stigma Measure (LGB-ASM; Robinson & Brewster, 2016). This study utilized Pearson correlations to assess for relationships between dispositional gratitude, attachment type, and relationship satisfaction. The survey was completed by 599 participants (77.57% female; 21.64% male; 0.63% other; 0.16% decline to state). Three separate instruments were used to assess for dispositional gratitude, attachment type (anxious/avoidant), and relationship satisfaction, respectively. In this modified single-subject design study, the researcher sought to find whether eight parents who were taught to use lullaby evidenced a change in attachment and parenting stress regarding their infant’s hospitalization and into transition to home. Adolescents benefit from relationships with meaningful adult mentors in many ways (DuBois & Silverthorn, 2005). The quality of mentoring relationships is an essential mediating factor (Pryce & Keller, 2012). Particular relationship activities may influence the relationship’s success (DuBois & Silverthorn, 2005). However, few studies have considered the role of Christian faith in the relationship and outcomes of mentoring (Lanker & Issler, 2010).

The current study sought to identify effective characteristics of naturally occurring youth relationships with Christian adult mentors. It examined differences in life adjustment between adolescents with and without Christian mentors, the role of the mentoring relationship quality in predicting those differences, and the moderating role of various relational activities.

Participants included 166 adolescents aged 13-18 in grades 9-12 attending a private Christian school and an evangelical church. The presence and importance of mentors was determined through a series of questions (Greenberger, Chen, & Beam, 1998). Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (“Screening and case finding,” 2015); life satisfaction was measured using the Life Satisfaction Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985); and religious commitment was evaluated using a single-item question (Gorsuch & McPherson, 1989). Relationship quality was appraised using the Experiences in Close Relationships - Relationship Structures Questionnaire (Fraley, Heffernan, Vicary, & Brumbaugh, 2011). Mentoring relationship activities were assessed with an 11-item self-report measure developed for this study. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests, Pearson’s r, and multiple linear regression.

Students with mentors were significantly less depressed, more satisfied, and more committed to their faith than students without mentors. Mentoring relationship quality was correlated negatively with mentee depression, and positively with life satisfaction and religious commitment. Relationships were moderated by the importance mentees placed on having fun with their mentors, jointly engaging in a meaningful, broader social context, studying the Bible or related books together, praying together, having meaningful conversations, and technologybased communication, as well as duration of the mentoring relationship. Results generally complement those of Lanker (2012; Lanker & Issler, 2010); positive adolescent adjustment is associated with Christian adults coming alongside youth to develop secure, supportive, and longterm relationships marked by certain important activities.
