The present study examines relationships among several cognitive orientations of sons and fathers as well as sons' participation in sport and perception of the influences of others in sport. The subjects, 80 boys enrolled in fifth through twelfth grades, and their fathers completed the Short Bem Sex Role Inventory (Bem, 1981), the Sport Value Orientation scale (McElroy, 1983), and the Orientation Toward Winning scale (Kidd & Woodman, 1975). The sons' perceptions of who influences them the most in sport, and the sons' participation in sport were also assessed. The results imply that fathers who have a strong Orientation Toward Winning …

The present study replicates and extends Lash and Polyson's (1986) findings that a majority of mental images of commonly projected animals are gender associated. In the present study 91 subjects created mental images of the same animals and rated them on degree of masculinity-femininity and clarity on seven point Likert scales. The two studies were very consistent for feminine animals, but many of the masculine associated animals in the original study were found to be non-gender associated. With few exceptions the gender associations generalized across sex type as measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire, visualizing ability, and sex of subject. …

The effects of sex role expectations within the context of the nuclear war issue were examined in this study. Sixty males and sixty females, ranging in age from 18 to 22 years, participated in this study. They were obtained from the introductory psychology courses at the University of Richmond. Each subject read a questionnaire, supposedly completed by another University of Richmond undergraduate, and answered two Likert-type questions measuring the degree to which the subject would like to meet and become friends with the target. The present study investigated the effects of an individual's sex-role orientation on the perception of work situations. It was hypothesized that sex-typed individuals would rate the feelings of an actor performing a sex-atypical task as experiencing more feelings of uncomfortableness than an actor performing a sex-typical task. Androgynous individuals, on the other hand, were not predicted to display any descrepancies between their ratings of sex-typical and sex-atypical behavior. Results did not yeild support for this hypothesis. Since the onset of the Women's Liberation movement in 1970, psychology literature has been flooded with studies investigating psychological sex differences, especially with regard to sex roles. This construct has been subdivided into the domains of masculine, feminine, androgynous, and undifferentiated, and persons classified under each of these categories have been examined in terms of how their "sex role'' influences their overt and covert behaviors. This ad hoc procedure for studying sex roles is useful in describing behaviors, one of psychology's professed goals. Fifteen single fathers and their children and fifteen presently married fathers and their children were Ss in this study to investigate differences in male/female conceptualizations between the children of the two different family structures as well as the influence of the fathers' self-reported sex-role on the children. The BEM Sex-Role Inventory was administered to the fathers and the Kagen Symbolic Conceptualization Test was given to the children. Analysis results indicate no sex-role differences among both groups of fathers.
