The Plant Information Network (Pin) Data Base: Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, And Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior, Fish And Wildlife Service Dec 1983

The Plant Information Network (Pin) Data Base: Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, And Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior, Fish And Wildlife Service

Plants

This publication provides introductory information on the Plant Information Network (PIN) and a print-out of PIN data. The PIN was a computerized data base containing information on native and naturalized vascular plants of five Western States. Information was included on over 5,000 species found in Colordo, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Because of funding restrictions PIN is no longer operated as a computerized data base. This publication makes the PIN data available to resource managers, planners, and others who have a continuing need for this information.

Approximately 500 descriptors were included in the data base for each species. These …

Land Resource Survey Of Rottnest Island - An Aid To Land Use Planning, P A. Hesp, M R. Wells, B H R Ward, J R H Riches

Bulletins 4000 -

This report provides a description of the landforms, soils and vegetation of Rottnest Island. In addition, it provides a discussion of the relative capability of each of the landforms of the island to sustain various forms of development. The primary objective of this work is to direct development into areas of high capability (low risk of land degradation) in preference to areas of lower capability (higher risk of land degradation).

Rottnest Island is located approximately 30 km west of Perth. The proximity of the island to the capital city of Western Australia, its warm Mediterranean climate and the subsequent likelihood …

Root System Characteristics Of Two Soybean Isolines Undergoing Water Stress Conditions, A. F. Garay, Wallace Wilhelm Nov 1983

Root System Characteristics Of Two Soybean Isolines Undergoing Water Stress Conditions, A. F. Garay, Wallace Wilhelm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Environmental stress may have a differential influence on root development of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] isolines which vary in pubescence density. Root length density and root dry matter distribution as a function of depth and distance from the row were s determined for two isolines of 'Harosoy' soybean in association with an experiment designed to evaluate the influence of epidermal pubescence on root development, water use, and photosynthetic characteristics of the two isolines. The isolines, Harosoy normal (HN) and Harosoy dense (HD), differed in the density of trichomes on the epidermal surfaces of leaves, stems, and pods. The …

Bird Distributional And Breeding Records For Southeastern Idaho, Utah, And Adjacent Regions, Clayton M. White, Herbert H. Frost, Dennis L. Shirley, G. Merrill Webb, Richard D. Porter

Great Basin Naturalist

New distributional records or the status for 33 species of birds that have occurred within Utah, adjacent southeastern portions of Idaho, or along the border of states surrounding Utah are reviewed. Four species, the Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus), and Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), represent new Utah breeding records established within the past decade, and they are commented upon. One other, the Black-tailed Gnatcatcher (Polioptila melanura), may be breeding in Utah. The Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) may likewise be breeding in southeastern …

Fertilization Practices For Double Cropping Systems, John H. Grove Oct 1983

Fertilization Practices For Double Cropping Systems, John H. Grove

Agronomy Notes

Double cropping has become an important practice in the state of Kentucky. While the wheat-soybean grain intensive production system is the most widely used on an acreage basis (approx. 3/4 million acres per year) several other systems are being adopted by Kentucky growers. Most of these involve some silage production for beef and/or dairy cattle. The fall seeded small grain (wheat, barley, triticale) is harvested at an immature stage of growth and ensiled and a subsequent crop for silage (corn, grain sorghum) or grain (soybean, grain sorghum) is planted. The use of reduced and no-tillage management will speed up planting …

Heat Tolerance Screening Of Field-Grown Cultivars Of Kentucky Bluegrass And Perennial Ryegrass, D. D. Minner, P. H. Dernoeden, David J. Wehner, M. S. Mcintosh Sep 1983

Heat Tolerance Screening Of Field-Grown Cultivars Of Kentucky Bluegrass And Perennial Ryegrass, D. D. Minner, P. H. Dernoeden, David J. Wehner, M. S. Mcintosh

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

The quality of cool-season turfgrasses frequently declines during periods of high temperature stress. Simple tests are needed to rapidly identify heat tolerant germplasm for incorporation into breeding programs. Facilitative screening tests have been devised, however, in the few studies that have been performed only immature and greenhouse or growth chamber-grown plants have been evaluated. To be of practical value, results of screening tests, employing plants grown under artificial conditions, should correlate closely with results of tests involving field grown plants. The objective of this research was to evaluate the heat tolerance of several cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis …

The Distribution And Morphology Of Fucus Distichus In An Estuarine Environment And The Effect Of Selected Ions On The Uptake Of Inorganic Carbon And Nitrate, Dale Howard Robinson Aug 1983

The Distribution And Morphology Of Fucus Distichus In An Estuarine Environment And The Effect Of Selected Ions On The Uptake Of Inorganic Carbon And Nitrate, Dale Howard Robinson

Dissertations and Theses

The morphology, distribution, and habitat of dwarf and normal forms of Fucus distichus in Nehalem Bay were examined. The dwarf form lacked the holdfast and sexual structures of the normal form and was more highly branched. Examples of the dwarf form were found growing as outgrowths of fragmented normal forms indicating that both forms are the same species. The normal form occurred attached to rocks near the mouth of the bay in waters of oceanic salinity. The dwarf form occurred as a free-living form in the salt marshes and in waters of lower salinity. These observations suggested that the occurrence …

Biosynthesis And Degradation Of Storage Protein In Spores Of The Fungus Botryodiplodia Theobromae, Gary Petersen, Kurt Dahlberg, James L. Van Etten Aug 1983

Biosynthesis And Degradation Of Storage Protein In Spores Of The Fungus Botryodiplodia Theobromae, Gary Petersen, Kurt Dahlberg, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Muiridin, a spore-specific protein of the fungus Botryodiplodia theobromae, comprises about 25% of the mature pycnidiospore protein. It has an apparent molecular weight of 16,000 to 17,000 and is rich in glutamine, asparagine, and arginink. Muiridin is synthesized in developing spores via a precursor with an apparent molecular welght of 24,000. Two other polypeptides present in young developing spores with apparent molecular weights of 18,000 and 15,000 are immunologically related to muiridin. We propose a pathway for muiridin synthesis. Muiridin is actively degraded during the germination of spores from 30-day old cultures. This degradation is independent of exogenous amino …
