Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The existence of sliding and frozen bed areas under ice sheets is significant in understanding basal thermal regimes, patterns of erosion and landform development, and in constraining boundary conditions for the reconstructions of ice sheets. Recognition of subglacial boundaries between sliding and frozen-bed areas for former ice sheets is typically based on distinct morphological contrasts between areas with glacial landform assemblages and relict areas showing little alteration of pre-existing features. Some of these boundaries, especially on continental shield areas, however, are clearly visible from air photos but have minimal topographic expression. Understanding the chronology and erosional development of such boundaries …

Detection Of Bacillus Subtilis Spores Using Peptide-Functionalized Cantilever Arrays, B. Dhayal, W. A. Henne, D. D. Doorneweerd, R. G. Reifenberger, P. S. Low Jan 2006

Detection Of Bacillus Subtilis Spores Using Peptide-Functionalized Cantilever Arrays, B. Dhayal, W. A. Henne, D. D. Doorneweerd, R. G. Reifenberger, P. S. Low

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We move beyond anti body-antigen binding systems and demonstrate that short peptide ligands can be used to efficiently capture Bacillus subtilis (a simulant of Bacillus anthracis) spores in liquids. On an eight-cantilever array chip, four cantilevers were coated with binding peptide (NHFLPKV-GGGC) and the other four were coated with control peptide (LFNKHVP-GGGC) for reagentless detection of whole B. subtilis spores in liquids. The peptide-ligand-functionalized microcantilever chip was mounted onto a fluid cell filled with a B. subtilis spore suspension for similar to 40 min; a 40 nm net differential deflection was observed. Fifth-mode resonant frequency measurements were also performed before …

The reactions gamma gamma -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) and gamma gamma -> pi(+)pi(0)pi(-)pi(0) are studied with the L3 detector at LEP in a data sample collected at centre-of-mass energies from 161 GeV to 209 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 698 pb(-1). A spin-parity-helicity analysis of the rho(0)rho(0) and p(+)p(-) systems for two-photon centre-of-mass energies between 1 and 3 GeV shows the dominance of the spin-parity state 2(+) with helicity 2. The contribution of 0(+) and 0(-) spin-parity states is also observed, whereas contributions of 2(-) states and of a state with spin-parity 2(+) and zero helicity are found to be …

Determination Of Cosmogenic Cl-36 In Rocks By Isotope Dilution: Innovations, Validation And Error Propagation, D. Desilets, M. Zreda, P. F. Almasi, D. Elmore Jan 2006

Determination Of Cosmogenic Cl-36 In Rocks By Isotope Dilution: Innovations, Validation And Error Propagation, D. Desilets, M. Zreda, P. F. Almasi, D. Elmore

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Measurements of cosmogenic Cl-36 in terrestrial rocks provide quantitative information about exposure ages of landforms and surface features. The isotope dilution method for preparing Cl-36 samples is now widely used because it allows Cl-36 and Cl to be measured simultaneously on a single accelerator mass spectrometry target, increases the accuracy and precision of Cl determinations, and reduces rock sample size and laboratory work. In this paper we describe a new implementation of isotope dilution to Cl-36 dating, report experimental data verifying the accuracy of this approach, and show how errors in the measured stable isotope ratio propagate to errors in …

Gan Nanorod Schottky And P-N Junction Diodes, P. Deb, H. Kim, Y. X. Qin, R. Lahiji, M. Oliver, R. Reifenberger, T. Sands

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Conductive atomic force microscopy has been used to characterize single GaN nanorod Schottky and p-n junction diodes. The ideality factor, reverse breakdown voltage, and the Schottky barrier height of individual nanorod diodes were compared to those from conventional thin-film diodes. Large-area contacts, enabling diodes with arrays of GaN nanorods in parallel, were also fabricated and their electrical characteristics investigated. The defect-free nature of the GaN nanorods and enhanced tunneling effects due to nanoscale contacts have been invoked to explain the electrical behavior of the nanorod diodes.

High-Speed Interferometric Detection Of Label-Free Immunoassays On The Biological Compact Disc, M. Zhao, D. Nolte, W. R. Cho, F. Regnier, M. Varma, G. Lawrence, J. Pasqua

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Background: We describe a direct-detection immunoassay that uses high-speed optical interferometry on a biological compact disc (BioCD). Methods: We fabricated phase-contrast BioCDs from 100-mm diameter 1.1-mm thick borosilicate glass disks coated with a 10-layer dielectric stack of Ta2O5/SiO2 that serves as a mirror with a center wavelength at 635 nm. The final layer is a lambda/4 layer of SiO2 onto which protein patterns are immobilized through several different chemical approaches. Protein on the disc is scanned by a focused laser spot as the disc spins. Interaction of the light with the protein provides both a phase-modulated signal and a local …

How The Cow Happened - Al Overhauser, R. Colella, A. W. Overhauser

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In the course of a casual conversation during a social gathering, in the spring of 1974, we were discussing some recent developments in the area of diffraction from perfect crystals, namely, interferometry in the Angstrom region. I (R.C.) was asked by Al Overhauser whether or not I knew anything about the subject. "Not much" was my answer, "but I can read some papers". Al then proceeded to describe a possible experiment, namely, the effect of gravity on the quantum mechanical phase of the neutron, in essence, what later was called the COW experiment (Colella, Overhauser, Werner).

Hydration-Induced Far-Infrared Absorption Increase In Myoglobin, C. F. Zhang, S. M. Durbin Jan 2006

Hydration-Induced Far-Infrared Absorption Increase In Myoglobin, C. F. Zhang, S. M. Durbin

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The interaction of proteins with an aqueous environment leads to a thin region of "biological water", the molecules of which have properties that differ from those of bulk water, in particular, reduced absorption of far-infrared radiation caused by protein-induced hindrance of the water rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom. New results at terahertz (THz) frequencies, however, show that absorption per protein molecule is increased by the presence of biological water. Absorption measurements were made of the heme protein myoglobin mixed with water from 3.6 to 98 wt % in the frequency range of 0.1-1.2 THz, using THz time-domain spectroscopy. Analysis …

The first atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) has been in operation since February 2005. We present here a technical description of the instrument and a summary of its performance. The calibration methods are described, along with the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the telescope and comparisons between real and simulated data. The analysis of TeV gamma-ray observations of the Crab Nebula, including the reconstructed energy spectrum, is shown to give results consistent with earlier measurements. The telescope is operating as expected and has met or exceeded all design specifications. (c) 2006 …

Cosmogenic surface-exposure Be-10 dating of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) moraines indicates that glaciers in the southwestern Uinta Mountains remained at their maximum positions until ca. 16.8 +/- 0.7 ka, similar to 2 k.y. after glaciers in the neighboring Wind River Range and Colorado Rockies began to retreat. The timing of the local LGM in the southwestern Uintas overlaps with both the hydrologic maximum of Lake Bonneville and preliminary estimates of the local LGM in the western Wasatch Mountains. This broad synchroneity indicates that Lake Bonneville and glaciers in northern Utah were responding to similar climate forcing. Furthermore, equilibrium line altitudes …

Measuring The Interaction Force Between A Tip And A Substrate Using A Quartz Tuning Fork Under Ambient Conditions, Y. Qin, R. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Tuning forks mounted with sharp tips provide an alternate method to silicon microcantilevers for probing the tip-substrate interaction in scanning probe microscopy. The high quality factor and stable resonant frequency of the tuning fork allow accurate measurements of small shifts in the resonant frequency as the tip approaches the substrate. To permit an accurate measure of surface interaction forces, the electrical and piezomechanical properties of a tuning fork has been characterized using techniques derived from scanning probe microscopy. After proper calibration, representative interaction force data for a conventional Si tip and an HOPG substrate are obtained under ambient conditions.

Miller Butte 03002: A New Rare Iron Meteorite (Iid) From Antarctica, D'Orazio, L. Folco, K. C. Welten, M. W. Caffee, N. Perchiazzi, P. Rochette

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The Miller Butte (MIB) 03002 iron meteorite was found during the XIX (2003-2004) Antarctic campaign of the Italian Programma Nazionale delle Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA) in northern Victoria Land (Antarctica). MIB 03002 is classified as a medium octahedrite belonging to the rare IID chemical group, and it is the first IID iron among the 30,000 specimens so far returned from Antarctica. The bulk chemistry of this meteorite indicates that it represents an intermediate member of the differentiation series of IID irons. Polygonal kamacite, shear planes in the Widmanst5tten structure and relies of cross-hatched E-structure indicate that MIB 03002 experienced important …

Hadron production and lepton-pair production in e(+)e(-) collisions are studied with data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies root s = 192-208 GeV. Using a total integrated luminosity of 453 pb(-1), 36057 hadronic events and 12863 lepton-pair events are selected. The cross sections for hadron production and lepton-pair production are measured for the full sample and for events where no high-energy initial-state-radiation photon is emitted prior to the collisions. Lepton-pair events are further investigated and forward-backward asymmetries are measured. Finally, the differential cross sections for electron-positron pair-production is determined as a function of the scattering angle. …

Rice blast fungus ( Magnaporthe grisea) forms a highly specialized infection structure for plant penetration, the appressorium, the formation and growth of which are regulated by the Mst11- Mst7- Pmk1 mitogen- activated protein kinase cascade. We characterized the MST50 gene that directly interacts with both MST11 and MST7. Similar to the mst11 mutant, the mst50 mutant was defective in appressorium formation, sensitive to osmotic stresses, and nonpathogenic. Expressing a dominant active MST7 allele in mst50 complemented its defects in appressorium but not lesion formation. The sterile alpha-motif ( SAM) domain of Mst50 was essential for its interaction with Mst11 and …

The mass and the total decay width of the W boson are measured with the L3 detector at the LEP e(+)e(-) collider using W-boson pairs produced in 0.7 fb(-1) of data collected at centre-of-mass energies between 161 and 209 GeV. Combining semi-leptonic and fully-hadronic final states, the mass and the width of the W boson are determined to be m(W) = 80.270 +/- 0.046 +/- 0.031 GeV and Gamma(W) = 2.18 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.09 GeV , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

With the growing number of fatalities resulting from the 100 or so cancer-related diseases, new enabling tools are required to provide extensive molecular profiles of patients to guide the clinician in making viable diagnosis and prognosis. Unfortunately with cancer-related diseases, there is not one molecular marker that can provide sufficient information to assist the clinician in making effective prognoses or even diagnoses. Indeed, large panels of markers must typically be evaluated that cut across several different classes (mutations in certain gene fragments-DNA; over/underexpression of gene activity as monitored by messenger RNAs; the amount of proteins present in serum or circulating …

The mechanism for resonant scattering in LaMnO3 has been the subject of some controversy between two models. Model (A) is based on orbital ordering, whereas model (B) invokes the Jahn-Teller distortion. From the structural point of view, the two models lead to different d-electron densities. The forbidden reflection 300 is turned on by resonance, leading to a well defined scheme for the lobes of the Mn d electrons [ model (A)]. It turns out that the same experimental results could have been interpreted according to model (B). The only difference is that this alternative interpretation would have required a structure …

Status Of Charm Flavor Physics, I. Shipsey Jan 2006

Status Of Charm Flavor Physics, I. Shipsey

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The role of charm in testing the Standard Model description of quark mixing and CP violation through measurements of lifetimes, decay constants and semileptonic form factors is reviewed. Together with Lattice QCD, charm has the potential this decade to maximize the sensitivity of the entire flavor physics program to new physics. and pave the way for understanding physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC in the coming decade. The status of indirect searches for physics beyond the Standard Model through charm mixing, CP-violation and rare decays is also reported.
