Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected athletes exist at the collegiate level and are engaging in competitive sports, as was revealed by a 1993 NCAA survey. Unfortunately, there is a void when the issue of policy for the HIVpositive athlete and his or her participation rights at the collegiate level is addressed. Given the controversial nature of opinion on HIV and the resultant acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), it is recommended that a policy be in place for an HIV-infected athlete before it is needed. Ithaca College has recently developed such a policy, and it is offered here to other educational institutions as …

Multifragment decays of central collisions in 84Kr+197Au at E/A=70MeV are studied. By utilizing a technique sensitive to the emission order of fragments, it is deduced that carbon fragments are emitted prior to beryllium fragments when these fragments have the same velocity. This observation is consistent with the cooling of a thermally decaying source.

Within the framework of classical molecular dynamics, we study the collision Au+Au at an incident energy of 35 MeV/nucleon. It is found that the system shows a critical behavior at peripheral impact parameters, revealed through the analysis of conditional moments of charge distributions, Campi scatter plot, and the occurrence of large fluctuations in the region of the Campi plot where this critical behavior is expected. When applying the experimental filters of the MULTICS-MINIBALL apparatus, it is found that criticality signals can be hidden due to the inefficiency of the experimental apparatus. Sidewards directed fragment flow has been extracted for 84Kr+197Au collisions at E/A=200MeV, using techniques that are free of reaction plane dispersion. The fragment flow per nucleon increases with mass, following a thermal or coalescencelike behavior, and attains roughly constant limiting values at 4≤A≤12. Comparisons of the impact parameter dependences of the measured coalescence-invariant proton flow to Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck calculations clearly favor a momentum dependent nuclear mean field.

A new, sensitive method allows one to search for the enhancement of events with nearly equal-sized fragments as predicted by theoretical calculations based on volume or surface instabilities. Simulations have been performed to investigate the sensitivity of the procedure. Experimentally, charge correlations of intermediate mass fragments emitted from heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies have been studied. No evidence for a preferred breakup into equal-sized fragments has been found.

Recombinant human protein C (rhPC) secreted in the milk of transgenic pigs was studied. 'Ikansgenes having different regulatory elements of the murine milk protein, whey acidic protein, were used with cDNA and genomic human protein C (hPC) DNA sequences to obtain lower and higher expressing animals. The cDNA pigs had a range of expression of about 0.1-0.5 g/l milk. Two different genomic hPC pig lines have expressed 0.3 and 1-2 g/l, respectively. The rhPC was first purified at yields greater than 60 per cent using a monoclonal antibody (mAb) to the activation site on the heavy chain of hPC. Subsequent …

The azimuthal angular correlations of light charged particles and light intermediate mass fragments emitted from the reaction 36Ar+197Au at E/A=50MeV are found to be reducible to the angular distributions of individual fragments. Thermal scaling is also observed in the coefficients of the angular correlations. Furthermore, the observed scaling with fragment mass seems to imply secondary emission from relatively small ( A≈15–30) primary fragments.

The spatial-temporal extent of the emitting system for central collisions in Kr84 + Au197 at E/A = 35, 55, and 70 MeV is probed using fragment-fragment velocity correlation functions. Selection on fragment pairs of high velocity yields a stronger fragment-fragment Coulomb interaction than for inclusive fragment pairs. This result is consistent with fragment emission from a source of decreased spatial-temporal extent. The universality of this association and the effect of different selection criteria are explored. The sensitivity of the spatial-temporal extent deduced by the correlation function technique to measurement uncertainties, assumed source characteristics, and rotational effects is assessed.

The fragmentation resulting from peripheral Au+Au collisions at an incident energy of E=35MeV/nucleon is investigated. A power-law charge distribution, A−τ with τ≈2.2, and an intermittency signal are observed for events selected in the region of the Campi scatter plot where “critical” behavior is expected.

Emission of charged particles from a compressed reaction zone is studied for Au197+197Au collisions at E/A=100, 250, and 400 MeV. Using a modified coalescence invariant weighting, squeeze-out ratios are determined and compared to predictions of cascade and BUU transport-model calculations.

Free-product record system designs for light-hydrocarbon-contaminated sites were investigated to evaluate the effects of subsurface heterogeneity using a vertically integrated three-phase flow model. The input stochastic variable of the areal flow analysis was the log-intrinsic permeability and it was generated using the Turning Band method. The results of a series of hypothetical field-scale simulations showed that subsurface heterogeneity has a substantial effect on free-product recovery predictions. As the heterogeneity increased, the recoverable oil volume decreased and the residual trapped oil volume increased. As the subsurface anisotropy increased, these effects together with free- and total-oil contaminated areas were further enhanced. The …

Between 1989-1991, I studied the effects of livestock grazing on vegetation and small mammals in semiarid shrub-grassland habitats of south-central Utah. Responses were measured at 2 spatial habitat scales; patches and macrohabitats. Patch-scale data were obtained from 4 small (<1 ha) livestock exclosures and nearby grazed areas. Macrohabitat-scale data were collected at 4 actively grazed sites and 4 comparable, excellent condition sites, ungrazed for 30+ years. Ungrazed patch and macrohabitat sites had more surface litter, greater perennial grass cover, and taller perennial grass plants, but treatment response varied among sites. Small mammal responses were apparent only at the macrohabitat scale, where ungrazed sites had 50% greater species richness and 80% higher abundance. Small mammal reproductive activity and biomass were not affected by rest from grazing at either scale. Small mammal community composition varied greatly among sites and within treatments. This variability has important implications for ecological monitoring efforts involving these species.

The charge distributions and their dependence on fragment multiplicity have been studied for the multifragmentation of 30 MeV/nucleon Xe+Au, Cu. For both targets, the charge distributions are approximately independent of the fragment multiplicity n. However, a residual systematic dependence on n is detectable at the largest values of the total charge multiplicity Nc. Such n dependence obeys a simple scaling law and suggests the presence of an entropic term possibly related to the mechanism of multifragmentation. Differential cross sections for evaporation residues and fission fragments for 35A, 100A, 130A and 155A MeV N14 on targets ranging from Sm154 to Au197 have been measured. The angle-integrated cross sections are larger than what might be expected. The fission fragment-fission fragment folding angle correlations for 35A, 100A MeV N14 and 25AMeV O16 on similar targets were also measured. The average linear momentum transfer has been deduced from both the fission angle correlation and from the fore-aft asymmetry of the fission angular distributions in the laboratory system. Irrigation Timing Of Tree Landscape Shrub Species Based On Foliage Temperature, Roger Kjelgren

Changes in foliage temperature with vapour pressure deficit and water stress for three shrub species were investigated for use in irrigation scheduling in landscapes. Midday leaf-minus-air temperature (T1-Ta) and vapour pressure deficit were monitored seasonally for prostrate juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’), upright juniper (J. chinensis ‘Hetzi’, and dwarf red-stem dogwood (Cornus sericea ‘Kelseyii’), positioned as isolated plants or in a massed setting. There was an inverse baseline relationship between T1-Taand vapour pressure deficit for all species and both spacings under well-watered conditions.
