Astronomy Matters For Chemistry Teachers, Terry Smith, Jay Huebner, Robert Vergenz Jul 2014

Astronomy Matters For Chemistry Teachers, Terry Smith, Jay Huebner, Robert Vergenz

Jay S Huebner

The purpose of this paper is to encourage more chemistry teachers to become familiar with some of the basic ideas described in typical introductory astronomy courses (1 - 9), including those about the origin of elements and forms of matter. These ideas would enrich chemistry courses and help resolve some basic misconceptions that are expressed in many introductory texts (10 - 16) and journal articles for chemistry teachers (17, 18). These misconceptions are typified by statements such as "we can classify all substances as either elements or compounds," and "nature has provided 92 elements out of which all matter is …

Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan Dec 1996

Aviation English: An Introduction, Peter H. Ragan

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Aviation is a specialized, technology-based area that covers a broad range of activities, from esoteric analyses of compressible fluids, to selling tickets, to getting a clearance for takeoff. Accordingly, the language behavior inherent to such activities is diverse, often requiring specialized uses of English that are collectively labeled here as Aviation English. Aviation English figures prominently in most fields of aviation/aerospace education and practice, in regulatory and administrative agencies concerned with national and international commerce, norms and standards, and in academic, industrial, and government research and development. A greater awareness of the nature of Aviation English and of relevant resources …

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

This paper will look at some of the interpretations of Walther's influence and also the strength of confessional Lutheranism among Norwegian-Americans during four periods: the time until 1860, the period during the slavery issue, the period during the election controversy and the period after Walther's death.1

Jerome On Virginity: An Analysis Of St. Jerome's Position On Consecrated Virginity And Celibacy And Their Relation To Marriage, Daniel Kempin Dec 1996

Jerome On Virginity: An Analysis Of St. Jerome's Position On Consecrated Virginity And Celibacy And Their Relation To Marriage, Daniel Kempin

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

How and why Jerome came to be a champion of this cause is a story in itself, and his own accounts of his personal experience are often emotional and dramatic. Of greater significance, however, is the theological legacy to which Jerome contributed by his strong emphasis on Christian celibacy, particularly consecrated virginity. In this paper I will investigate Jerome's position on Christian celibacy and virginity, including the influences that contributed to his position, in order to identify the theological implications that were a part of his position, and to discuss briefly the exegesis with which he supported his position.

A Social Exchange Explanation Of Participation In The U.S. Farm Program, John K. Thomas, Jack Thigpen Dec 1996

A Social Exchange Explanation Of Participation In The U.S. Farm Program, John K. Thomas, Jack Thigpen

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Passage of the 1990 Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act resulted from the political influence of many environmental interest groups and, consequently, included many conservation provisions. As agricultural policy has increasingly reflected the environmental concerns of the public, farmers who participate in the Farm Program have adjusted their production practices to conserve land and water resources, minimize use of agrichemicals, and control animal wastes. Social exchange theory was used to examine personal and farm characteristics that could affect agroenvironmental attitudes, Farm Program participation, and conservation practices of Texas farmers (n = 1,063 farmers) in 199 1. One in four farmers …

Conflict In The Community: A Challenge For Land Grant Universities, Thomas W. Ilvento Dec 1996

Conflict In The Community: A Challenge For Land Grant Universities, Thomas W. Ilvento

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper revisits the notion of conflict in the community and then discusses a relatively new strategy for dealing with community conflict that is gaining popularity: alternative dispute resolution (ADR), particularly mediation. While ADRs are not entirely new, there has been a renewed interest in them as viable strategies for community development and public policy education. Conflict in communities is ubiquitous and should demand greater attention by rural sociologists, particularly those involved in community development. Environmental mediation is a strategy through which rural sociologists can effectively assist a community in resolving conflict Furthermore, as rural sociologists study and practice environmental …

Changing Employment Patterns In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Family Structure, Don E. Albrecht, Stan L. Albrecht Dec 1996

Changing Employment Patterns In Nonmetropolitan America: Implications For Family Structure, Don E. Albrecht, Stan L. Albrecht

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

During the past few decades, the industria/employment structure of rural America has changed dramatically. The major causes of these changes have been technological developments which have reduced the human labor needs in the natural resources industries of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and mining. While employment in the natural resources industries has declined, the loss of these jobs has been offset by increased employment in the manufacturing and service industries. This paper explores the relationship between variations in the industrial structure of nonmetropolitan counties in the United States and several family structure variables. It was found that counties with larger proportions of …

Prediction Of Stress Appraisals From Mastery, Extraversion, Neuroticism, And General Appraisal Tendencies, S. H. Hemenover, Richard A. Dienstbier Dec 1996

Prediction Of Stress Appraisals From Mastery, Extraversion, Neuroticism, And General Appraisal Tendencies, S. H. Hemenover, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Several personality dimensions (mastery, extraversion, and neuroticism) and a new General Appraisal Measure were used to predict stress appraisals made by college students in specific situations. Using multiple-regression techniques, mastery and general appraisal tendencies predicted appraisals for an intellectual task. Path analysis supported a structural model with general appraisal tendencies as a mediator between mastery and specific appraisal. In the second study mastery, extraversion, neuroticism, and general appraisal tendencies predicted appraisals for an academic stressor. Path analysis again supported the mediational nature of general appraisal tendencies from personality variables to specific appraisal. We discuss a potential causal mechanism between personality …

The Transport Properties Of Nanocrystalline Srce0.95yb0.05o3 Thin Films, Igor Kosacki, Harlan U. Anderson Dec 1996

The Transport Properties Of Nanocrystalline Srce0.95yb0.05o3 Thin Films, Igor Kosacki, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of electrical transport measurements on nanocrystalline SrCe0.95Yb0.05O3 thin films are presented. Dense SrCe0.95Yb0.05O3 thin films with 30-70 nm grain size have been obtained using a spin-coating technique. These films exhibit about 103 higher electrical conductivity when compared with the bulk polycrystalline material. The grain size of thin films is stable to temperatures as high as 1000 °C since no grain-coarsening was observed. These unique electrical properties of nanocrystalline SrCe0.09Yb0.05O3 thin films are attributed to a dominant role of grain boundaries and/or interfaces. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Prior Analytics And Aristotle's Commitment To Logos, George Boger Dec 1996

Prior Analytics And Aristotle's Commitment To Logos, George Boger

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Prior Analytics describes a natural deduction system as part of an underlying logic. It is a proof-theoretic treatise concerned principally to establish and to perfect a deduction system for science. Aristotle knew that deductions about matters pertaining to a given subject matter are content specific and that they employ a topic neutral deduction system; such a system makes evident that given sentences logically follow from other given sentences. One process of deduction is accomplished through taking pairs of given categorical sentences to generate immediate inferences according to prescribed rules, which categorical inferences are then added to the given sentences and …

Aristotle's Account Of The Virtue Of Courage In Nicomachean Ethics Iii.6-9, Howard J. Curzer Dec 1996

Aristotle's Account Of The Virtue Of Courage In Nicomachean Ethics Iii.6-9, Howard J. Curzer

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Aristotle's account of courage exhibits several general principles of his architectonic. First, Aristotle applies to courage what I have called the doctrine of disjoint spheres. (1) Each virtue has its own sphere completely separate from the spheres of all other virtues. Aristotle then goes on to narrow the sphere of courage by insisting correctly that courage governs only situations involving both fear and confidence. Aristotle does not make the mistake of further restricting courage to life-threatening situations. Like his accounts of other virtues, Aristotle's account of courage involves several different parameters. (2) Each virtue is a disposition for getting all …

External Morphology Of The Chorion Of The Annual Fishes Cynolebias (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), Marcelo Loureiro, Rafael O. De Sá Dec 1996

External Morphology Of The Chorion Of The Annual Fishes Cynolebias (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), Marcelo Loureiro, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

Members of the family Rivulidae (killifishes) inhabit temporary bodies of freshwater in South and Central America (one species is also found in North America). The most remarkable characteristic of the family Rivulidae is that species have an annual life cycle with a drought-resistant egg during the dry season. Parenti's (1981) analysis of the order Cyprinodontiformes considered a single genus, Cynolebias, whereas Cos- ta's (1990) phylogenetic analysis of the family Rivulidae separates Cynolebias from Cynopoecilus. One of Costa's synapomorphies to separate Cynopoecilus is the unique structure of their egg's chorion, which is shared with Leptolebias and Campellolebias.

Eumops Perotis, Troy L. Best, W. Mark Kiser, Patricia W. Freeman Dec 1996

Eumops Perotis, Troy L. Best, W. Mark Kiser, Patricia W. Freeman

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Eumops perotis is the largest bat in the United States. The greater mastiff bat resembles other North American free-tailed bats, but is distinguished from other molossids by its large size and lack of long guard hairs on the rump (Barbour and Davis, 1969). E. perotis has the thinnest dentary of any Eumops (Freeman, 1981a).In the United States, E. perotis can be separated from E. underwoodi by its larger size (forearm is 73-83 mm in E. perotis and 65-77 mm in E. underwoodi), darker color, and lack of long guard hairs on the rump. The ears are longer (36-47 mm …

State Regulation Of Managed Care And The Employee Retirement Income Security Act, Wendy K. Mariner Dec 1996

State Regulation Of Managed Care And The Employee Retirement Income Security Act, Wendy K. Mariner

Faculty Scholarship

The federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA)1 is the federal law that governs employee-benefit plans offered by private employers and unions. ERISA has long hindered state efforts to expand access to health care, because it prohibits states from requiring all employers to offer benefits to their employees.2 States have shifted their attention from seeking universal insurance coverage for health care to regulating the benefits of people who already have health insurance. Reports describing how some managed-care organizations limit the care provided to their enrollees have prompted a rash of legislative efforts intended to protect patients from receiving …

This commentary documents serious pitfalls in the statistical analyses and the interpretation of empirical evidence presented in The Bell Curve. Most importantly, the role of education is re-evaluated and it is shown how, by neglecting it, The Bell Curve grossly overstates the case for IQ as a dominant determinant of social success. ...
