Feature Preserving Continuous Level-Of-Detail For Terrain Rendering, Lucas Jay Shinkovich Dec 2008

Feature Preserving Continuous Level-Of-Detail For Terrain Rendering, Lucas Jay Shinkovich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Despite the vast processing power of modern GPUs, rendering terrain geometry at sufficient frame rates is still a very difficult task. This is mainly due to the large terrain data that must be managed, displayed and modified at high frame rates. While traditional level-of-detail algorithms for terrain utilize most of the CPU and a fraction of the GPU, our algorithm exploits the parallel processing capabilities of the GPU. We represent the terrain geometry as a set of geometry images which allows us to apply image processing techniques to preserve terrain features during level-of-detail transitions and to render terrain that has …

A Parametric Study Of Microcellular Abs Foam Production In The Injection Molding Process, Adam Finniss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Polymer foaming is an emerging technology with many possible benefits. In this work, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymer was studied, due to its excellent structural properties, such as impact and flexural/tensile properties. Much research has been undertaken in the field of foaming; however, little information is available with a system as complex as ABS polymer, due to its multi-phase nature. By injection molding ABS polymer along with chemical foaming agents (CFA), information about the effect of process and material variables on the resultant physical properties of the foams could be gained.;This research focused on the effect of parameters such as the mold …

Tree Preservation And Its Impact On Residential Development And Real Estate Value, Melissa Gerstle Sep 2008

Tree Preservation And Its Impact On Residential Development And Real Estate Value, Melissa Gerstle

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Mature trees create more attractive residential neighborhoods and contribute a significant amount to the resale value of a home (Benotto, 2002). According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, one mature tree can amount to at least $10,000 of a home's resale value and will typically account for 15 percent of the property's value (Benotto 2002). In addition, the combined economic value of a street lined with mature trees is greater than the net sum of the value of the individual trees (Benotto 2002). While large, mature trees add substantial economic value to a residential development, tree growth is a slow …

The Search For Appropriate Form: The Relationship Between Landscape Architecture And Art In Three Time Periods, Elizabeth Matlock Sep 2008

The Search For Appropriate Form: The Relationship Between Landscape Architecture And Art In Three Time Periods, Elizabeth Matlock

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Art and landscape architecture are both a means through which man can explore the natural world around him; they provide an opportunity for self expression and reflection. This thesis is based on the hypothesis that several times throughout history landscape architects and designers have looked to art for inspiration in times of change within the profession and that as that relationship evolved the roles have reversed. In the past landscape architects and designers have looked to art for inspiration, now artists are looking to landscape architects for inspiration and form determination. Three periods of history exemplify this changing relationship: the …

The Relationship Between Designed Urban Environments And Skateboarding In Downtown Fort Worth, Nicholas Glade Nelson Sep 2008

The Relationship Between Designed Urban Environments And Skateboarding In Downtown Fort Worth, Nicholas Glade Nelson

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Cities are a collection of designed environments. In turn, these environments consist of parts that vary in scale from districts to light fixtures. The design of outdoor urban environments is a dynamic and collaborative process of arranging these parts to create places with purpose. Evidence of this can be found in the numerous professions that participate in the design of urban environments (Eckbo, 1964). Such is the case in the city of Fort Worth, Texas. With many participants, often unilaterally, contributing to the design of built urban environments, not all of the ensuing results are intentional. The objective of this …

Why Do People Engage In Social Computing? A Need Fulfillment Perspective, Vishal Sachdev Aug 2008

Why Do People Engage In Social Computing? A Need Fulfillment Perspective, Vishal Sachdev

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations

With the trend towards social interaction over the Internet and the popularity of websites such as Myspace, Facebook and Youtube among others, practitioners and researchers are motivated to explain the sudden surge in user interest, in a phenomenon that we term, Social Computing. We seek to research the question: "Why do people engage in Social Computing?" The motivation is to determine some of the underlying human psychological factors that are driving this phenomenon. Towards this end, we propose a reformulation of the interactivity construct by suggesting new dimensions of interactivity that are unique to social computing. With this reformulated interactivity …

Working Librarians' Perceptions Of The Role Of The Public Library In The 21st Century, Susan Smith Jul 2008

Working Librarians' Perceptions Of The Role Of The Public Library In The 21st Century, Susan Smith

Public Affairs Dissertations

Tax-supported public institutions with often-insufficient resources, public libraries in America can only provide a limited array of programs, services and materials. Recent surveys of the public show libraries are important, but there is a lack of understanding and awareness about what the library does and the source of library funding. Librarians have long known that they do a bad job of telling others about the library. An unclear mission would make communicating difficult, as it is hard to communicate what the library does if there is no clear role or purpose for the library. Examining current professional literatures shows little …

A Study Of Foreign Earnings Management Using An Empirical Distribution Approach, Nancy Manzhen Fan Jun 2008

A Study Of Foreign Earnings Management Using An Empirical Distribution Approach, Nancy Manzhen Fan

Accounting Dissertations

Effective January 1, 1998, SFAS 131 changed the way managers voluntarily disclose business, geographic and operating segments of their companies. Reporting geographic segments is specifically related to the reporting of overseas operations of multinational companies. This study analyzes the possibility of earnings management in foreign earnings and how SFAS 131 might have changed the patterns of foreign earnings distribution. I use an empirical distribution approach outlined by Burgstahler and Dichev (1997) in examining whether foreign earnings are managed to avoid earnings decreases and losses. Results show that foreign earnings are managed to avoid losses but not earnings decreases. In addition, …

Data Recovery From Magnetic Media Using Magnetic Force Microscopy, Terry R. Ferrett May 2008

Data Recovery From Magnetic Media Using Magnetic Force Microscopy, Terry R. Ferrett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Magnetic tapes are widely used to store voice and other data. Due to the effect of hysteresis, modification of the magnetization pattern written to a tape by overwriting, erasing, or physical damage leaves remanent information about the previous magnetization state that can not be discerned by standard audio playback devices. Recently, a high resolution microscopy technique known as magnetoresistive microscopy was used by Pappas et al. in an attempt to recover data from audio tapes which were physically damaged. However, the device, while having a higher resolution than tape playback heads, still averages over entire audio track widths when collecting …

The Irony Of Proving Discrimination, Rosalyn Wilson-Green

Public Affairs Dissertations

Currently America courts require plaintiffs alleging discrimination to not only prove the existence of present day discrimination but to also prove the "discriminatory intent." This dissertation contains two applications of the theory of unconscious discrimination as it reveals the difficulty of prevailing in discrimination cases. The assumption applied is that policy-makers use theories that dismiss or render invisible the presence of subtle discrimination. This perpetuates the problem and hinders its adequate address. Since so many people suffer because of discrimination's invisible-yet present existence, measures must be taken to unveil the remedy this subtler form of discrimination. In this dissertation, I …
