Pathologists diagnose biopsy samples with a stained specimen on the glass slide through a microscope. The entire specimen can be stored as a Whole Slide Image (WSI) for further analysis. However, managing and manually diagnosing hundreds of images is time-consuming and requires specific expertise. As a result, there is extensive ongoing research for computer-aided diagnosis of these digitally acquired pathology images. Deep learning has gained significant attention for its effectiveness with disease classification and segmentation of cancer cells from pathology images. For deep learning, a large number of annotated images are needed to build a robust and accurate model. However, …

Sentimental Empiricism: Politics, Philosophy, And Criticism In Postwar France, Davide Panagia Jul 2024

Sentimental Empiricism: Politics, Philosophy, And Criticism In Postwar France, Davide Panagia

Politics

Sentimental Empiricism reconsiders the legacy of eighteenth and nineteenth century empiricism and moral sentimentalism for the intellectual formation of the generation of postwar French thinkers whose work came to dominate Anglophone conversations across the humanities under the guise of “French theory.” Panagia’s book first shows what was missed in the reception of this literature in the Anglophone academy by attending to how France’s pedagogical milieu plays out church and state relations in the form of educational debates around reading practices, the aesthetics of mimesis, French imperialism, and republican universalism. Panagia then shows how such thinkers as Jean Wahl, Simone de …

Primary Versus Secondary Psychosis In A Patient With Congenital Liver Disease, Sormeh Nourbakhsh, Stephen J. Ferrando Jul 2024

Primary Versus Secondary Psychosis In A Patient With Congenital Liver Disease, Sormeh Nourbakhsh, Stephen J. Ferrando

NYMC Faculty Publications

In this article we report the case of a man with congenital liver disease who later developed psychotic illness and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. We illustrate how decompensation in liver function was associated with the exacerbation of psychotic symptoms. We discuss differential diagnostic challenges, and the possible overlapping neuropathology in these two conditions that may converge on glutamate/N-methyl-D-aspartate dysfunction. This patient's case underscores the need for further research to elucidate the possible underlying mechanisms linking congenital liver disease and psychosis.

Obesity is a major risk factor for liver and cardiovascular diseases. However, obesity-driven mechanisms that contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple organ diseases are still obscure and treatment is inadequate. We hypothesized that increased , glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the key rate-limiting enzyme in the pentose shunt, is critical in evoking metabolic reprogramming in multiple organs and is a significant contributor to the pathogenesis of liver and cardiovascular diseases. G6PD is induced by a carbohydrate-rich diet and insulin. Long-term (8 months) high-fat diet (HFD) feeding increased body weight and elicited metabolic reprogramming in visceral fat, liver, and aorta, of the wild-type …

NYMC Faculty Publications

The endothelial glycocalyx (EG) undergoes early degradation in sepsis. Our recent work introduced a novel therapeutic approach involving liposomal nanocarriers of preassembled glycocalyx (LNPG) to restore EG in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis model of mice. While short-term effects were promising, this study focuses on the long-term impact of LNPG on mouse cerebral microcirculation. Utilizing cranial window, we assessed the stability of vascular density (VD) and perfused boundary region (PBR), an index of EG thickness, over a five-day period in normal control mice. In septic groups (LPS, LPS + 1-dose LNPG, and LPS + 2-dose LNPG), the exposure of mice to LPS …

Cardiac Myosin Activator Omecamtiv Mecarbil: Novel Treatment For Systolic Heart Failure, Maat Mack, William H. Frishman

NYMC Faculty Publications

Systolic Heart failure is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by a decrease in cardiac contractility and a reduction in organ perfusion. Current pharmacologic inotropes attempt to improve contractility via indirect mechanisms but are limited in terms of safety and effectiveness. Omecamtiv mecarbil is a novel agent in a new class of drugs known as cardiac myosin activators; their unique mechanism of action involves directly activating the enzymatic pathway in the cardiac myocyte as a way to improve ventricular contraction. Preclinical and clinical trials have found that omecamtiv mecarbil improves cardiac contractility without increasing the risk of any of the harmful …

NYMC Faculty Publications

The advancement of medical treatment and surgical technique, along with the invention of cardiopulmonary bypass, has allowed for long-term survival of patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CHD)-with many women with CHD now reaching child-bearing age and wishing to become pregnant. Pregnancy in these women is a major concern as the physiologic adaptations of pregnancy, including an increased circulating volume, increased cardiac output, reduced systemic vascular resistance, and decreased blood pressure, place a substantial load on the cardiovascular system. These changes are essential to meet the increased maternal and fetal metabolic demands and allow for sufficient placental circulation during gestation. …

Reliability targeted snow loads (RTLs) measure the weight in accumulated snow (i.e. snow load) that a roof is required to support to ensure the probability of failure is suf- ficiently low. This calculation has historically relied upon a probability distribution that characterizes the ratio between the annual maximum ground snow load to the annual max- imum roof snow load, a quantity referred to as Gr. The best available data for estimating Gr comes from Canadian case studies from the 1950s and 1960s. However, much of the data was never digitized, with only approximations of data being made available in scanned …

The prognosis for children with recurrent and/or refractory neuroblastoma (NB) is dismal. The receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1), which is highly expressed on the surface of NB cells, provides a potential target for novel immunotherapeutics. Anti-ROR1 chimeric antigen receptor engineered expanded peripheral blood natural killer (anti-ROR1 CAR exPBNK) cells represent this approach. N-803 is an IL-15 superagonist with enhanced biological activity. In this study, we investigated the and anti-tumor effects of anti-ROR1 CAR exPBNK cells with or without N-803 against ROR1 NB models. Compared to mock exPBNK cells, anti-ROR1 CAR exPBNK cells had significantly enhanced cytotoxicity against ROR1 …

How disability is modeled or understood is determinative in the evolution of both Disability Studies and Disability Politics. By focusing on India, this chapter demonstrates that transformation and metamorphosis in the lives of persons with disabilities is contingent and predicated on the adoption of models to evolve conceptions of disability and disability rights. Upon the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006 by India, a presumption arose that the Indian legal order embraced the social and Human rights models of disability and that disability was no longer to be viewed through the prism …

FOXA family proteins act as pioneer factors by remodeling compact chromatin structures. FOXA1 is crucial for the chromatin binding of the androgen receptor (AR) in both normal prostate epithelial cells and the luminal subtype of prostate cancer (PCa). Recent studies have highlighted the emergence of FOXA2 as an adaptive response to AR signaling inhibition treatments. However, the role of the FOXA1 to FOXA2 transition in regulating cancer lineage plasticity remains unclear. Our study demonstrates that FOXA2 binds to distinct classes of developmental enhancers in multiple AR-independent PCa subtypes, with its binding depending on LSD1. Moreover, we reveal that FOXA2 collaborates …
