Collective Voluntary Agreements And The Production Of Less Polluting Products, Rasha Ahmed, Segerson Kathleen
Collective Voluntary Agreements And The Production Of Less Polluting Products, Rasha Ahmed, Segerson Kathleen
Economics Working Papers
Recently, some industries have collectively agreed not to produce models that do not meet an energy efficiency (and hence an environmental) standard. This paper presents a simple model that can be used to examine a voluntary collective agreement to limit or completely eliminate the low efficiency model of a given product (e.g., a low efficiency washing machine). We show that, when there is competition between firms, a collective agreement to limit or even eliminate production of the polluting model can actually increase profits for all firms in the industry. This suggests that a collective agreement of this type might actually …

Moving Towards Faith: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Spirituality In Adult Education , Frederick Milacci
Moving Towards Faith: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Spirituality In Adult Education , Frederick Milacci
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study examined how eight adult education practitioners understand spirituality. The investigation defined and grounded the notion of spirituality within a specific religious/theological tradition, Christianity broadly defined. Data were collected via informal, conversational, taped interviews, and several themes emerged. The study used these results to interrogate the discourse of spirituality and found several serious problems including: the nondefinition and misuse by the discourse of the term spirituality, the hazards of individualized spirituality caused by imprecise definitions of the term, a failure to address the issues of faith substantively, and the separation in the discourse of religion from spirituality. The study …

Polymorphism and growth behavior of blends of a high-melting fraction of milk fat (HMF) and sunflower oil (SFO) formulated with and without the addition of sucrose esters (SE) P-170, P-1670, and S-170 were studied by pulsed 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and polarized light microscopy. The effect of SE on the solid content maximum (S max) or crystallization rate was observed only at low supercooling (values of ΔT below 15°C). The Avrami k n decreased as n values increased, indicating that SE inhibited growth and impeded nucleation. Addition of SFO modified the polymorphic behavior of milk fat, most likely owing …
Principles Of Mentoring Spiritual Leaders In The Pastoral Ministry Of Augustine Of Hippo, Edward Smither
Principles Of Mentoring Spiritual Leaders In The Pastoral Ministry Of Augustine Of Hippo, Edward Smither
Faculty Dissertations
Though Augustine is highly regarded for his contribution to philosophy and theology, his primary occupation for the last forty years of his life was serving as the bishop of Hippo Regius. A highly personal man with a natural inclination to friendship, Augustine was a bishop-monk who served the church while living in a monastic community with other clergy. Hence, he made monks out of his clergy and regarded the monastery as a group that existed to serve the church. Through intimate contact with the clergy of Hippo as well as spiritual leaders of the fourth and fifth century African church, …
Reasons Why Church Members Do Not Regularly Attend Church, Alan C. Mccullough
Reasons Why Church Members Do Not Regularly Attend Church, Alan C. Mccullough
Doctoral Dissertations
This project is an attempt to discover the reasons why people who profess Jesus Christ as Savior and are members of a Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia church do not regularly attend church. A survey was mailed to church members requesting reasons they do not attend and whether Scripture addresses attendance. Arguments were made from Scriptural exegesis, Church doctrine, Church history, and particularly Baptist history that believers in the Christ attend church regularly. The goal of this project is to better inform and equip churches for reaching and ministering to those who do not regularly attend.

1. Introduction
The sequencing of nucleic acids and the subsequent analysis of their encoded the genes and proteins has revolutionized biological sciences and allowed for the determination of evolutionary origins and biochemical potential of organisms. While the technology to determine molecular sequence data has become extremely powerful in terms of both automation and thoughput, sequence analysis technology has lagged behind, unable to efficiently keep up with the vast amount of sequence data being generated both in individual labs and by researchers worldwide. The foundation of robust sequence analysis is dependent on the building and maintaining of project sequence databases (PSD) …

Peroxyl Radical Clocks, Bill Roschek, Keri A. Tallman, Christopher L. Rector, Jason G. Gillmore, Derek A. Pratt, Carlo Punta, Ned A. Porter
Faculty Publications
A series of peroxyl radical clocks has been developed and calibrated based on the competition between the unimolecular β-fragmentation (kβ) of a peroxyl radical and its bimolecular reaction with a hydrogen atom donor (kH). These clocks are based on either methyl linoleate or allylbenzene and were calibrated directly with α-tocopherol or methyl linoleate, which have well-established rate constants for reaction with peroxyl radicals (kH-tocopherol = 3.5 × 106 M-1 s-1, kH-linoleate = 62 M-1 s-1). This peroxyl radical clock methodology has been successfully applied to determine inhibition and propagation rate constants ranging from 100 to 107 M-1 s-1.

Crystallization studies are usually performed under isothermal conditions. Kinetic parameters characterizing the isothermal nucleation and growth processes can be obtained using classical nucleation and growth models. However, crystallization regimes found in nature, as well as those used in food and pharmaceutical processing, are rarely isothermal. Focusing on the nucleation stage, the approach followed in this work was to define a new parameter to characterize the driving force of nucleation, the supercooling-time exposure (β), which not only depends on the difference between the melting temperature (Tm) and the onset temperature of nucleation (Tc) ΔTc but also on the induction time of …
Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag
Alternative Models Of Knowledge Production: A Step Forward In Information Literacy As A Liberal Art, Shilpa Shanbhag
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information literacy is embedded within the traditional disciplinary model of knowledge production wherein the role of the scholar/expert and the process of peer-review are emphasized. Exclusive reference to this model is inadequate in informing the production of knowledge outside of formal academic setting and consequently inadequate in supporting the objectives of liberal learning. Shapiro and Hughes' concept of information literacy as a liberal art provides a useful framework for discussion on alternative models of knowledge production.

Perceived Smoking Environment And Smoking Initiation Among Multi-Ethnic Urban Girls, Tracy R. Nichols, Amanda Birnbaum, Sara Birnel, Gilbert J. Botvin
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose
To examine associations between the perceived smoking environment and smoking initiation among urban multi-ethnic adolescent girls in New York City.
Methods
Self-report surveys completed in grades 7, 8, and 9 assessed girls’ (n = 858) smoking initiation, and perceived smoking environment (family smoking, friends’ smoking, smoking norms, and cigarette availability). Carbon monoxide breath samples were collected from girls using a variation of the bogus pipeline procedure.
Results
Differences were found in smoking prevalence with white girls reporting the highest prevalence of smoking at baseline and the greatest increase in smoking prevalence from seventh to eighth grade. Black girls reported …

Federal Environmental Impact Statements: Overly Inflated Needs Result In Needlessenvironmental Harm, Gorden Steinhoff
Federal Environmental Impact Statements: Overly Inflated Needs Result In Needlessenvironmental Harm, Gorden Steinhoff
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
According to federal regulations, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) must include a statement of the purpose of, and need for, the proposed action. Unfortunately, the regulations do not specify how to determine the need. Typically, the declared need for a proposed action includes items that are not genuine needs. They are necessary conditions for achieving goals that are merely desired. The result of such overly inflated needs is, literally, needless environmental harm. The author presents criteria for identifying needs that have been developed by philosophers David Braybrooke and Garrett Thomson. These criteria are useful for gauging how far federal agencies …

Nebraska Reading First Winter Report 2005-2006, Guy Trainin, Oren Yagil
Nebraska Reading First Winter Report 2005-2006, Guy Trainin, Oren Yagil
Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design
The Winter Progress Report offers an overview of student mid-year achievement. Student achievement will be interpreted through two separate comparisons. In each section we start with a comparison of this year’s winter achievement and last year’s mid-year achievement; a between cohorts comparison. This comparison will show whether the mid-year achievement of Reading First schools is higher than last year as we anticipated. A second comparison focuses on following student achievement from fall to winter of 2005-2006 school year. This within cohort comparison shows the sustainability of this year’s baseline.

The Water Vapor Permeability Of Polycrystalline Fat Barrier Films, Silvana Martini, D. A. Kim, M. Ollivon, A. G. Marangoni
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
The water vapor permeability of fat barrier films has been associated with structural characteristics such as polymorphism, crystal size, and chemical composition, among others. However, no mechanistic models have been proposed to describe this relationship. In this study, we have determined the effects of processing conditions on the structure and physicochemical characteristics of four fats and their relationship to water vapor permeability. Results suggest that the solids' volume fraction and the domain size of the fat crystals seem to be the most important factors controlling water vapor migration. Moreover, materials with relatively large crystalline domains will yield malleable films with …

Queen Weights Of Polygyne Solenopsis Invicta And S. Xyloni Suggest Reduced Competitive Ability, Ricardo A. Ramirez, D C. Thompson
Biology Faculty Publications
Solenopsis invicta Buren populations were confirmed in southern New Mexico, resulting in a quarantine of Doña Ana County in 1998; however, Solenopsis xyloni McCook remains the dominant fire ant. This study compared the queen weights and egg production of polygyne colonies of both species. There was no difference in live weights of the major worker caste; however, queens were very different in weight. In this study, S. invicta queens weighed almost twice as much as S. xyloni (S. invicta = 11.32 ± 0.25mg vs. S. xyloni = 6.40 ± 0.30mg) and produced over 50% as many eggs as S. xyloni. …

Anion Exchange Membrane Soil Nitrate Predicts Turfgrass Color And Yield., Salvatore Mangiafico, Karl Guillard
Anion Exchange Membrane Soil Nitrate Predicts Turfgrass Color And Yield., Salvatore Mangiafico, Karl Guillard
Plant Science Articles
Desirable nitrogen (N) management practices for turfgrass supply sufficient N for high quality turf while limiting excess soil N. Previous studies suggested the potential of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for predicting turfgrass color, quality, or yield. However, these studies suggested a wide range of critical soil nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) values across sample dates. A field experiment, in randomized complete block design with treatments consisting of nine N application rates, was conducted on a mixed species cool-season turfgrass lawn across two growing seasons. Every 2 wk from May to October, turfgrass color was assessed with three different reflectance meters, and soil NO3-N …
Must All Be Saved? A Kierkegaardian Response To Theological Universalism, Jack E. Mulder
Must All Be Saved? A Kierkegaardian Response To Theological Universalism, Jack E. Mulder
Faculty Publications
In this paper, I consider how a Kierkegaardian could respond critically to the question of strong theological universalism, i.e., the belief that all individuals must eventually be reconciled to God and experience everlasting happiness. A Kierkegaardian would likely reject what Thomas Talbott has called "conservative theism," but has the resources to mount a sustained attack on the view that all individuals must experience everlasting happiness. Some have seen that Kierkegaard has some potential in this regard, but a full Kierkegaardian response to strong theological universalism has yet to be given. In this paper, I give such an account.
