Bridging Prevention And Health: Exploring Community Perceptions Of Intimate Partner Violence In Rural Honduras, Javeed Sukhera, Catherine Cerulli, Barbara A. Gawinski, Diane Morse

Paediatrics Publications

This qualitative study rooted in community-based participatory research principles utilized semi-structured interviews with 2 focus groups (n = 9) with female healthcare volunteers (FCVs) and 3 male key informants who were community leaders (MCLs). The study aimed to examine how a rural Honduran community defines and responds to intimate partner violence (IPV) in order to lay the foundation for future interventions. Based on grounded theory, the authors assessed for common themes across transcripts. Authors found that a number of participants denied the existence of IPV. Perspectives on the causes and definitions of IPV varied between FCVs and MCLs. All participants …

Extravillous trophoblast (EVT) cells of the human placenta invade the uterine decidua and utero-placental arteries to establish an efficient exchange of key molecules between maternal and fetal blood. Trophoblast invasion is stringently regulated in situ both positively and negatively by a variety of factors at the fetal-maternal interface to maintain a healthy utero-placental homeostasis. One such factor, decorin, a transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta binding, leucine-rich proteoglycan produced by the decidua, negatively regulates EVT proliferation, migration, and invasiveness independent of TGFbeta. We reported that these decorin actions were mediated by its binding to multiple tyrosine kinase receptors, including vascular endothelial growth factor …

Vitamin D, whose levels vary seasonally with sunlight, is activated to 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D 3 that binds the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and transcriptionally regulates intestinal CYP3A4 expression. We genotyped VDR polymorphisms and determined their associations with intestinal CYP3A4 and with midazolam pharmacokinetics, and whether intestinal CYP3A4 levels/activity varied seasonally. The VDR BsmIG>A (rs1544410) polymorphism was significantly associated with CYP3A4 jejunal expression/activity, with CYP3A4 duodenal mRNA, and with midazolam area under the curve (AUC). Intestinal CYP3A4 expression/activity was significantly higher in biopsies with the VDR promoter polymorphisms Cdx2-3731G>A and GATA-1012A>G that increase VDR activation of target genes. Duodenal …

Brain malformations are individually rare but collectively common causes of developmental disabilities. Many forms of malformation occur sporadically and are associated with reduced reproductive fitness, pointing to a causative role for de novo mutations. Here, we report a study of Baraitser-Winter syndrome, a well-defined disorder characterized by distinct craniofacial features, ocular colobomata and neuronal migration defect. Using whole-exome sequencing of three proband-parent trios, we identified de novo missense changes in the cytoplasmic acting-encoding genes ACTB and ACTG1 in one and two probands, respectively. Sequencing of both genes in 15 additional affected individuals identified disease-causing mutations in all probands, including two …

Graduate Admissions In Pediatric Psychology: The Importance Of Undergraduate Training, Bryan T. Karazsia, C. Meghan Mcmurtry

Paediatrics Publications

Objectives To determine the minimum and ideal undergraduate experiences in pediatric psychology expected by graduate faculty; to determine the experiences current trainees gained prior to graduate admission; to compare trainee experiences with faculty expectations.MethodsFaculty and current trainees completed surveys. Results Faculty expectations of minimum and ideal undergraduate training were highest for research methods and evaluation, paralleling the highest level of undergraduate training reported by trainees. Research goodness of fit also emerged as a critical admissions factor. Conclusions The Results offer empirical evidence for desirable undergraduate training related to pediatric psychology, particularly with respect to research experiences. The findings have implications …

Maternal use of certain drugs during pregnancy can result in transient neonatal signs consistent with withdrawal or acute toxicity or cause sustained signs consistent with a lasting drug effect. In addition, hospitalized infants who are treated with opioids or benzodiazepines to provide analgesia or sedation may be at risk for manifesting signs of withdrawal. This statement updates information about the clinical presentation of infants exposed to intrauterine drugs and the therapeutic options for treatment of withdrawal and is expanded to include evidence-based approaches to the management of the hospitalized infant who requires weaning from analgesics or sedatives. The extraembryonic endoderm of mammals is essential for nutritive support of the fetus and patterning of the early embryo. Visceral and parietal endoderm are major subtypes of this lineage with the former exhibiting most, if not all, of the embryonic patterning properties. Extraembryonic endoderm (XEN) cell lines derived from the primitive endoderm of mouse blastocysts represent a cell culture model of this lineage, but are biased towards parietal endoderm in culture and in chimeras. In an effort to promote XEN cells to adopt visceral endoderm character we have mimicked different aspects of the in vivo environment. We found that BMP …

BACKGROUND: The incidence of medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MCADD) was estimated using the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) in Canada over a three-year period. Data regarding mutations associated with MCADD cases were collected wherever available. METHODS: Data were collected over a 36-month period using a monthly mailed questionnaire distributed through the CPSP to more than 2500 Canadian paediatricians, medical geneticists and paediatric pathologists. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: During the three years of MCADD surveillance, 46 confirmed cases out of a total of 71 reported cases were found - an average of approximately 15 cases per year. This rate is lower than …

Atypical Neural Responses To Phonological Detail In Children With Developmental Language Impairments, Lisa M.D. Archibald, Marc F. Joanisse

Paediatrics Publications

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a developmental disorder affecting language learning across a number of domains. These difficulties are thought to be related to difficulties processing auditory speech, given findings of imperfect auditory processing across nonspeech tones, individual speech sounds and syllables. However the relationship of auditory difficulties to language development remains unclear. Perceiving connected speech involves resolving coarticulation, the imperceptible blending of speech movements across adjacent sounds, which gives rise to subtle variations in speech sounds. The present study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine neural responses to coarticulation in school age children with and without SLI. Atypical neural …

While Magnetic Resonance Imaging is capable of separating water and fat components in the body, mapping of magnetic field inhomogeneities is essential for the successful application of this process. In this study, we address the problem of field map estimation using a convex-relaxed max-flow method. We propose a novel two-stage approach that leads to the global optimum of the proposed problem. The first stage minimizes the signal residuals via a convexrelaxed minimum description length (MDL)-based approach. The MDL-based labeling model penalizes the total number of appearing labels, which helps to avoid field map errors when abrupt changes in field homogeneity …
