Procedures For A Long Term Retention Data For The Analysis And Design Of A Rudder For A Marine Vessel: Step Documentation, Franklin A. Montejo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The process of mechanical design involves many steps, starting from a customer need. Then the engineer estimates the possible solutions until an optimal product is achieved. Through these design steps, information is created and exchanged among different design activities. Currently the industry lacks a means to preserve this information flow for future use.;In the end, much of the information generated in the design process may not be available due to obsolete software used to create the design; one missing part of the process; a missing link between the design tasks; unknown context of the design, and some other possibilities.;The present …

Short Historical Overview And Comparison Of The Pitch Width And Speed Rates Of The Vibrato Used In Sonatas And Partitas For Solo Violin By Johann Sebastian Bach As Found In Recordings Of Famous Violinists Of The Twentieth And The Twenty-First Centuries, Tomislav Dimov Dec 2010

Short Historical Overview And Comparison Of The Pitch Width And Speed Rates Of The Vibrato Used In Sonatas And Partitas For Solo Violin By Johann Sebastian Bach As Found In Recordings Of Famous Violinists Of The Twentieth And The Twenty-First Centuries, Tomislav Dimov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This doctoral research project explores the use of violin vibrato present in recordings of the Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006 by Johann Sebastian Bach, made by forty prominent violinists during the last 100 years. It reports strictly on two of the most objectively measurable and characteristic parameters of the vibrato---its width and rate.;Forming an essential part of the violinist's central repertory for more than a century, Bach's cycle has received the highest levels of scholarly and artistic attention and the matter of vibrato has certainly been examined. However, to date there has been no systematic study …

Reovirus As A Probe To Study Induction Of Anti-Viral Immunity And Modulation Of Peanut Allergy, Ronald J. Fecek Jr. Aug 2010

Reovirus As A Probe To Study Induction Of Anti-Viral Immunity And Modulation Of Peanut Allergy, Ronald J. Fecek Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Infectious diarrheal diseases are a major burden to human health worldwide. A proportion of those diarrheal diseases are caused by enteric viruses that gain access through the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the human gastrointestinal mucosa represents an important route of entry for enteric viruses. Enteric viruses are taken up by gastrointestinal mucosal dendritic cells (DCs) that induce and shape adaptive immunity, however, activation of mucosal DCs by enteric viruses is poorly understood. The research presented in this dissertation is focused on deciphering the requirements for activation of murine DCs in response to an enteric virus as well as the subsequent generation …

Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems In Railroad Transportation, Peter Joseph Dailey Aug 2010

Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite Systems In Railroad Transportation, Peter Joseph Dailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Transportation of freight by rail is an exceptionally fuel-efficient mode. Rail's exceptional efficiency comes with a high cost for inspection and maintenance of the railway to insure train safety at design speed. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) imposes operational safety by requiring compliance with regulations that rely on timely track inspection.;Further, new standards for train movement authority, known collectively as positive train control, require knowledge of a train's exact location on the railway. This knowledge has traditionally relied on wired track circuits due to the need to distinguish a train's location on two or more parallel tracks.;The research examines a …

Microfluidic Interfaces For Coupling Hydrodynamic To Electrokinetic Flow And Microchannel Electrophoresis To Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry, Brent R. Reschke May 2010

Microfluidic Interfaces For Coupling Hydrodynamic To Electrokinetic Flow And Microchannel Electrophoresis To Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry, Brent R. Reschke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Presented in this dissertation is a microfluidic interface for coupling hydrodynamic and electrokinetic flows, this interface was first studied theoretically and then experimentally to evaluate the electrophoretic extraction of a negatively charged analyte from a perpendicular hydrodynamic flow stream. Secondly the interface was used to perform the simultaneous extraction and separation of a cationic peptide and anionic proteins with low electroosmotic flow.;In addition, two important aspects of creating a microfluidic device to couple microchannel electrophoresis with mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization were also studied. These aspects included the electrospray emitter from which the electrospray originates and the incorporation of the …

Electric Power Distribution Expansion Planning Using Distributed Generation Sources And Storages, Ruben R. Avagyan Jan 2010

Electric Power Distribution Expansion Planning Using Distributed Generation Sources And Storages, Ruben R. Avagyan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Electric Power Distribution Expansion Planning (PDEP) is concerned with finding the best topology of the power distribution grid and component sizing such that power demand at each load bus is satisfied and some objectives are optimized. In this research, a new integrated time-phased problem is considered, where demand changes through the planning horizon and distributed generation sources and energy storages are integrated into the planning process. The growth of power demand in consecutive periods may require an upgrade of existing or construction of new substations and/or feeders during the planning time-span. An alternative solution to meet the growing demand and …
