For this project, I investigated the importance of bibliotherapy with school-aged children through the construction of my own children’s book that is focused around social-emotional aspects that are important for development. Reptile fear is prominent across many cultures. Anti-reptilian attitudes can lead to anti-conservation attitudes towards reptiles. Person-animal interaction has been shown to decrease fear desensitization and increase positive attitudes towards "unpopular" animals. My project demonstrates the effectiveness of live animal presentation in dispelling negative attitudes of reptiles. However, due to the sample size of the project, further research is highly suggested.

Can a YA story be effectively told through the lenses of side characters that typically exist to further the main character’s plot? What gives a side character agency? How do you make a hero without ever getting close to them through the narrator? This Honors Project seeks to answer those questions through a YA-style novella in which four different "side characters" tell their stories, and the hero's point of view is never followed.

This paper focuses on the ability of the mimic octopus Thaumoctopus mimicus to be operantly conditioned to an auditory stimulus. The octopus is known to be the most advanced of the invertebrates and has learning abilities that are comparable to vertebrates in spite of their differences in brain structure. These animals have been shown to react to visual and tactile stimuli and can be operantly conditioned to perform behaviors to obtain a food reward. The purpose of this literature review and these consultations is to present the demands and needs of ESL volunteers in order that they may be effective teachers. These demands of ESL volunteers will be categorized according to the eight domains of the 2008 TESOL International Association Standards for ESL/EFL Teachers of Adults Framework. The literature review comprised of a thematic search of past and current research. The consultation process was semi-structured, phenomenological, and qualitative. Anyone who experienced the transition to online course delivery in Spring 2020 probably had an opinion on it. Twenty-nine respondents completed this 20-minute survey on technical, emotional, pedagogical, and administrative aspects of the transition, including both faculty and students. The data gathered here offers an enduring testimony of their lived experience, and may inform a variety of pedagogical research.

The Queer Literature Club was established August 30, 2018 with the purpose of distributing young adult literature with LGBTQ+ characters and themes as well as providing a space space for LGBTQ+ students. The QLC spent the 2018-2019 academic year establishing itself as a thriving community and has gained standing as an officially recognized campus organization. The club is open to students who want to see themselves reflected in the literature they read - literature meant for an age that is particularly difficult for LGBTQ+ youth - and allies. However, through Wallace Thurman's novel The Blacker the Berry, he is able to illustrate the struggles of racism within the African American society, having detrimental effects on the psychological aspect of racism as well. This paper reviews a short case study on High School Students’ opinions of social studies education. This was conducted in response to a 1984 study, “Why Kids Don’t Like Social Studies” by Schug, Todd, and Beery. This study took place at a suburban high school within senior level social studies classes. The students were given an anonymous survey in accordance with IRB standards which asked them there opinions about the social studies classes they had taken. Ever since Akira Kurosawa directed Shinchinin No Samurai in 1954, American filmmakers have repeatedly reused its plot, most recently in Antoine Fuqua's Magnificent Seven (2016). This paper uses Karl Marx and bell hooks to analyze the original film, John Sturges' Magnificent Seven (1960), and the remake to see how each filmmaker used the same structure to discuss class, race, and nationality in their respective locations and times. This paper also discusses the cinematography used to support those themes. Kurosawa made his epic in postwar Japan when the nation became pacifist, and the film examines the death of a warrior class …

This project is a lecture recital including the performance of four musical works from different countries as well as a lecture Astor Piazzolla's Histoire Du Tango. The four pieces performed in this recital were Eldin Burton's Sonatina for flute and piano, the first movement of Astor Piazzolla's Histoire Du Tango, Hirota's Shikararete, and Bela Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances for piccolo and piano. Before performing the Piazzolla, there was a lecture which included the teaching of the musical aspects of the tango within this piece, a short biography of Piazzolla, and a historical look at the four movements of this piece. …

Bogolanfini are intricately designed textiles created by Bamana women in Mali. The cloths are created through a natural process, producing rich designs and motifs that address stories, narratives, female-specific ideas or relate to historical events. Each textile is hand made for a particular individual and given to her as she enters adulthood, an event marked by puberty and clitoridectomy. During this time, the cloth is used to absorb blood from the operation, a process transferring the woman’s spirit into the bogolanfini. As she progresses through life, the utility of her bogolanfini extends to absorbing her life-blood during menstruation, first intercourse …

Implementing and customizing a discovery layer affects not only users but also instruction librarians. To address the teaching implications, librarians from our mid-sized state university engaged in reflective practice to adjust our instruction methods in one-shot sessions. This self-assessment led us to questions about which potential discovery layer customizations would best meet users’ needs. For this reason, we surveyed users regarding their preferences in managing discovery layer results. Presenters will share the benefits received from the reflective practice, provide the results of our librarian and user assessments, and discuss how these informed our teaching and tweaking of the discovery layer.

To address the ways users interact with information introduced by digital technologies, many librarians have looked beyond information literacy to incorporate multiple literacies into their teaching. This presentation will highlight a credit library course that was reimagined around the comprehensive conceptual framework of metaliteracy. This prezi is a presentation on community partnerships in urban schools. After describing what partnerships are and how they operate, the presentation then focuses on three case studies. One case study looks at Toledo Public School and its artist in resident program. Another case study examines PS 112 in Manhattan, NY and its partnership with the Teachers College (Columbia, New York). The final case study focues on Global Tech Prep in New York City and its work with Google, Apple, Citizen Schools and Computer Associates.
