Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison Dec 2003

Female And Male Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport And Higher Education: A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment, C. Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The termination of a collegiate athletic career is inevitable for all student athletes. The purpose of this study was to explore student athletes’ perceptions of the athletic career transition process. One-hundred-andforty- three (n = 143) National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II student athletes were administered the Life After Sports Scale (LASS) designed by the authors. The LASS is a 58-item mixed method inventory. The scope of this inquiry explored the qualitative section, which examined participants’ perceptions that were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete who made the transition out of collegiate sport successfully. Three major …

Biotechniques: Remarks On The Intensity Of Conditioning, William Braham Dec 2003

Biotechniques: Remarks On The Intensity Of Conditioning, William Braham

William W. Braham

An exploration of the concept of Biotechniques, adapted from the term originally coined by Frederick Kiesler in 1939. Biotechniques derive from three basic propositions: first, that technology was based on steadily evolving human needs; second, that despite their origin in human needs, technological systems develop according to their own “laws of heredity;” and thirdly, that the final criteria of technological design is not technical performance, but human health. Applying these premises to the technology of conditioning contemporary buildings yields two conclusions. First, environmental conditioning is not just a collection of devices whose performance can be optimized. They are complex systems …

Innovation Education In Nsw Design And Technology Curriculum, Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann

Dr Angela Turner

Do technology teachers in secondary schools and academic stakeholders share the national vision of knowledge and innovation when implementing Design and Technology curricula? Directions for an innovation climate have been endorsed by the federal government, and demanded by various industry groups, since 1996. This paper explores the extent to which education providers of secondary schooling have embraced the call for teaching and developing innovation capacities through technology curriculum. The Australian Science, Technology and Engineering Council (ASTEC) in 1996 underpinned “foresight” as an essential dimension to our thinking which attempts to capture the dynamics of change and the need to incorporate …

Using Gall Wasps On Oaks To Test Broad Ecological Concepts, P.W. Price, Warren G. Abrahamson Ii, M.D. Hunter, G. Melika

Warren G. Abrahamson, II

Planning conservation of insect herbivores requires knowing what needs to be conserved and developing a set of predictor variables that aid management. We conducted a state-wide survey to examine the species richness of gall wasps ( Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) on six oak species dominant in the threatened scrub-oak vegetation in peninsular Florida. Eighty-eight cynipid species were recorded; 23 were new species to Florida (a 35% increase), including 17 species new to science and 6 species newly recorded in the state. The cynipid species represented 68% of cynipids of Florida, on only 24% of oak species sampled. This fauna represents a hotspot …

Language, Power, And Social Interaction (Fall 2004 Syllabus), Adam Hodges Dec 2003

Language, Power, And Social Interaction (Fall 2004 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

The objective of this course is to critically examine the role of language in articulating, maintaining, and subverting relations of power in society. We will ground our study by first looking at basic ideas on linguistic relativity, the idea that one adjusts to reality in large part through language. Then, we will explore the many dimensions of power in society and the role that language plays in this diagram of power. We will focus specifically on media language and political language; and critically analyze examples of discourse in an attempt to understand the power relations that undergird social interactions. This …

Masonry And Orangeism: More Fraternal And Less Vitrolic In A Changing Scene, Paul J. Rich

Paul J. Rich

The Orange Order has figured in Irish history and in the problems of Northern Ireland for two centuries. Although it has many Masonic affinities, it is an international movement (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, parts of Africa) with it sown distinct culture, and its rituals at times have supported a virulent Protestantism.

The Problem Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, Kresten Jespersen, Heather Jespersen Dec 2003

The Problem Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, Kresten Jespersen, Heather Jespersen

Kresten Jespersen

This article discusses the problem of giving subject access to works of art. We survey both concept-based and content-based access by computers and by indexers/catalogers respectively, as well as issues of interoperability, database and indexer consistency, and cataloging standards. The authors, both of whom are trained art historians, question attempts to mystify fine art subject matter by the creation of clever library science systems that are executed by the naive. Only when trained art historians and knowledgeable catalogers are finally responsible for providing subject access to works of art, will true interoperability and consistency happen.
