Should We Think About The Scale When We Weigh The Pig?, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard
Should We Think About The Scale When We Weigh The Pig?, Kathy E. Clarke, Gretchen A. Hazard
Libraries
To make a heavier pig, then it makes perfect sense to weigh it – twice – prior to feeding him and afterwards. But what if we more interested in the overall health of the pig, or, if our big is rounder post-food, or if our pig can make pig-fattening food choices? To answer those questions, assessors would need to consider a highly-attuned instrument or one that measures something different than the information a scale provides. In this presentation, we hope to engage participants to consider the how of assessment and in particular consider how we assess influences what we find …

How Laws Are Made: The Courts, Sharon Bradley
Presentations
Law, as defined in Black’s Law Dictionary, is “a body of rules of action or conduct prescribed by controlling authority and having binding legal force.” Our laws come from our three branches of Government: legislative, executive, and judicial. These webinars will focus on the law-making activities of each branch, the documents that are created during the process, and how they are used by lawyers and legal researchers.
Courts interpret statutes, determine constitutionality, and create law as part of our common law system.

Librarians and instructional designers (IDs) from a university in the U.S. will describe the partnership formed to promote no-cost textbook solutions (OER, library-sourced) in the face of a restrictive environment. The institution is divided in two tiers: the President's Office, which oversees non-academic functions such as Business Services, and the Provost's Office, which is responsible for teaching and learning. This creates an inherent tension concerning course materials and revenue, troubling the conception of education as a fundamentally shared practice. Our group aimed to promote change at the university level, while also collaborating to facilitate the efforts of faculty.
Typically, the …

The presenters shared lessons learned from using OCLC WorldShare Management System (WMS) Analytics to gather statistics and data for both internal and external reporting purposes. Existing WMS reporting functionality simplifies special projects such as inventories and clean-up initiatives. However, both Collection Evaluation and Report Designer have limitations that make getting accurate collections numbers difficult due to gaps in the available data.

What We Stand To Gain: Librarians Leading Collaborative Assignment Design, Kacy Lundstrom, Rachel Wishkoski, Erin Davis
What We Stand To Gain: Librarians Leading Collaborative Assignment Design, Kacy Lundstrom, Rachel Wishkoski, Erin Davis
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
One of many shifting areas for academic librarians is their role in the design of research assignments. While many librarians possess both expertise and the desire to engage in assignment design, doing so in practice requires deep collaboration and careful role negotiation with discipline faculty. Faculty, who themselves have varied degrees of formal pedagogical training, may not recognize librarians as teachers with this instructional design expertise. Finding the “collaboration sweet spot” can be difficult to achieve in spite of best intentions (Junisabai, Lowe, & Tagge, 2016). However, librarian participation in creating authentic, scaffolded research opportunities is crucial if we are …
