Mean Girls: A Feminist Re-Reading Of The Rivalry Theme In High Victorian Paintings, Jennifer Mayer
Mean Girls: A Feminist Re-Reading Of The Rivalry Theme In High Victorian Paintings, Jennifer Mayer
Jennifer Mayer
The portrayal of romantic rivalries represents an engaging topic, especially when put in the context of Victorian England. This presentation analyzes the significance of women as rivals as depicted in select painted images of the High Victorian era (1851-1867). I discuss the possible backlash component of the paintings to women's rights advances of the time, and analyze the paintings in terms of possible sites of female empowerment and resistance.

Incorporating Visual Literacy Into Academic Libraries, Jennifer Mayer, Cheryl Goldenstein

The brain is predominantly visual, with ninety percent of sensory input coming from visual sources (Jensen 2000). Visual arts in particular stimulate the right hemisphere of the brain, and combining visual with verbal activities helps reinforce learning. Millennials generally prefer graphics to text. At the same time, using images indiscriminately may simply serve as clutter—or even convey an inaccurate or negative message. How can librarians use visuals effectively in our web pages, tutorials, handouts, and classroom presentations? What constitutes an “image” and what are some resources for finding images? What services can librarians provide for students whose projects are becoming …

Robot Cataloger - Using Macro Express To Transfer Records From Ms Access To Marc Format, Martha Gunnarson
Martha Gunnarson
Abstract: Students at WPI must complete 2 projects during their academic career. Written project reports have been housed at the Gordon Library for many years, but never cataloged. A web interface with the existing database allows limited searching. A stand-alone Macro recording program was used to transfer the data from MS Access into MARC records in our Voyager online catalog.
