Purpose:
- Test sex differences in a spatial (Escape Maze) and motor task (Log Roll)
- Manipulate E2 and aromatase levels in order to differentiate roles of E2 and aromatase in recovery post-CB lesion
- Confirm steroids aid recovery in spatial but not motor tasks post-CB lesion
- Determine whether steroids differentially influence male and female recovery in cognitive and motor tasks

Zebra finches (ZF) are sexually dimorphic. In captive ZFs, enriched diets increase cheek area and alter color, increasing adult male attractiveness. In the wild, breeding and brooding occur when proteinaceous seeds available. Our experiment tests whether supplemental egg food benefits captive non-breeding adults and juveniles.Pre-experiment, adults fed eggs, cuttlebone & bread 2x week. Other facets of our experiment showed enriched diet led to decreased reactive CORT levels and increased body mass, with the largest increase in females.

Introduction:
- Brain damage causes a secondary wave of degeneration
- Aromatase is upregulated in glia post-injury
- Aromatase (AROM) converts testosterone to estradiol (E2) E2 is neuroprotective and limits cell death
- E2 is linked to cancer, stroke, and male infertility Genistein (GEN) is a soybean phytoestrogen with strong estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) affinity
- Genistein could be used clinically for neuroprotection
- ERβ receptors are abundant in the cerebellum AROM expression in the cerebellum is constitutively low
- Zebra Finch (ZF) brains have high neuroplasticity
- The ZF cerebellum is ideal for neuroplasticity research

The Effects Of Acute Hypoxia Exposure On Cognitive Function, John W. Sepko, Zakary Patrick, Parker Wilkerson, Madison Hulsey, Paul D. Loprizini
Neuroscience Research Showcase
Introduction: There is conflicting literature as to the effects of varying levels of hypoxia on cognition. Recent work by Loprinzi et al. (2019) demonstrated that moderate levels of hypoxia exposure increased memory (cognitive) performance. However, research investigating severe hypoxic exposure has shown immediate cognitive impairments (Nation, 2017). To reconcile these mixed findings, the present study aimed to investigate the extent to which varying levels of hypoxia affect cognition. Methods: Eighty-seven participants were recruited using convenience sampling at the University of Mississippi and completed a within-subject study design. The first lab visit was conducted for familiarizing the participant to the lab …

Comparison Of Gender Ideology Between Persons Who Lived In A Single-Parent Vs Two-Parent Household, Cecili Stanley
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024
Purpose of this project was to review the influences of gender ideology. It is noted in today's social sphere, there is an ongoing debate regarding gender roles in and outside of the home. The research was intended to review the effects of gender role ideology between single-parent and two-parent households and verify if male dominance influences gender ideology. On the contrary, the results suggested religion having a greater influence on gender ideology.

For this research proposal, I decided to analyze the question of how the Justinianic Plague affected Eastern Roman politics. The benefits of taking a Research-Intensive class are easy to see, especially as a History major. Through constructing this research proposal, I noticed how my skills of critical thinking, source analysis, and comprehension of evidence improved. By participating in this project, this has continued to confirm my desire to pursue even higher education.

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
Our service learning project focused on working with children who have special needs. Our volunteer work was completed at Camp Boggy Creek, a non-profit camp devoted to providing a “typical” camp experience for children with medical issues or disabilities. We completed 35 hours of service while supporting children and their families as they came to camp and stayed for a weekend of fun activities and relaxation. This experience has allowed us to realize the impact that special needs can have on a child and their families. The difficulties these families may face (whether it be emotionally, physically, or monetarily) can …

The Importance Of Mental Health Amongst The Lgbtq+ Community, Adrian Perotin
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
When it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, it has become known with more studies and research that many in the community have suffered through traumatic experiences regarding sexual assault and/or violence. This has caused a big impact on the mental health of the victims, but because there is not enough resources to the LGBTQ+ community that are open to them, those victims have a hard time recovering or feeling seen. Amongst the community are of course the youth coming in from the next generations that may unfortunately deal with these issues in safety and mental health, so they deserve to …

Caring 4 The Kids Of Chs, Courtney Williams
High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023
The purpose of my project is to spread awareness, knowledge, and spread the excitement I had from doing this. The biggest takeaway from this experience is that it is very easy to help someone. It doesn't take much all of my supplies was from the dollar store. I was more excited about the kids seeing my creative skills than anything. I also want to normalize the fact that people struggle and its a human thing. Sometimes we need help and it is very much okay to give without expecting something back in return.

Making American Opera After Einstein, Ryan Ebright Dr.
Making American Opera After Einstein, Ryan Ebright Dr.
ICS Fellow Lectures
In the wake of the avant-garde opera Einstein on the Beach in 1976, opera in the United States experienced a renaissance, one which has continued to the present. My book project, Making American Opera after Einstein, centers on contemporary attempts to remake opera in an American image. In it, I detail how American opera—as a genre, a sphere of cultural institutions, an expression of national identity—has transformed significantly over the past four decades. Whereas many composers embrace operatic convention, tailoring their operas to audiences through adaptations of cherished American stories, others attempt to test the genre’s aesthetic boundaries. By exploring …

The Human Gut Microbiome, Tammy J. Ladue
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
Although the gut microbiome has been known for many years, it wasn’t until the mid-1970’s that a relationship was hypothesized in medical journals. With the advent of the Human Genome Project in 2001 (Adak & Khan, 2019) further investigation into the types and relationship of the microbes in the GI tract were seriously studied.
Utilizing DNA & RNA tracking and culture techniques found during the Genome Project, more information was found on the Gut Microbiome. It was as of 2017 that the knowledge on the Microbiome began to show promise. It has been speculated that the GI tract has approximately …
