Data For The Distribution Of Flat-Backed Canteens, Kristina L. Whitney
Data For The Distribution Of Flat-Backed Canteens, Kristina L. Whitney
Anthropology Graduate Student Publications
Since water transport vessels are often a highly conservative vessel form, the appearance of a new water vessel shape—the flat-backed canteen—in the American Southwest around the time of Spanish arrival raises questions concerning its introduction. These data are the basis of a study aimed at documenting the presence of the flat-backed canteen in the American Southwest from the sixteenth through twentieth centuries and explores changes in their distribution and use through time. A total of 128 flat-backed canteens were analyzed from archaeological and ethnographic collections, while 97 additional New World canteens were documented through an extensive literature review. Its contemporary …
Rabbit Exploitation In The Middle Paleolithic At Gruta Nova Da Columbeira, Portugal, Milena M. Carvalho
Rabbit Exploitation In The Middle Paleolithic At Gruta Nova Da Columbeira, Portugal, Milena M. Carvalho
Anthropology Graduate Student Publications
Differences in subsistence between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans may suggest key behavioral changes during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. In this paper, I present archeozoological and stable isotopic analyses of Oryctolagus cuniculus (European wild rabbit) remains from levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 of Gruta Nova da Columbeira, a Mousterian cave site located in central Portugal. I use these data to explore two alternative hypotheses: 1. Anatomically modern humans gained a competitive advantage over Neanderthals by exploiting a broader-spectrum diet including small prey items such as the rabbit and 2. Neanderthals already on occasion practiced a broad-spectrum diet …

Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program
This information is collected and made available for use in models (specifically Upper Rio Grande Water Operations Model [URGWOM] maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers), habitat queries (specifically silvery minnow habitat by the US Fish and Wildlife Service), etc. for resource managers, other interested organizations, educators, individual citizens and policy makers. Also, this is quality‐controlled data with which students can compare their field measurements of water quality

Changes In Balance And Joint Position Sense During A 12-Day High Altitude Trek: The British Services Dhaulagiri Medical Research Expedition, Sarah B. Clarke
Changes In Balance And Joint Position Sense During A 12-Day High Altitude Trek: The British Services Dhaulagiri Medical Research Expedition, Sarah B. Clarke
Datasets
Postural control and joint position sense are essential for safely undertaking leisure and professional activities, particularly at high altitude. We tested whether exposure to a 12-day trek with a gradual ascent to high altitude impairs postural control and joint position sense. This was a repeated measures observational study of 12 military service personnel (28±4 years). Postural control (sway velocity measured by a portable force platform) during standing balance, a Sharpened Romberg Test and knee joint position sense were measured, in England (113m), and at 3 research camps (3619m, 4600m and 5140m) on a 12-day high altitude trek in the Dhaulagiri …

Comparing Estimates Of Size-At-Maturity And Maximum Body Size Made By Fishers And Scientists As Indicators Of Potential Overfishing, Elizabeth Layli Mclean, Graham E. Forrester
Comparing Estimates Of Size-At-Maturity And Maximum Body Size Made By Fishers And Scientists As Indicators Of Potential Overfishing, Elizabeth Layli Mclean, Graham E. Forrester
Marine Affairs Data Sets
We tested whether fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) of two fish life-history parameters, size-at-maturity (SAM) at maximum body size (MS), was comparable to scientific estimates (SEK) of the same parameters, and whether LEK influenced fishers’ perceptions of sustainability. Local ecological knowledge was documented for 82 fishers from a small-scale fishery in Samaná Bay, Dominican Republic, whereas SEK was compiled from the scientific literature. Size-at-maturity estimates derived from LEK and SEK overlapped for most of the 15 commonly harvested species (10 of 15). In contrast, fishers’ maximum size estimates were usually lower than (8 species), or overlapped with (5 species) scientific …

Appendix 1. Descriptions of lizard display.
This appendix provides the descriptions of display data for each lizard genus, compiled from a search of the primary scientific literature. Posture and motion displays components were categorized as types of postural changes, head movements, mouth displays, gular displays, limb movements, and tail movements. An “x” in a cell indicates that at least one species in that genus has been reported to use a given posture or motion in its display. Color displays were categorized by the body location of the color involved in display, with each color reported to be involved in at …

"Distribution Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In Northern California" Appendix, Cara L. Appel, William J. Zielinski, Frederick V. Schlexer, Richard Callas, Tim Bean
Research Data Sets
Western Wildlife 4:17–28, 2017: The North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is one of the most widely distributed mammals in North America, but recent reports have suggested declines in parts of its range in the West. In California, we know little about porcupines’ historical or current status; maps of porcupine distribution conflict considerably. Nevertheless, the species is of interest to natural resource managers. For much of the 1900s, foresters and others primarily treated porcupines as pests because of the undesirable damage they inflict by feeding on trees and gnawing on manmade items in search of salt. More recently, porcupines …

Research Datasets
The database compiles published data (in Arias-Ortiz et al., 2018) on biogeochemical characteristics (density, organic carbon, stable carbon isotopes and sediment grain size) of soils underneath seagrass meadows in Shark Bay, Western Australia. Pb-210 concentrations of the first 20 cm are included along with C-14 raw ages. The dataset compiles data for a total of 49 cores, 25 - 300 cm-long (11 cores with Pb-210 and C-14 data). Enquiries about the dataset may be sent to Ariane Arias-Ortiz: ariane.arias@uab.cat
