An Electronic Medical Record Marker For Delirium In Hospitalized Elderly, John Lung, Ariba Khan, Kanwardeep Singh, Michael L. Malone, Maharaj Singh

Ariba Khan, MD, MPH

Background/Significance: Delirium is an acute confusional state that is common among hospitalized elderly and is associated with poor outcomes. This syndrome requires prompt recognition and evaluation as the underlying medical condition may be life threatening. The diagnosis of delirium is made clinically and is often under-recognized.

“Acute Care for the Elders (ACE) Tracker” is an innovative automated checklist that is generated from the electronic medical record (EMR). The diagnosis of delirium is noted on ACE Tracker as being present or absent. This diagnosis is obtained from data already entered in the EMR by nurses and may be used at the …

Neonatal Circumcision Model And Competency Evaluation For Family Medicine Residents, John R. Brill, Brian K. Wallace Jun 2016

Neonatal Circumcision Model And Competency Evaluation For Family Medicine Residents, John R. Brill, Brian K. Wallace

John R. Brill, MD, MPH

Neonatal circumcision is one of the most common procedures performed by family physicians and is a recommended procedure for resident training. Few models or simulators exist. A model of neonatal genitalia was constructed using a cocktail wiener covered by a surgical glove finger. A competency checklist was used to review the steps of the procedure. Posttest/pretest-posttest assessment found significant improvement in knowledge and comfort in three groups of learners. Ninety percent of participants were deemed competent in all 15 areas of the checklist. The easily replicable model was felt to reasonably model the neonatal genitalia for circumcision training.

Immigration, Employment Opportunities, And Criminal Behavior, Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens, Sarah Bohn Jun 2016

Immigration, Employment Opportunities, And Criminal Behavior, Matthew Freedman, Emily Owens, Sarah Bohn

Matthew Freedman

We take advantage of provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), which granted legal resident status to long-time unauthorized residents but created new obstacles to employment for more recent immigrants, to explore how employment opportunities affect criminal behavior. Exploiting administrative data on the criminal justice involvement of individuals in San Antonio, Texas and using a triple-differences strategy, we find evidence of an increase in felony charges filed against residents most likely to be affected by IRCA’s employment regulations. Our results suggest a strong relationship between access to legal jobs and criminal behavior.

Social Work Practice With Men At Risk, Rich Furman Jun 2016

Social Work Practice With Men At Risk, Rich Furman

Rich Furman

Treating men as a culturally distinct group, Rich Furman integrates key conceptions of masculinity into culturally sensitive social work practice with men. Focusing on veterans, displaced workers, substance abusers, mental health consumers, and other groups that might be unlikely to seek help, Furman deftly explores the psychosocial development of men, along with the globalization of men's lives, alternative conceptions of masculinity, and special dynamics within male relationships.

Furman bolsters his conclusions with case studies and evidence-based interventions. His cutting-edge research merges four key social work theories and explores how they inform practice with mental health issues, compulsive disorders, addiction, and …

The Ilo And The Regulation Of White Lead In Britain During The Interwar Years: An Examination Of International And National Campaigns In Occupational Health, John Alfred Heitmann Jun 2016

The Ilo And The Regulation Of White Lead In Britain During The Interwar Years: An Examination Of International And National Campaigns In Occupational Health, John Alfred Heitmann

John A. Heitmann

Despite the International Labour Organization's (ILO) significance for much of the twentieth century, little has been written on its early history. This case study examines the thin tightrope that the ILO had to walk in balancing the needs and demands of government, employers and labor related to the ILO's Convention No. 13 (1921), "White Lead in Painting.' Great Britain was a leading producer of the pigment white lead prior to the First World War. A government investigation was published in 1915, but measures were shelved during the War. With the peace, the focus of activity shifted to the ILO.

Review: 'The Science Of Describing: Natural History In Renaissance Europe', John Alfred Heitmann Jun 2016

Review: 'The Science Of Describing: Natural History In Renaissance Europe', John Alfred Heitmann

John A. Heitmann

The author of this book has written a beautifully crafted monograph on Renais- sance natural history. This is a learned, scholarly, and analytical work that goes well beyond surveys in the history of science or Renaissance history, yet at the same time is eminently readable and at times rather entertaining, no mean feat when considering the subject matter. Where else can one learn of the early natural history of the walrus and the bird of paradise? For this reviewer, who gained an extensive background in the history of Renaissance science while in graduate school long ago, but then moved on …

Doing 'True Science': The Early History Of The 'Institutum Divi Thomae,' 1935-1951, John Alfred Heitmann

John A. Heitmann

This essay focuses on the origins and early history of the Institutum Divi Thomae (hereafter referred to as the IDT or Institutum), thus describing one particularly rich episode illustrating the relationship between American Catholicism and science during the middle of the twentieth century. The IDT was established by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 1935; its faculty and students, while working in the area of cancer research, published hundreds of scientific and technical papers, developed a number of commercial products, and received considerable publicity in both the religious and secular press during the first two decades of its existence. However, with …

Review: 'Sloss Furnaces And The Rise Of The Birmingham District: An Industrial Epic', John Alfred Heitmann Jun 2016

Review: 'Sloss Furnaces And The Rise Of The Birmingham District: An Industrial Epic', John Alfred Heitmann

John A. Heitmann

Ask a displaced Alabamian (as I did) about their memories of Birmingham, and chances are the first words uttered go something like "dirty, sooty, and poor." During the second half of the twentieth century life rarely got better, as Birmingham was left behind while neighboring Atlanta's reputation, and population, waxed greatly. In short, Birmingham in our time emerged with a rust-belt image, despite its being geographically situated well within the sunbelt, and with its sense of place being negatively attenuated further by the accumulation. of generations of racial injustice. How did Birmingham get that way?

Race, Language, And Ability: Deconstructing, Reconstructing, And Transcending Borders Of Normal, Brooke Prichard, Subini A. Annamma, Amy L. Boele, Janette Klingner

Amy Boele

This commentary explores how conceptions of "normal" have been constructed around issues of race, language, and ability. By combining three theoretical frameworks, Critical Race Theory, Cultural Historical Activity Theory, and Disability Studies, the authors attempt to deconstruct, reconstruct, and transcend the perceived borders of normal.

Enduring Issues in Special Education is aimed at any course in the undergraduate or graduate special education curriculum that is wholly or partly devoted to a critical examination of current issues in special education. The book organizes 28 chapters into seven sections using familiar structuring principles―what, who, where, how, when, why, and whither. Each section begins with an introduction that provides historical, legal, and theoretical background information and organizing commentary for the chapters that follow. The book’s objective, in addition to informing readers about the issues, is to develop critical thinking skills in the context of special …

Collaborative Strategic Reading: Fostering Success For All, Subini A. Annamma, Amy Eppolito, Janette Klingner, Amy L. Boele, Alison Boardman, Stephanie J. Stillman-Spisak

Amy Boele

The authors interviewed 17 middle school reading and language arts teachers as part of a larger study on an evidence-based intervention called Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). CSR is a multi-component reading instructional model combined with cooperative grouping and peer discussion. We show from the teacher interviews that CSR has benefits for all middle school students, especially those historically at risk for school failure, including English Language Learners, struggling learners, and students designated with a special education label. The teachers' perceived benefits for these students included additional oral language exposure for ELLs through interaction with peers, access to different levels of …

Challenging The Idea Of Normal In Schools, Subini A. Annamma, Amy L. Boele, Brooke A. Moore, Janette Klingner May 2016

Challenging The Idea Of Normal In Schools, Subini A. Annamma, Amy L. Boele, Brooke A. Moore, Janette Klingner

Amy Boele

In this article, we build on Brantlinger's work to critique the binary of normal and abnormal applied in US schools that create inequities in education. Operating from a critical perspective, we draw from Critical Race Theory, Disability Studies in Education, and Cultural/Historical Activity Theory to build a conceptual framework for examining the prevailing ideology of normal found in US schools. We use our conceptual framework todeconstruct the current, westernised, static ideology of normal. Once deconstructed, we explore current iterations of the ideology of normal in schools. Finally, we suggest using the conceptual framework as a tool to reconstruct the …

The Interconnectedness Of Relational And Content Dimensions Of Quality Instruction: Supportive Teacher-Student Relationships In Urban Elementary Mathematics Classrooms, Dan Battey, Rebecca A. Neal, Luis Leyva, Karlyn Adams-Wiggins May 2016

The Interconnectedness Of Relational And Content Dimensions Of Quality Instruction: Supportive Teacher-Student Relationships In Urban Elementary Mathematics Classrooms, Dan Battey, Rebecca A. Neal, Luis Leyva, Karlyn Adams-Wiggins

Rebecca Neal

Scholars assert that the often-impoverished instructional practices found in urban schools are tied to teachers’ negative relationships with African American and Latiná1 students (Ferguson, 1998; McKown & Weinstein, 2002; McKown & Weinstein, 2008; Morris, 2005; Stiff & Harvey, 1988). However, measures of mathematics instructional quality rarely measure relational elements of instruction. This study responds to such shortcomings by analyzing relational interactions in urban elementary mathematics classrooms in tandem with content instruction of teachers who engage in supportive relationships with African American and Latiná students. This study identified teachers with high quality student performance, content instruction, and supportive …
