On the University of Texas at Arlington campus, investing in green infrastructure is critical for managing stormwater and heat stress today and addressing the emerging challenges caused by a changing climate: shifting precipitation patterns, “cloudbursts” or flash floods, and more frequent and severe extreme heat events. In 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provided technical assistance to UTA as part of the tenth anniversary of the Campus RainWorks Challenge, a national design competition that advances green infrastructure design on college and university campuses across the country. This report builds on UTA’s extensive engagement with the competition and envisions the campus …

How An Environmental Crisis Catalyzed Community-Led Planning To Address Racial Inequities: A Case Study Of Shingle Mountain, In Southern Dallas, Evelyn Mayo

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Equity is one of the “Four E’s” representing the core values for planning at the City of Dallas, Texas (City of Dallas, Core Values). However, many neighborhoods in Southern Dallas endure environmental injustices partly because land use planning ignores or disregards the needs of low-income communities of color. This report examines the Shingle Mountain environmental justice crisis in Southern Dallas to illuminate the environmental injustices that the community of Floral Farms has endured partly due to misguided planning and the neglect of the city of Dallas. The study focuses on examining how the grassroots, community-led land use plan developed by residents …

Gambian Transnationalism And Urban Spatial Expansion: An Analysis Of Motivations And Consequences Of Us-Based Gambian Emigrants' Real Estate Investments In The Greater Banjul Area, Matthias St. Clair Greywoode

Planning Dissertations

This study was the first comprehensive study of the transnational housing investments of Gambian emigrants in the Gambia and contributes to the literature on immigrant populations in host countries by illuminating the transnational nature and activities of immigrant populations. Transnational migrants send significant amounts of remittances back to their countries of origin annually and research indicates that they continue to grow both in real terms and as a proportion of their country's respective GDP. Most of these migrant remittances are invested in residential housing developments which makes studying the impact of migrant investments on the economies of origin countries an …

Evaluating Usage, Acceptance, Integration, And Safety Impacts Of Demand Responsive Transportation (Drt) Services, Muhammad Arif Khan Jan 2022

Evaluating Usage, Acceptance, Integration, And Safety Impacts Of Demand Responsive Transportation (Drt) Services, Muhammad Arif Khan

Planning Dissertations

Transportation systems are vital in providing accessibility and mobility to city residents. Auto-oriented transportation systems have faced several challenges, including traffic congestion, crashes, and environmental pollution. Proponents of mass transit systems present them as a sustainable alternative to private automobiles. Although mass transit offers several benefits, these benefits are not very significant in rural, midsized, and low-density cities due to low public transit ridership. New modes of public transit, such as demand-responsive transport (DRT), also called on-demand public transport, have recently gained popularity across the United States. DRT systems are used in several mid-sized cities, either as an alternative to …

The Relationship Between Transit-Oriented Development (Tod) Stations And Health Outcomes, Mohammed Hafiz

Planning Dissertations

The relationship between the built environment and health outcomes, including obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and heart diseases, has been significantly related (Chandrabose et al., 2019). Urban planning plays a significant role in shaping the built environment of cities that are affecting public health. Historically, urban planning and public health are connected due to the impact of the built environment. Consequently, the concerns about health outcomes became an issue in urban planning. This research focuses on health outcomes within the built environment. Specifically, considering more physical activities in Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) station areas, the study investigates its …

Neoliberal Park Governance Regimes And The Right To The City: A Critical Assessment Of Social Inclusion In Downtown Dallas Signature Parks, Nazanin Ghaffari Jan 2021

Neoliberal Park Governance Regimes And The Right To The City: A Critical Assessment Of Social Inclusion In Downtown Dallas Signature Parks, Nazanin Ghaffari

Planning Dissertations

Privatization has been frequently criticized for diminishing the inclusiveness of public space. This dissertation examines whether private signature parks are more exclusive than their public counterparts utilizing Lefebvre's right to the city, along with theories of public space privatization and governance. To better understand the influence of privatization on the social inclusiveness of public spaces, three publicly-accessible signature parks are deliberately selected in downtown Dallas, based on their ownership and management types: (1) publicly-owned, publicly-managed; (2) publicly-owned, privately-managed; and (3) privately-owned, privately-managed. The research methodology includes semi-structured interviews, in-situ participatory observation, and content analysis of official documents, local and social …

Building On Spatial Mismatch: A New Review Of Literature And An Example Case Study, Steven Matthew Reeves Dec 2020

Building On Spatial Mismatch: A New Review Of Literature And An Example Case Study, Steven Matthew Reeves

Planning Theses

Barriers to employment exist at different levels for minority groups, especially those that are residentially segregated. Many studies have examined these barriers, including a physical separation between the residential location and the available job opportunities since John Kain’s 1968 Spatial Mismatch Hypothesis. However, recent studies of modal mismatch, racial mismatch, and skill or language mismatch, have been identified with significant impact on accessible employment without being included in a comprehensive review of mismatch literature. This research provides an updated literature review of Spatial Mismatch. It also includes a case study of a little-studied region, Dallas – Fort Worth metropolitan area. …

Planning Practices For The Public Mental Health, Kaitlin A. Mcbride Dec 2019

Planning Practices For The Public Mental Health, Kaitlin A. Mcbride

Planning Theses

The rapid urbanization taking place in the 21st century poses its own unique set of public health concerns. In addition to changing lifestyles around the world, mental illness rates are higher in our cities. While the conversations surrounding public health usually focus on the physical, mental health has an equal impact on the overall wellbeing of individuals and populations. Just as the planning profession finds it crucial to be involved in efforts to improve the physical public health in cities, we must do the same for the public mental health. Like most professions, planning is guided by our theories. These …

Lost In Translation? Assessing The Intercultural Sensitivity Levels Of Planners In The Dallas- Fort Worth Area, Eihua Corinne Olivia Shaw

Planning Dissertations

The inclusion of minorities in the public participation process is one of the greatest challenges within the field of planning. However, the political structures around public participation make it difficult for practitioners to respond to the challenges and needs of an increasing number of cultural minority groups in urban regions. Scholars have advised planners to be more sensitive to the needs of minorities, but there are no tools in the planning field to evaluate cultural sensitivity in practice. This dissertation examines public participation related to intercultural sensitivity. In particular, this research adds to a better understanding of the role of …

Re-Imagining A Neighborhood Center: Completing Mixed-Use Streets In The Elmwood Neighborhood Utilizing Dallas' Complete Streets Design Manual, Shirley Jane Mathews, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Walkable neighborhoods with adjacent commercial centers have the ability to encourage mode shifts to walking, bicycling, or transit. Mode shifts from single-occupancy vehicles (SOV) to the destinations within a neighborhood center of Elmwood's size may result in approximately 3,000 SOV trip reductions per day (H-GAC, 2018). This study examines the Dallas Complete Streets Design Manual (2016) and applies the Dallas Complete Streets Vision to a 1,400 foot (.3 mile) segment of Edgefield Avenue, adapting the guidelines to Edgefield Avenue with site-specific consideration. It refers to the Dallas Complete Streets Design Guidelines in the development of a complete street proposal for …

Spatial Decision Support Systems Use In Peacekeeping And Stability Operations Analysis: Spatial Analysis For U.S. Army Civil Affairs Civil Information Management, Earnest R. Lloyd

Planning Dissertations

Becoming a core U.S. military mission in 2005, Stability Operations deals with the political, economic, social and structural resiliency of a county or region. It is conducted to support and develop a host nation's government, or to initiate governmental services in a non-governed area until the host nation can do so itself. Inherent in this is the provision of public goods, whether the military is the principal provider or to understand the relative public good provision levels within a given area. This understanding is known as situational awareness of the operational environment (OE), a significant issue for any military commander …

Transit, Walkability, And Economic Development In The 21st Century: Explorations From The U.S. Specialized High-Tech Zones, Pivotal Industries, And Innovative Small Businesses, Ahoura Zandiatashbar

Planning Dissertations

The economy in the 21st century has expanded the depth of creativity, speed, and flexibility in production, high-tech industry, and innovation. Hence, the new economic norm and high dependency on innovation and creativity require educated, talented, and specialized human capital, as well as proximity to research centers and universities. Furthermore, this new knowledge economy has also favored urban spaces that support spontaneous face-to-face encounters and knowledge exchange while appealing to the talented human capital. Besides these specific urban spaces, the transportation infrastructures could have a principle role in the new economy whether through fostering local, regional, or global accessibility to …

Decoding The Jolly Green Giant: An Analysis Of Green Gentrification In The Context Of Rails-To-Trails Policy, Lorin R. Carter May 2019

Decoding The Jolly Green Giant: An Analysis Of Green Gentrification In The Context Of Rails-To-Trails Policy, Lorin R. Carter

Planning Dissertations

Recent urban public policies and planning initiatives have resulted in increased efforts to improve stewardship of our limited natural resources (sustainability), increase defenses against natural stressors (resiliency), while also seeking to prevent and remedy unequal environmental burdens placed on minority, elderly, and lower-income communities (environmental justice). This research seeks first to evaluate how the intersection of these policies combine to create the urban phenomenon of Green Gentrification, where the intended effect of these actions is to improve environmental characteristics and infrastructure, but they often result in the displacement of original citizens and culture the improvement sought to help (Gould & …

The conceptual framework for this research builds on Manuel Castells's work to find the specific network configuration of actors, interests, and values that engage in their power-making strategies to operationalize a communication network and understand the roles and powers of programmers and switchers at a local level. The study explores the role and purpose of communication networks within cities from the perspective of administrators and elected officials and their responsibility to provide communication as a public good. The research design is an organizational autoethnography of the city of Dallas that incorporates various perspectives from those who were a part of …

Factors Affecting Transit Ridership And The Impact Of Intelligent Transit Information Systems (Itis) - Case Study Of Dallas Area Rapid Transit (Dart), Ahmed Ismail Daqrouq Dec 2018

Factors Affecting Transit Ridership And The Impact Of Intelligent Transit Information Systems (Itis) - Case Study Of Dallas Area Rapid Transit (Dart), Ahmed Ismail Daqrouq

Planning Dissertations

Transit ridership is at the heart of transportation policy making and the success of any transit system. Urban planners have been focusing on the need to reduce car dependence and promote more sustainable transportation alternatives. Automobile dependence is a concern for many reasons including congestion in urban areas, pollution, and environmental damages. Switching to more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation modes such as public transit is likely to be an effective solution to most of these problems. As an alternative to the private car, public transit is an effective means to move large numbers of people within cities, and transit …

Assessment Of Development Potential: Grand Prairie's Entertainment District Area, Eric Ojeda, Ardeshir Anjomani Aug 2018

Assessment Of Development Potential: Grand Prairie's Entertainment District Area, Eric Ojeda, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Grand Prairie is growing in population and development, and one of its most identifiable locations, the Entertainment District is at its center. There are multiple amenities located with the Entertainment District such as a concert venue, a horse racing track, and minor league baseball team. However, these amenities do little to keep visitors beyond the time of the scheduled event. Located at the Belt-Line and I-30 intersection, Grand Prairie Entertainment District has the potential to be a premier regional attraction, but more must be done to enhance and unite the amenities within the area. The goal of this project is …

Exploring The Effects Of Socio-Demographic And Built Environmental Factors On The Public Adoption Of Shared And Private Autonomous Vehicles : A Case Study Of Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, Hamid Hajjafari Aug 2018

Exploring The Effects Of Socio-Demographic And Built Environmental Factors On The Public Adoption Of Shared And Private Autonomous Vehicles : A Case Study Of Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, Hamid Hajjafari

Planning Dissertations

Although the self-driving technology promises to solve several urban issues, the deployment of the autonomous vehicles (AV) is an evolutionary process that depends on different factors. One of these factors is the public adoption of AVs that plays a crucial role in the deployment of this technology by controlling the level of market penetration. By analyzing the cross-national survey studies on AVs acceptance, the author finds that the rate of AVs adoption in America is considerably lower than other developed countries. Although some studies have focused on the AVs adoption in the US and the factors that affect it, there …

Decentering Neo-Bohemia In The Creative City: Cultural Marginalization, Economic Violence, And An Alternative Agenda Of Diverse Cultural Scenes, James Murdoch May 2018

Decentering Neo-Bohemia In The Creative City: Cultural Marginalization, Economic Violence, And An Alternative Agenda Of Diverse Cultural Scenes, James Murdoch

Planning Dissertations

Creative cities policy is an approach that advocates the planned development of consumption-oriented, mixed-use urban neighborhoods supporting artistic activity and a vibrant nightlife to create economic benefits. The literature labels these neighborhoods 'neo-bohemia' because they combine the gritty, authentic lifestyle of bohemian artists with a contemporary consumption culture of cafes, bars, galleries, and other arts spaces. Many, however, critique creative cities policy, suggesting it leads to gentrification and neighborhood commodification, and ignores the economic and cultural value of places that are not neo-bohemian. I apply the critical theory of J.K. Gibson-Graham (2006) to decenter the concept of neo-bohemia in the …

Affordable Housing For Senior Adults, Athena Seaton, Ardeshir Anjomani Dec 2017

Affordable Housing For Senior Adults, Athena Seaton, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Despite the fact that America is aging, the trend for many cities is to appeal to the Millennial (born between 1977 and 1995) and Generation X (born between 1965 and 1976) populations. Most literature in planning and urban development has focused on appealing to the upcoming generation of young professionals who prefer public transportation and living downtown in walkable communities. New building construction is expanding though new rental housing is mostly targeted toward those with higher incomes, affordable housing is not increasing to the same degree. Consequently, the realization of the growing need for affordable housing for senior adults has …

This report will create a plan using tactical urbanism to revitalize downtown Grand Prairie.

Navigating Through Sex Business Regulation: A Case Study Of Crime Statistics, Kristina Marie Heredia, Enid Arvidson Aug 2017

Navigating Through Sex Business Regulation: A Case Study Of Crime Statistics, Kristina Marie Heredia, Enid Arvidson

Planning Masters Professional Reports

The world of sex business regulation can be muddled and confusing. In the past, cities banned sexually-oriented businesses (SOBs) on the basis that they were morally bankrupt and obscene. Courts have ruled that the First Amendment bars cities from regulating these businesses based on the content of the business, and therefore cities have found a way to regulate SOBs based on real or perceived negative effects that SOBs bring to the surrounding community. These negative effects are called secondary effects and their existence has been recently called into question. This report goes over the history of SOB regulations, studies that …

Factors Making A Street A Vibrant Place: Comparing Street Users’ Vibrancy Perception Between Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas, Usa And Inonu Boulevard, Sivas, Turkey, Bilal Caliskan Aug 2017

Factors Making A Street A Vibrant Place: Comparing Street Users’ Vibrancy Perception Between Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas, Usa And Inonu Boulevard, Sivas, Turkey, Bilal Caliskan

Planning Theses

Streets are one of the most vital parts of cities not only because they serve urban transportation, but also because they are critical elements of the public realm that people use to go to meet daily needs and interact with others. However, modernist urban planning has often ignored the role of streets as a public space and as starting point for public life because of the increasing number of vehicles on roads, rapid urbanization (urban sprawl) and growing demand for the single family home and the gated community concept. In the last few decades, urban planning has recognized that urban …

A Nearest Neighboring Match Analysis Of The Proximate Principle: The Relationship Between Residential Property Values And Parks In Arlington, Texas, Bryan Isham Aug 2017

A Nearest Neighboring Match Analysis Of The Proximate Principle: The Relationship Between Residential Property Values And Parks In Arlington, Texas, Bryan Isham

Planning Theses

Most studies of this type use a hedonic value method of analysis while using spatial analysis primarily as a tool in the analysis. The nearest neighboring match analysis used in this study uses spatial analysis as the primary method of measurement. Housing stock from Arlington, Texas from 2015 – 2016 is used to determine whether this type of analysis is effective in measuring the existence of the proximate principle. It proved difficult to obtain a large enough study group when attempting to include multiple different structural attributes. Ultimately, it was shown that a much larger timeframe may be needed in …

Downtown Revitalization Plan: City Of Commerce, Tx, Colby Collins, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Creating a downtown revitalization plan for the City of Commerce can be valuable for not only the residents of the city, but also the students of the University of Texas A&M - Commerce. Downtown revitalization can be considered the "hotbeds of business creativity, neighborhood activism, non-profit entrepreneurs, economic diversity, and an attraction for visitors, seniors, and young talent" (A Healthy Downtown is Key to a Strong Community, 2013). Though the City of Commerce has potential to grow and nourish as a community, the steps have yet to be taken to begin the revitalization process. With the average age for the …

The Cultural Advantage Of Cities: Exploring The Cultural Industry Agglomerations As A Source For Economic Growth, Mohamed A. Bireima May 2017

The Cultural Advantage Of Cities: Exploring The Cultural Industry Agglomerations As A Source For Economic Growth, Mohamed A. Bireima

Planning Dissertations

Interest in the cultural industries as a source for economic growth has risen to prominence in recent decades. The purpose of this research is to explore the role and contribution of the cultural industries for economic growth. The analytical framework is based on the agglomeration model, which links economic growth to the spatial organization of economic activity. The cultural industries exhibit a tendency to cluster in geographical space due to competitive pressures, which causes some degree of agglomeration economies to arise (Scott, 2004). The literature exploring the economic impacts of the cultural industries has focused on their agglomeration tendencies at …
