Improving As An Editor, Growing As A Historian: Analysis Of Primary Sources Through Digital Edition, Carol Lynne Hemmingway

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

While digital humanists have often discussed how digital editing develops students’ abilities to read closely and analyze sources, historians adjacent to the discipline have underexamined the benefits of the practice on their own students. This article seeks to provide a perspective supporting the existence of such benefits for history students. It examines an application of ideas regarding the use of digital documentary editing to train students as historians. Using my own experience as a student editor and historian, I argue that digital editing especially facilitates close reading which, in turn, enables highly specified primary source analysis. To accomplish this, I …

Nashville Trail Of Tears Museum, Emily Schiedemeyer Oct 2022

Nashville Trail Of Tears Museum, Emily Schiedemeyer

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Architecture is the manifestation of artistic expression which can serve as both a storytelling device and a mechanism to evoke an intentional emotional reaction of its occupants. The Nashville Trail of Tears Memorial is intended to reflect the story of the Cherokee nation and give visitors the opportunity to consider the horrific journeys taken. The Trail of Tears was the route taken by many Native Americans following the forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of their lands, leaving many dead and families separated. Native to the southern part of the Appalachian chain, the Cherokee tribe is the group of people that …

Stonewalls And Statues: A Personal Exploration Of Memorialization Culture Within The United States, Petra Mcdonnell-Ingoglia Oct 2022

Stonewalls And Statues: A Personal Exploration Of Memorialization Culture Within The United States, Petra Mcdonnell-Ingoglia

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

A personal exploration of Confederate memorials and the Lost Cause narrative. How and who has created these memorials is integral in understanding the rise of racial hatred and racial violence in the U.S., and is rooted in the creation of Confederate culture and memorialization. This paper explores those topics while also trying to reckon with where we go from here and how we unravel the mythical narrative that has had such an impact on our society.

Changing The Landscape: Creating A Memorial To The Enslaved At William & Mary, Jody L. Allen

Arts & Sciences Articles

Excerpt from publication: "In the 1930s, William & Mary (W&M) constructed a four-foot brick wall around the oldest section of the campus. Many people in Williamsburg’s Black community saw this wall as a reminder that they were not welcome on campus unless they “were pushing a broom.” On May 26, 2021, a portion of this wall was knocked down to make way for the memorial to the enslaved..."

The American Soldier: The Contested Existence Of The Continental Army, Alexander M. Remington Oct 2022

The American Soldier: The Contested Existence Of The Continental Army, Alexander M. Remington

Student Publications

In the modern United States, the military is respected and honored by the public and military leaders alike. However, during the American Revolution, society was not yet convinced that having a standing army was necessary or beneficial to the Republic. The Continental Army was heavily contested during the war and conflicted with the civilians and its commanders alike. This paper follows the trend of other social histories by investigating just how these conflicts played out and how the common soldier navigated them.

A Forgotten ‘Riot’: Discovering The Black Cat Tavern Raid’S Place In Queer History, Katelyn "Katie" Nash Oct 2022

A Forgotten ‘Riot’: Discovering The Black Cat Tavern Raid’S Place In Queer History, Katelyn "Katie" Nash

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The Black Cat Tavern Raid of 1967 has long been relegated to the footnotes of history, and, when it is remembered, it is portrayed as a riot similar to the one that occurred at the Stonewall Inn two years later. Using archival and contemporary sources, this article explores the events surrounding the raid and subsequent protest and places them within the greater context of the 1960s. In addition, I contextualize and analyze the legacy of these events, explore their often overlooked contributions to queer history, and conclude that, while they are often overshadowed by Stonewall, they still deserve to be …

Standing The Ground: The Crises Of The 1790s And The Philosophies Of The Federalist Papers, Maria Vostrizansky Oct 2022

Standing The Ground: The Crises Of The 1790s And The Philosophies Of The Federalist Papers, Maria Vostrizansky

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The paper provides a unique outlook on the Federalist Papers, a series of eighty- five essays published in 1788, written by John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison, as it examines the consistency of the philosophies and opinions presented in the Federalist Papers in light of the numerous crises the nation experienced in the 1790s. The paper compares the political belief presented in the Federalist Papers with the actions undertaken by authors during the Whiskey Tax’s enactment in 1791, the Genet Affair’s crisis of 1793, and the implementation of the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798. Looking at these testing …

The Downfall Of A President: The Media Coverage Of Richard Nixon’S Resignation, Ning Xi Oct 2022

The Downfall Of A President: The Media Coverage Of Richard Nixon’S Resignation, Ning Xi

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The Watergate Scandal stands out as being the first, and so-far only, event that was catastrophic and damming enough to force a sitting President of the United States to resign from office. The exceptional circumstances of Richard Nixon’s departure from presidency invites many questions regarding how Nixon deciding to resign was initially covered by the new media. An analysis of excerpts from newspaper editorials from a variety of places around the United States demonstrates that there was a strong consensus that resigning was the best and only thing Nixon could have done. Yet, wide support for Nixon’s resignation co-existed with …
