The development of technology to enhance the performance of the human body is motivated by the desire to go beyond the limitations of the physical form, creating new possibilities for bodily expression while also raising questions about the boundaries of the self and the impact of technology on the body and society. In this paper I will explore many of the techniques performing artists have used to merge their bodies with technology, and observe the questions asked and answered by those methods.

This research interrogates what it means to utilize escapism, transforming it from passive to active consumption, drawing strong ties between performance and social media. Through audience awareness and participation, this research aims to cultivate a social collective within performance viewing and social media. Framing escapism as a social collective experience resists contemporary notions suggesting that escapism is an individual experience. This work argues that social media and performance have become a space allowing for social collective awareness. Thus, escaping together is the only way to move forward.

Through design and technical work, the collaboration between the areas of Sound and Costume Design have been minimal. When these areas interact, it is usually for the small notes, like the shoes are too loud, or the jewelry is too much. However, in the following chapters I will propose a way to deepen the collaborative relationship between Sound and Costume through a prototype named the Sound Glove.The Sound Glove has been developed through researching previous products, researching for materials, constructing a budget, developing applications of the Sound glove and then creating a prototype. A majority of technology that we see on the state has been adapted from another field -- be it music, lighting, or construction -- to fit the production's specifics needs. This paper is a complete description of the set design process for the 2018 production of Bye Bye Birdie, as designed by Erin Wegleitner. The submission of this document will serve to meet partial fulfillment of Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre. The content of this thesis will detail the preproduction analysis, historical and critical analysis, process, post-production analysis and review of artistic development. This thesis examines the emerging phenomenon of sex robots from a feminist materialist perspective. I explore the current scholarly and popular debates on sex robots, and suggest a reading of sex robots in their machinic, literary and cinematic expressions to move beyond the moral-ethical impasse that seems to dominate sex robot discussions. Employing Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Myth” on a methodological and theoretical level, I argue for an interdisciplinary approach to studying sex robots, which proceeds carefully so as to avoid contributing to sex panic, and which thinks critically about what it might mean to assess sex robots from a feminist …

The relationship between performer and spectator is a constant topic in theatre since audiences are essential to any performance. Some contemporary performances strive to blur the line between the two by allowing audiences to participate during the show. Often, audience participation is despised and therefore avoided by spectators and theatre practitioners. However, Blue Man Group thrives on it due to their authentic character, adaptable narrative, and accessible space. What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …

Recent advances in sound technology have had significant implications for the teaching of voice and speech that are only now becoming apparent. As more students become “plugged in” it becomes more difficult, both for the instructor and the student, to communicate, let alone find a voice.
