In this complex modern world, reading is a medium of communication and a tool of learning that is an indispensable function in society (Tinker and McCullough, 1962) .

For many years the issues of reading disability were argued in terms of genetic as compared to environmental factors . In the light of research it is now known that the home produces a powerful impact upon the child's ability to learn and that social and cultural disadvantages can depress academic ability.

It was the purpose of this study to compare the test scores of one group of children who took the verbal ability section of the sixth grade School and College Ability Test (SCAT) with the test scores of the same group of children on the eighth grade reading Sequential Test of Educational Progress (STEP) and to determine the degree of relationship between the tests.

One purpose of this study was to compare a reading program taught using a basic reading text, supplemental books, and teacher motivation to a reading program designed as an independent, developmental, multi-level program that utilizes graphic and ego motivation. Another purpose was to find out if pupils in the program will show a significantly greater gain in reading achievement than do pupils in the other.

The purpose of this study was (1) to determine if a classroom teacher could effect an increase in interest in independent reading shown by an intermediate level class through an intensified program of stimulation as measured against the reading interests evidenced by a comparable class not receiving the extra stimulation, and (2) to determine to what extent if any this stimulation of reading interests affected reading ability as measured by a standardized reading achievement test.

It can be approached through a study of the teacher or of the pupil. The problem of this study is to show how the present methods of teaching reading in the public elementary schools of Albuquerque, New Mexico, have developed. It is proposed to try to trace the changes in aims, methods, and materials in the teaching of reading in these schools from their establishment in 1891 to the present time, 1947. The result should give the reader a story of the historical development of the teaching of reading in this particular school system.
