Understanding Prolepsis Through Teacher Research, Phillip White
Understanding Prolepsis Through Teacher Research, Phillip White
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
Most often teacher research is written in a linear narrative form, bringing the reader along the story line of discovery much as the researcher herself made her discoveries. I have chosen a different approach, one I'll label as recursive narrative. This narrative form follows my own thinking processes, reflexive, discursive, moving recursively from present to future to past and back again, attempting to create a circular whole that is evident at the end. This recursive narrative form is reflective of the shape of prolepsis itself, analyzing an activity while taking into account its historical form, its present form, and considering …

Assessing Indicators Of Early Reading Skills, Tammy M. Claypool
Assessing Indicators Of Early Reading Skills, Tammy M. Claypool
Masters Theses
Measures that assess pre-reading skills were examined. The measures included a typical informal kindergarten inventory for Initial Consonant Sound Identification, and Good's (1997) DIBELS measures that include: Letter Naming Fluency, Onset Recognition Fluency, and Phonemic Awareness Fluency. Participants included 50 kindergarten students from three different classrooms from two elementary school buildings in the same school district. Results demonstrated that the four measures were highly correlated with each other, and that the Onset Recognition Fluency measure best predicted the classroom teacher' predictions of at-risk students for reading difficulties. The four measures together were moderately to highly predictive of the teachers' ratings …
Do Or Die : A Survival Guide For New Teachers, Peggy A. Martin
Do Or Die : A Survival Guide For New Teachers, Peggy A. Martin
Graduate Research Papers
This article is written in an effort to help new middle school teachers with classroom management. Beginning teachers are well prepared in terms of curriculum, theology, and strategies, but until one actually experiences the myriad of personalities and situations in a classroom, there is little they can do except hang on for the ride. The author hopes to encourage new teachers to adopt attitudes which will foster a learning environment for students and create confidence in the teacher which will result in a classroom that is amicable and filled with students eager to learn.
Technology Staff Development : Key To Technology Integration, Joanne G. Dorhout
Technology Staff Development : Key To Technology Integration, Joanne G. Dorhout
Graduate Research Papers
This research paper will examine six areas. First, it will review several successful technology staff programs to support the concept that staff development does make an impact on the students' learning. Next, the principles that comprise a good staff development program will be examined, followed by an examination of the needs of an adult as a learner. Fourth, after. the teacher has acquired new skills, what insures the transfer of those skills into the classroom integrating technology into the curriculum? The concepts that research has found to be successful in the knowledge transfer will be examined. Fifth, to ensure the …

The Effects Of An Agricultural Literacy Treatment On Participating K-12 Teachers And Their Curricula, Mark A. Balschweid, Gregory K. Thompson, R L. Cole
The Effects Of An Agricultural Literacy Treatment On Participating K-12 Teachers And Their Curricula, Mark A. Balschweid, Gregory K. Thompson, R L. Cole
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
Oregon State University ‘s Summer Agriculture Institute (SAI) is an agricultural literacy program aimed at Oregon 3 non-agriculture K-I2 teachers. Since the debut of this program in 1998, no study has been conducted to determine SAI ‘s effectiveness with participating K-12 teachers. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which participating teachers used the material received at SAI in their curricula, and to determine teacher perceptions of the content, structure, and usability of the agricultural literacy program presentations and materials. Additionally, the study sought to iden@ existing barriers that prevented teachers from integrating agriculture into their …
The Making Of A Teacher: A Narrative Study Of The Impact Of An Extended Practicum On Preservice Teachers, Deborah Ingram
The Making Of A Teacher: A Narrative Study Of The Impact Of An Extended Practicum On Preservice Teachers, Deborah Ingram
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The extended practicum is a crucial learning experience for pre-service teachers. This study examines how pre-service teachers learn about teaching within the context of the extended practicum. Narrative methodology was chosen as an appropriate means to explore and interpret the beliefs and experiences of pre-service teachers for a wider audience while still preserving their voices. The pre-service teachers and I had a common agenda: to improve the experience of future preservice teachers on their extended practicum. Our approach to this differed. I wanted to focus on the pre-service teachers' learning about teaching so that future pre-service teachers could improve their …
Evaluating Action Research As A Model For School-Based Professional Development Of Secondary Mathematics Teachers In The Philippines, Florenda L. Gallos
Evaluating Action Research As A Model For School-Based Professional Development Of Secondary Mathematics Teachers In The Philippines, Florenda L. Gallos
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study documented a school-based professional development activity conducted in a secondary school in the Philippines where five secondary mathematics teachers and the head of the school participated in a program of action research. The effectiveness of action research as a form of professional development and the constraints in using this form of professional development in the Philippines were evaluated based on the changes on teachers in terms of pedagogical knowledge, practices and beliefs. Qualitative research techniques were used. The methodology included questionnaires, interviews, class observations and diaries. The results indicated that the involvement of the participants in the action …
Professional Development And Practice: A Study Of Early Childhood Teachers Of Mathematics, Wendy Hawthorne
Professional Development And Practice: A Study Of Early Childhood Teachers Of Mathematics, Wendy Hawthorne
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In the past twenty years there has been increased interest in the ways in which teachers construct their professional lives. It is no longer assumed that preservice education alone will enable teachers to meet the challenges of their teaching lives. Ongoing professional development is seen as an essential component of contemporary teachers' lives but remains a challenge for professional development planners and providers. The nature and extent of teachers' participation in professional development was a significant dimension of the investigation of professional development contained in this thesis. The research questions which formed the basis for the data collection in this …
Factors Associated With The Utilization Of Mathematics Manipulatives In Grades Kindergarten Through Four, Debra J. Bandy
Factors Associated With The Utilization Of Mathematics Manipulatives In Grades Kindergarten Through Four, Debra J. Bandy
Masters Theses
Since the publication of "Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics" by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1989, mathematics pedagogy has shifted from the standard memorization of facts and processes to concept development and application. Teachers have been encouraged to utilize manipulatives to help students bridge the gap between concrete and abstract mathematical concepts. This study was conducted to determine if grade level impacted the frequency with which manipulatives were used, to examine teacher perceptions of eleven factors associated with the frequency of utilization of math manipulatives, and to assess the perceived effect of teaching with manipulatives …
Internet In The Classroom, Nathan J. Aslinger
Internet In The Classroom, Nathan J. Aslinger
Masters Theses
Purpose of the Study
This study was conducted to determine the role of the Internet in Illinois high schools, how it is integrated into the business education curriculum, and the status of technology in these high schools. Most schools are "hooked up" and the teachers are usually trained through internal workshops. Some schools even have a specific "Internet" course. The following questions are the research questions used for this study:
1. What is the general status of the Internet in secondary schools as perceived by business teachers?
2. To what extent is the Internet being included in the secondary business …
