Ruinous Natures: The Approach Of Social Timespace, Thomas Frederick Bechtold
Ruinous Natures: The Approach Of Social Timespace, Thomas Frederick Bechtold
Doctoral Dissertations
This Dissertation advances across three areas: first, a theory of social timespace that borrows from critical social theories, post-ontological systems theory, and literary critique; second, it proposes a revisioning of sociological ‘methods’ by an historical reproachment: how sociology is a method among others for the study of society and culture, what are called variously the social sciences, and how sociology also has a method of its own developed in the work of the first sociological institutions in the United States, Germany, and France, that is parallel to linguistic structuralism in the same historical period and has mostly been advanced outside …

"A Show That Proves The Worst Monsters Are Real": Media And Social Media Impact On Criminal Trials And Post-Conviction Guilt As Perceived By Criminal Justice Students., Jennifer Leigh Patterson
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses
This study, using survey data collected in 2022, investigates how consuming true crime media, from media such as podcasts, influences fear and anxiety among criminal justice students. In addition, the relationship between viewing criminal trials in real time and forming opinions different from the sentencing juries is assessed. Results suggest that there is no significant relationship between the consumption of true crime media and fear or anxiety. Moreover, viewing criminal trials in real time does not have a signficant effect on the formation of opinons that differ from criminal juries. Limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.
Segmenting The Thin Blue Line: An Ethnographic Content Analysis Of Myth And Ritual In Contemporary U.S. Police Film, Alexandra Szmutko
Segmenting The Thin Blue Line: An Ethnographic Content Analysis Of Myth And Ritual In Contemporary U.S. Police Film, Alexandra Szmutko
Doctoral Dissertations
The continued ills of mass incarceration, combined with the more recent rash of police-caused killings of people of color, make it clear that the U.S. criminal justice system is experiencing a period of profound crisis related to policing. This dissertation aims to interrogate the cultural ideologies supporting the existing policing enterprise in the U.S. To do this, the study first examines the foundational myths that shape prevailing cultural perceptions of the police and their social role. Ethnographic content analysis methodology is then utilized to identify both the presence and the subversion of these myths and their attendant rituals in a …
How Does Increasing The Darkness Of A Plate Affect The Perception Of Both Bitter And Sweet Flavors?, Jessica Williams
How Does Increasing The Darkness Of A Plate Affect The Perception Of Both Bitter And Sweet Flavors?, Jessica Williams
Food Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Extrinsic cues like plate color have been shown to effect taste perception. Previous studies conducted show a consensus that plate colors can modulate taste perception (Piqueras-Fizman et al., 2012, Stewart & Gross, 2013). No studies, however, have investigated varying color hues and their effect on taste perception. This study aims to determine whether the change in the black to white ratio of plate color can affect consumer perception of sweetness or bitterness.
We presented a group of volunteers two different brownies on plates varying from 100% white to 0% white in 25% increments. A 30:70 male to female gender ratio …
Sneakerhead Culture: Consumers And Their Ecological Consciousness, Maria Cervantes
Sneakerhead Culture: Consumers And Their Ecological Consciousness, Maria Cervantes
Apparel Merchandising and Product Development Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis aims to investigate the unique subculture of “sneakerheads” and their buying behavior/attitudes, catering carefully to the Northwest Arkansas community and their small community. Sneakerhead culture has gained significant popularity in recent years, with decades of history to back up the phenomenon. Sneaker connoisseurs collect these glamourous, expensive, and rare footwear and are keepsakes of self-expression and identity formation. The study employs an ecological approach to their purchases and seeks to find whether retail and non-retail sneakerheads are conscious of their ecological footprint. The research methodology involves a questionnaire that is catered towards retail or non-retail employees based on …
Denim Quality Innovation And Theory, Simeon Smith
Denim Quality Innovation And Theory, Simeon Smith
Apparel Merchandising and Product Development Undergraduate Honors Theses
Quality and its place with consumers, primarily university students, is often ignored when shopping for clothing. The aim of this creative project and accompanied research is to help answer why that is. This is needed as the denim industry weighs heavily on being one of the textile and clothing industries’ worst polluters. The rise of scaled fashion now produces an excess of garments. The purpose of this study is to create a high-quality garment and supplement it with a survey, polling students about their knowledge of quality. The survey participants, who were university students in the apparel major, had experience …
Social Tourism In National Policy Documents In Turkey, Nail Hoscan, Erkan Turkseven
Social Tourism In National Policy Documents In Turkey, Nail Hoscan, Erkan Turkseven
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
This research aims to investigate the significance and function of social tourism within Turkey's national policy documents. Since the conceptual emergence of social tourism in the 1950s, there have been several cyclical developments, such as the rapid spread of mass tourism worldwide, changes in the approach of the social state, neoliberal economic transformations, and the emergence of sustainability perspectives. For countries that have established Social Tourism as a part of public policy, its benefits are strongly asserted, and social tourism is included in the scope of public planning. These developments have been influential in the preparation and implementation of Turkey's …

The Personality Profile Of 2024 Republican Presidential Contender Ron Desantis, Aubrey Immelman, Mikayla Santiago
Psychology Faculty Publications
This is a brief report of the results of an indirect psychodiagnostic assessment of the personality of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a contender for the Republican nomination in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.
Psychodiagnostically relevant data about DeSantis were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5.
The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the basis of interpretive guidelines …
Impact Of Subjective Cognitive Complaints On Mci Diagnostic Criteria In Alzheimer’S Disease, Rhiannon Rivas
Impact Of Subjective Cognitive Complaints On Mci Diagnostic Criteria In Alzheimer’S Disease, Rhiannon Rivas
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most commonly occurring neurodegenerative disease characterized by deficits in patient cognition. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is defined as an intermediate stage between cognitively normal (CN) and dementia in which the individual experiences some impairment but can function independently. Gold standard MCI criteria requires a subjective cognitive complaint (SCC) in which a patient acknowledges a decline in cognitive ability, however past findings on its validity as a measure of objective impairment have been inconsistent. Biomarkers found in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and indicative of neurodegeneration are also used to examine AD progression. Our study investigates if inclusion …
Predicting Covid-19 Risk Information-Seeking Behaviors In Relation To Food Purchasing Concerns, Taylor Ruth, Quisto Settle, Joy N. Rumble
Predicting Covid-19 Risk Information-Seeking Behaviors In Relation To Food Purchasing Concerns, Taylor Ruth, Quisto Settle, Joy N. Rumble
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
COVID-19 drastically altered the way consumers shopped for food as they had to adhere to recommendations for social distancing. However, the public has been divided across political parties in their assessment of the severity of COVID-19 and must filter through misinformation related to the pandemic to make informed choices for personal safety. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the influences on Oklahoma consumers’ risk information-seeking behaviors about COVID-19 within the context of risk perceptions while shopping for food. The Risk Information Seek and Processing (RISP) model and cultural cognition provided the framework for this study. An online …
Research Informed Guidelines For Couple And Relationship Education Programs With Arab American Immigrant Couples, Sarah Almalki, Lawrence Ganong
Research Informed Guidelines For Couple And Relationship Education Programs With Arab American Immigrant Couples, Sarah Almalki, Lawrence Ganong
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
In this paper, we review the characteristics of Arab immigrants and propose guidelines for couple and relationship education (CRE) programs with Arab immigrant couples. Arab immigrants are a heterogeneous group, yet they share common cultural characteristics and family values that are essential to understand when working with them. Generally, CRE programs with immigrated Arabs should be mindful of (1) strongly valued religious beliefs, (2) extended family as a primary source of support and marital problem-solving, (3) the tendency to follow gender-based roles and responsibilities, and (4) Arabic language and communication norms. Family educators and practitioners who work with recently immigrated …

Emerging research indicates that chronic illnesses exacerbated by obesity begin in childhood. While research continues to show that consumption of fruits and vegetables can lower rates of obesity, children in the United States often fall short of consuming the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. Youth nutrition education and cooking education programs have emerged as proven strategies for promoting youth consumption of fruit and vegetables, and other factors (e.g., nutrition knowledge, food-related behaviors, food preferences, attitude toward cooking, and cooking self-efficacy) that mediate youth consumption of fruits and vegetables. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the …

The traditional horse youth showed greater development of leadership, self-responsibility, decision-making, goal setting, and communication than the horseless youth. Roughly half of the participants in …
Understanding Associations Between Chronic Illness Identity, Psychological Flexibility, And Type 2 Diabetes Emotional, Behavioral, And Psychosocial Functioning., Valery Bodziony
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Illness identity, defined as the extent to which one integrates their illness into their sense of self, may be a key psychological factor to consider in overall adjustment to and management of Type 2 Diabetes. Emerging research suggests illness identity integration is associated with aspects of diabetes-specific functioning. Psychological flexibility has also been found to be associated with positive diabetes-specific functioning. This modifiable cognitive factor may play a role in the relationship between illness identity and diabetes-specific functioning. This study aims to examine associations between illness identity enrichment, illness identity rejection, psychological flexibility, and aspects of diabetes-functioning, including self-management …
Institutional Racism, Racial Trauma, And Mental Health In Bipoc Graduate Students And Professionals., Jody Zhong
Institutional Racism, Racial Trauma, And Mental Health In Bipoc Graduate Students And Professionals., Jody Zhong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While there is increasing mainstream focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) amongst U.S. college campuses, institutional racism and everyday racist events continue to be common experiences for Black/Brown, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students (Bartz, 2019; Noltemeyer et al., 2012; Pieterse et al., 2010; Regis, 2016; Vaishnav, 2020). Research has shown that subtle, everyday racist slights, known as microaggressions, can have a substantial effect on the mental health and functioning of BIPOC, leading to the development of posttraumatic stress and to negative impacts on psychological well-being (Abdullah et al., 2021; Le et al., 2021; Lui & Quezada, 2019; …
Interactive Computer-Based Simulations As Exploratory Learning Activities., Derek Mcclellan
Interactive Computer-Based Simulations As Exploratory Learning Activities., Derek Mcclellan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Typical college lectures follow a direct instruction framework, where instructors deliver a lecture, followed by an activity. Exploratory learning flips this routine by providing students with an activity prior to instruction. Research suggests that this inversion benefits students’ conceptual understanding and ability to transfer their knowledge. The majority of exploratory learning tasks in the literature are problem-solving activities. The current work investigates the use of computer-based simulations during exploratory learning, and whether manipulating the cognitive load of the activity impacts learning. In Experiment 1, undergraduate students (N=66) were randomly assigned to explore a simulation-based circuit construction activity prior …
False Memories Are Impacted By Semantic Pairing Of Drm Lists., Ryan Coleman
False Memories Are Impacted By Semantic Pairing Of Drm Lists., Ryan Coleman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the DRM paradigm, experience of semantically related words leads to false memories of related words called critical lures. These false memories serve as evidence that the relationship between items in a DRM list contribute to an overall gist or central concept for the experience. The present studies aim to investigate whether the higher-order semantic relationship that exists between different DRM lists can also influence recognition memory. Study 1 compared memory confidence ratings for list items and critical lures to two metrics: “Temporal Contiguity”, how closely in time lists appeared to each other at encoding, and “Semantic Distance”, the semantic …
From Androgyny To Binary And Back: A Qualitative Analysis Of Nonbinary Tiktoks., Savannah Hatton
From Androgyny To Binary And Back: A Qualitative Analysis Of Nonbinary Tiktoks., Savannah Hatton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores how nonbinary individuals represent and express their gender on TikTok. Given the limited amount of research that has been done on nonbinary gender expression in online spaces, this study uses TikTok to observe the ways that nonbinary individuals perform gender. Additionally, given the relative newness of TikTok, this study serves to inform growing research on identity formation through social media. It used a sample of fifty TikToks by nonbinary creators to perform a content analysis. The findings reveal significant variation in how nonbinary individuals "do gender" on the platform, with some individuals identifying closely with binary labels, …

Findings could not support hypothesized differences in first-generation status. …
Chinese International Graduate Student Agency In A Neo-Racism Context: A Narrative Analysis, Minghui Hou
Chinese International Graduate Student Agency In A Neo-Racism Context: A Narrative Analysis, Minghui Hou
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
The United States is the top destination for Chinese international students, receiving around 372,532 students from China from the academic year 2019 to 2020. The host institutions and countries have benefited from economic gains, diverse cultures, global competence, and human capital. The motivation of recruiting international students is framed in a global imaginary that is embedded in colonialism and neoliberalism. International students are often framed as cash cows and objects. Meanwhile, international students, particularly Chinese international students have been experiencing discrimination, prejudice, and exclusion due to their nationality and culture. The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to examine …
A Comparative Study Of Vinti-Based Orbit Propagation And Estimation For Cubesats In Very Low Earth Orbits, Ethan Michael Senecal
A Comparative Study Of Vinti-Based Orbit Propagation And Estimation For Cubesats In Very Low Earth Orbits, Ethan Michael Senecal
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in CubeSats and very low Earth orbit (VLEO) space missions. Mission SeaLion, a collaborative CubeSat mission between Old Dominion University, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology, planned to launch a 3U CubeSat into VLEO. The VLEO mission is a particularly challenging environment for navigation and orbit propagation because drag introduces a significant perturbation for orbit models such as SGP4. Additionally, mission requirements left no capacity for attitude determination or control, further reducing knowledge of drag behavior of the satellite in flight. This deficiency is a …

One Step At A Time; Union Organizing In The Public Sector South, Daniel Urquieta
Masters Theses
In October of 2000, a coalition of students and workers started a public sector labor union for higher education employees known as United Campus Workers at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. As a public sector union in Tennessee, United Campus Workers lacks the right to collectively bargain. By conducting interviews with union-related personnel and reflecting on my own time as a member, this paper explains the way the labor union has still won campaigns for higher pay and policy changes at UT-Knoxville within its legal context, and what union members and staff organizers make of their experiences. I conclude …

Control Of Pausing In Rich-Lean Transitions By Spatially Localized And Spatially Diffuse Stimuli, Carson S. Yahrmarkt
Control Of Pausing In Rich-Lean Transitions By Spatially Localized And Spatially Diffuse Stimuli, Carson S. Yahrmarkt
All NMU Master's Theses
Signaled transitions from rich (favorable) to lean (less favorable) schedules of reinforcement (i.e., rich-lean transitions) can disrupt operant behavior. Previous literature suggests that disruptions in these transitions could occur because individuals engage in other behavior that reduces contact with the schedule-correlated stimuli. My thesis project evaluated this possibility by using different stimuli to manipulate the ease by which rats could reduce contact with schedule-correlated stimuli during signaled rich-lean transitions. We arranged a two-component multiple fixed ratio-fixed ratio (FR-FR) schedule to evaluate effects of different types of schedule-correlated stimuli on pausing in rich-lean transitions using rat subjects. Components had equivalent FR …

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper investigates the effect of COVID-19 uncertainty on corporate default risk using an international sample of firms from 71 countries. We document that corporate default risk increases with higher COVID-19 uncertainty, even after controlling for a wide range of firmlevel and country-level characteristics. The effect is weaker for firms in highly religious adherence countries, stronger for firms in developed countries, and for firms geographically closer to China and Italy. Further, the effect is weaker for highly innovative firms and less financially constrained firms. Our findings are robust to propensity score matching and entropy balancing methods to address selection bias, …
Enhancing Depression Screening And Treatment For Latinxs Residing In The U.S., Linda Esperanza Guzman
Enhancing Depression Screening And Treatment For Latinxs Residing In The U.S., Linda Esperanza Guzman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: In the U.S., Latinxs with Spanish as their preferred language encounter two prominent structural barriers impacting access to treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD). The first is that MDD symptoms commonly go undetected in Latinxs with Spanish compared to English as their preferred language. This might be perhaps because commonly used MDD screeners lack somatic symptom survey items culturally specific in how MDD may present among Latinxs with Spanish as their preferred language. The second structural barrier is that treatment access and completion rates are lower in Spanish-speaking than English-speaking Latinxs, perhaps due to treatments lacking the structure and …
Constitutional Tension: The Role Of Framing, Regulatory Focus, And Anticipated Emotion When Establishment And Free Exercise Norms Collide, Katherine Kimble
Constitutional Tension: The Role Of Framing, Regulatory Focus, And Anticipated Emotion When Establishment And Free Exercise Norms Collide, Katherine Kimble
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The conflict between establishment and free exercise norms regularly litters the media, particularly when religion is involved in areas of public life, such as schools, meetings, and displays on public property. Although the conflict is inherently psychological, no psychological research has yet delved into the issue. This dissertation reports on four studies that apply prospect theory, regulatory focus theory, and affective forecasting to explore the ways in which lay people perceive the establishment–free exercise tension. Prospect theory and regulatory focus theory offer competing hypotheses regarding the consideration of gains and losses related to each right and affective forecasting theory qualifies …
A Thematic Analysis Exploring The Narratives Of Growing Up As A Second-Generation Survivor Of The 1994 Genocide Against The Tutsi In Rwanda And The Presence Of Generative Commitment, Victor Mpore
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Scholarship
The scientific analysis of narratives from survivors of a genocide like the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi has provided an understanding on the survivors experiences during and after the genocide. Most narrative research on the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi has however primarily focused on the survivors and not their children. This study focuses on the second-generation survivors as a significant portion of the Rwandan population was born after the genocide. Drawing on the narrative approach, this study thematically analyzed narratives the second-generation survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi have about: a) their childhood and young adulthood in …
