Sa/Fe Program: A Rural Health Care Response To Sexual Assault, Sheri Arnett
Sa/Fe Program: A Rural Health Care Response To Sexual Assault, Sheri Arnett
Theses and Graduate Projects
Governor Arnie Carlson's Minnesota Task Force on Violence found that health care providers lack consistent health promotion for victims of sexual assault, especially in rural settings. Research has shown that efforts to help victims of sexual assault during the initial crisis, and in follow-up care, reducing harmful and expensive residual effects. This study describes the design and implementation of a sexual assault forensic examiner program for rural settings that reduces risks to the victim. A model of health addresses the psycho-social and forensic needs of victims and barriers to expert care, as well as demonstrates ways to reduce costs for …

The Relationship Between Cynicism And Dispositional Attributions: Examining Individual Differences Of Police Officers, Jennifer L. Weimer
The Relationship Between Cynicism And Dispositional Attributions: Examining Individual Differences Of Police Officers, Jennifer L. Weimer
Student Work
Previous research has shown that veteran police officers are more cynical than less experienced police officers. Research has also shown that veterans are more likely than less experienced officers to make dispositional attributions for the actions of suspects in interpersonal disputes. This study examined these two premises and the relationship between cynicism and attributions. Participants included 127 police officers and 70 undergraduate students who completed a cynicism scale and were then asked to read two scenarios depicting interpersonal disputes. Participants answered several questions pertaining to their attributions of responsibility and their perceptions of credibility of the suspect and the victim …

"Moral" or "character" education is neither a discrete curriculum added as an afterthought nor an unreflective activity, such as "community service, " that has never been probed for its meaning. Truly moral education, the authors maintain, is an intellectual undertaking that must infuse the entire school.
Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson
Mandatory Community Service: Citizenship Education Or Involuntary Servitude?, Susan M. Anderson
Service Learning, General
A popular topic of conversation lately among parents, educators, policymakers, students and the media is the isolation of young people from their communities. Many people feel schools have a responsibility to build bridges among diverse populations of children and youth, provide nonviolent problem-solving experiences and promote positive activities for young people, even during after-school hours. Involving young people in community service is seen as one potential solution. Indeed, some citizens and educators would like to ensure that all students — including those least likely to participate voluntarily but most likely to benefit from the experience — have the opportunity to …
Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod
Reporting Crimes Against Juveniles., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod
Crimes Against Children Research Center
The American justice system is in the midst of an effort to evaluate and reform its handling of the criminal victimization of children and youth. Juveniles are unusually vulnerable to crime victimization (Hashima and Finkelhor, 1999), but concerns have been raised about the effectiveness and sensitivity of the justice system’s response to these crimes. The findings presented in this Bulletin indicate that a majority of victimizations of juveniles ages 12 to 17 are not being reported to police or other authorities. Even serious victimizations involving weapons and injury are significantly less likely to be reported when they happen to juveniles …

The Impact Of Neighborhoods, Schools, And Malls On The Spatial Distribution Of Property Damage, Teresa C. Lagrange
The Impact Of Neighborhoods, Schools, And Malls On The Spatial Distribution Of Property Damage, Teresa C. Lagrange
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Using data obtained from three different sources, principles derived from routine activities theory are used to predict the distribution of minor property crimes in a medium-sized Canadian city during a 1-year period. Mischief and vandalism incidents recorded by the local police, transit department, and department of parks and recreation are aggregated by census enumeration area using mapping software, and analyzed in relation to three sets of predictors: (1) neighborhood demographic characteristics; (2) the proximity of shopping malls; and (3) the proximity of public and Catholic senior and junior high schools. Similar patterns observed for the three types of damage …

The United States Federal Law Enforcement Response To Increased Drug Smuggling On The Southwest Border, Even Rosenthal
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In recent years the United States Southwest Border has had a tremendous increase in drug smuggling from Mexico to the United States. Various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have stepped up their efforts to combat this increased influx of narcotics into the United States. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States Customs, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) are the lead agencies combating the drug trade.

Public Trust And Confidence In The Courts: What Public Opinion Surveys Mean To Judges, David B. Rottman, Alan Tomkins
Public Trust And Confidence In The Courts: What Public Opinion Surveys Mean To Judges, David B. Rottman, Alan Tomkins
Alan Tomkins Publications
In August 1998 a comprehensive national survey added to the growing mass of information on how the public perceives the state courts. The “Perceptions of the U.S. Justice System,” commissioned by the American Bar Association, relied on telephone interviews of 1,000 American adults selected at random. The respondents were asked for their opinions about “the justice system,” lawyers, judges, law enforcement and the courts. The findings from the ABA survey were optimistic relative to most of the previous surveys. Public confidence in the courts relative to other major institutions seemed higher, and experience with courts appeared to promote higher rather …
