Türkisch Und Deutsch: Shifting Understandings Of The German, The Citizen, And The Foreign, Isabelle Arden Mudge
Türkisch Und Deutsch: Shifting Understandings Of The German, The Citizen, And The Foreign, Isabelle Arden Mudge
Senior Projects Spring 2018
This paper follows the history, role, and perception of Turkish-Germans as Germany developed into an immigrant country but remained with a narrow concept of Germanness. I explain how the country did not historically consider itself a nation of immigration, apparent in its citizenship requirements, lack of coherent immigrant policy, and pushback against foreigners. Germany still has difficulty seeing those with different backgrounds as German; an intricate system of exclusion has developed over the years, changing and evolving but remaining in place.

This project focuses on three main topics and their “changes” in recent years. Chapter I focuses on the first topic, the relationship between the State of China and the State of Zhoushan, as well as the tension on fishing, tourism, and economic growth between these two states. Chapter II focuses on labor and class division at the Zhoushan fish market. Chapter III focuses on tourism and economy at ZhouShan. Fieldwork was conducted in two seasons: the first during the summer of 2017 at the Zhoushan fish market, and the second during the winter of 2017 at the Minsu in …
Labor Market Immigrant Integration And Employment: An Analysis Of Eu Countries, Iro Gkrimpizi
Labor Market Immigrant Integration And Employment: An Analysis Of Eu Countries, Iro Gkrimpizi
Senior Projects Spring 2018
This Senior Project advances the immigrant integration debate, examining the effect of labor market immigrant integration policies on the European labor force. Building on an existing body of literature that examines the migration and immigrant integration debate, this paper assesses the relationship between immigrant integration policies in the EU and the employment rate of the total, non-EU, low-skilled, young, old, and female labour force, by using panel data at the EU level to answer the question, “Can the labor market integration of immigrants lead to positive labor market outcomes as expressed by the employment rate?”. The relationship between labor market …
American Idyll: A Place To Call Home, Bowen Walsh Fernie
American Idyll: A Place To Call Home, Bowen Walsh Fernie
Senior Projects Spring 2018
I was raised in Italy from the age of five and when I returned to the United States at eighteen, I was surprised by the way I was affected by the landscape I had never known or explored. I found myself drawn to American culture as it is stereotypically represented in movies and TV - the quaint houses, the schools with cheerleaders and locker rooms, the drive-in movie theaters – and began to examine how those stereotypes are reflected in the real world. From this initial interest I began exploring the American space that I envisioned myself inhabiting throughout my …

The Unwilling Spectator: How Secondary Exposure To Trauma Through Journalism Affects Our Emotional Processing, Chanya Riddick
The Unwilling Spectator: How Secondary Exposure To Trauma Through Journalism Affects Our Emotional Processing, Chanya Riddick
Senior Projects Spring 2018
Police-brutality, especially directed towards black people, has been a hot-button issue in the media for the past few years. With the constant exposure to the death and brutalization of black bodies, however, some people, especially black people, have reported experiencing emotional defects as a result of these reports. The current study aims to see how exposure to police-brutality related journalism affects implicit emotional processes, such as approach-avoidance motivations. More specifically, the current study seeks to see if the race of the person whom police-brutality is directed towards in these journalistic reports further influences these effects. From a college-aged population, black …
The Village Of Hope: Community Reformation In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Milan Miller
The Village Of Hope: Community Reformation In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Milan Miller
Senior Projects Spring 2018
As an interdisciplinary senior project, this anthropology and film thesis investigates the social- cultural impact of community reformation post-disaster and the role of Musicians’ Village, a neighborhood formed after the storm, in post-Katrina New Orleans. I believe that the story of New Orleans cannot be told without the traditional Black cultural preservers at the center of its narrative, therefore I examine how the formation of Musicians’ Village in post-Katrina New Orleans contributes to our understanding of the post-disaster recovery of New Orleans and the role of its cultural preservation. To do proper research about Musicians’ Village, I found it both …
Thrilled Or Chilled: Exploring Factors Of Horror Movie Enjoyment, Katharine Miyajima Lynn Hochswender
Thrilled Or Chilled: Exploring Factors Of Horror Movie Enjoyment, Katharine Miyajima Lynn Hochswender
Senior Projects Spring 2018
Horror movies have become more popular than ever in recent years and with media becoming an all-consuming part of our daily lives, this study proposes to examine some of the factors that contribute to so many people choosing to attend films that aim to scare them. Five variables were chosen, based on previous studies on horror movie viewership, that would contribute to filling gaps in the existing literature. The Dark Triad traits of psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism were hypothesized as having a positive correlation with horror movie enjoyment and a lower physiological response during the viewing of a horror movie …

Plus Ça Change, Plus C’Est La Même Chose: The Introduction Of ‘Soft’ De-Radicalisation Policy In France, Isobel Monique Coen
Senior Projects Spring 2018
This paper analyzes the 2015 introduction of ‘soft’ de-radicalisation policies in France, which were intended as a departure from traditional security-based ‘hard’ policies, and assesses the role of the French government as an actor in de-radicalisation efforts. The paper will look at key facets of French political culture, including laïcité and communitarianism, and the experience of Muslim communities in France. In evaluating the ‘soft’ measures introduced in France, particularly the Numéro Vert and de-radicalisation centers, the paper identifies that ‘soft’ measures rely on the same security and police-based measures as ‘hard’ policies, and, in turn, have the same effect on …
"I'Ll Listen To Anything But Country Music" The Limits Of Musical Omnivorousness: A Study Of Listening Preferences At The Root Cellar, Aurélia S. Le Vacon
"I'Ll Listen To Anything But Country Music" The Limits Of Musical Omnivorousness: A Study Of Listening Preferences At The Root Cellar, Aurélia S. Le Vacon
Senior Projects Spring 2018
This research, conducted at a musical safe space called the “Root Cellar”, looks at the recent emergence of a new form of aesthetic preferences, called omnivorousness, that challenges Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of taste as only following an elitist model. This study understands the concept of the habitus as something that can evolve with time and social experiences. Moreover, I found that omnivorousness (eclectic taste) isn’t as musically inclusive as past studies have claimed. Omnivorousness is reinforced by technology, with the creation of online music streaming platforms. The mobility and privatization of listening spaces that emerge from technological progress generate new …
