Carbon Footprint Of An Academic Organization: A Case Study Of The Department Of Environmental Of Environmental Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, Boonjira Janangkakan, Orathai Chavalparit, Premrudee Kanchanapiya

Applied Environmental Research

This paper presented the carbon footprint evaluation of an academic institution, direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were calculated. The major sources of GHG emissions were classified into four main categories, which were energy use, materials use, transportation, and waste (wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal). The aim of this research was to evaluate the GHG emissions of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Chulalongkorn University and to develop alternative options for reduction of the GHG emissions using the Life Cycle Assessment Methodology as a key factor. The result showed that the total carbon footprint of the department based on …

Phytoplankton Community In Cage Culture Farm Areas In The Andaman Coast Of Thailand, Suwat Tanyaros, David Crookall Jan 2012

Phytoplankton Community In Cage Culture Farm Areas In The Andaman Coast Of Thailand, Suwat Tanyaros, David Crookall

Applied Environmental Research

Fish excretory products from cage culture farms combine with nutrients released from the breakdown of excess feed to raise nutrient levels well above normal, creating an ideal environment for phytoplankton blooms. This study was carried out in the Andaman Coast of Thailand to elucidate (a) the impact of cage farms on phytoplankton production, and (b) how water quality affects the phytoplankton community in the area. Phytoplankton and water quality were monitored in cage culture farms from April 2007 to May 2008 in four provinces, (Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun) along the coast of the Andaman Sea, in southern Thailand. Phytoplankton …

Environmental Performance Of Marble Tile Life Cycle, Nachawit Tikul Jan 2012

Environmental Performance Of Marble Tile Life Cycle, Nachawit Tikul

Applied Environmental Research

Accurate data and information about life cycle environmental impacts of building materials are critical for environmental-friendly building design. This paper reports the findings of environmental impacts assessment of marble tiles produced in Thailand. The life cycle assessment (LCA) approach was employed and the ecoindicator 95 methodology was used in the assessment. Six impact categories were assessed; global warming, acidification, ozone depletion, eutrophication, winter smog, and summer smog. The results show that manufacturing phase contributes the highest impacts compared with other phases of the marble tile life cycle, and the block cutting process is the greatest contributor. Transportation of finished products …

India's Neoliberal Progress And Food Insecurity, Surat Horachaikul Jan 2012

India's Neoliberal Progress And Food Insecurity, Surat Horachaikul

Asian Review

Two decades ago India's then finance minister and current prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh set India on a new course of liberalization, privatization and globalization. This paper argues that the economic reform of 1991 was based on the concept of progress in the philosophy of neoliberalism, realized through the typical structural adjustment imposed by the World Bank and IMF, combined with Manmohan Singh's own vision of reform. This paper also evaluates the effects of neoliberal reform on food security in India. Despite high economic growth as measured by traditional GDP, food insecurity in India has shown little or no signs …

An Excuse For Common Goods: The Multipurposeness Of The "Human Security" Concept In Japan's Foreign Policy, Teewin Suputtikun Jan 2012

An Excuse For Common Goods: The Multipurposeness Of The "Human Security" Concept In Japan's Foreign Policy, Teewin Suputtikun

Asian Review

This article examines the functions of the concept of human security in Japans foreign policy. Tracing the process by which Japan internalized the idea into policy formation and public discourse, the article shows that human security as a concept has served multiple purposes in the national quest for appropriate international roles. On one hand, the concept is used to resist the twin forces pulling Japanese roles away from the desirable status quo. These forces are the external pressure for a more active military contribution from Japan; and the domestic constraint against contribution policy in general. On the other hand, the …

Human Security And Chinese Political Economy, Vorasakdi Mahatdhanobol Jan 2012

Human Security And Chinese Political Economy, Vorasakdi Mahatdhanobol

Asian Review

This article examines how China looks at the issue of human security and the change of their internal and external policies toward human security. Chinas repressive regime is now having a hard time maintaining itself while trying to enter into the world market. Opening up the country involves applying international versions of human rights for their citizens, adjusting their production system to suit international standards, cooperating with foreign countries, and so on. Changes that came with economic liberalization are shifting China into a new phase of development and governance with problems of ethnic conflict, corruption, and abuse of authority by …

Environment, Conflict, And Security Problems In Thailand's Tenth National Economic And Social Development Plan, Supamit Pitipat, Surat Horachaikul Jan 2012

Environment, Conflict, And Security Problems In Thailand's Tenth National Economic And Social Development Plan, Supamit Pitipat, Surat Horachaikul

Asian Review

This paper illustrates the connection between environmental problems, social conflict, and security problems, both individual's security and state's security. It argues that environmental and security problems are not a result of natural resource depletion, environmental degradation, or of a failed state only, but are also caused by the modern sovereign state exercising its rights to possess and manage natural resources over the rights of community. There are two factors that lead to social conflicts and that question the state's legitimacy, which will eventually become a legitimacy problem that challenges the state's security. These factors are: the lack of public governance …

Utilization Of Silica Waste To Replace Silica Fume For Mixed Mortar, Petchporn Chawakitchareon, Natthapol Sresthaolarn Jan 2012

Utilization Of Silica Waste To Replace Silica Fume For Mixed Mortar, Petchporn Chawakitchareon, Natthapol Sresthaolarn

Applied Environmental Research

This research investigated the utilization of silica waste to replace the imported condensed silica fume for the production of ready mixed mortar. The silica waste was classified using sieve analysis procedures in order to achieve a high degree of fineness with a spherical shape and average particle size of 3.2 microns. Classified silica waste was used to replace 10 % volume content weight of Type I Portland cement to produce ready mixed mortar. In addition, the samples of condensed silica fume obtained from a representative supplier were also used to produce ready mixed mortar by replacing 10 % cement by …
