Habit Reversal Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa, Ken Small
Habit Reversal Treatment Of Bulimia Nervosa, Ken Small
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although several writers have emphasized the habit-like characteristics of bulimia nervosa, no study has investigated the extent to which bulimia responds to treatment specifically for habit disorders. Habit reversal is a general treatment plan which teaches individuals to regain lost awareness of all aspects of a habit. The habit is then interrupted at the earliest movement in the chain by a physically competing response. Habit reversal (Azrin & Nunn, 1973) has been effective in treating other habits (e.g., stuttering, tics, bruxism). In the present study, habit reversal was adapted for the treatment of bulimia.

A Comparison Between Desensitization And Relaxation Training In The Treatment Of Primary Dysmenorrhea, Susan Myrna Jones Carcelli
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The use of relaxation, desensitization, and relaxation plus desensitization in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea was investigated in this study. Subjects were 45 university women who experienced either congestive or spasmodic dysmenorrhea. Each subject was individually treated in four, one-hour sessions during the first 20 days of her menstrual cycle. Subjects were divided into three groups: Group 1 obtained four hours of progressive relaxation training, group 2 was asked to self-relax while being administered scenes from a standardized menstrual hierarchy, and group 3 obtained both relaxation training and desensitization. Type of dysmenorrhea was assessed by the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ). …

Predicting Length Of Stay And Outcome In Long-Term Residential Treatment Of Male Alcoholics, Robert Dombey Wadsworth
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine which characteristics of male alcoholics are related to treatment success and length of stay in long-term treatment, and (2) to assess the efficacy of predicting outcome and length of stay on the basis of patient characteristics, The study was performed post hoc on 265 patients discharged from a 6- to 12-month residential alcoholism program on the grounds of a state hospital. After an extensive literature review, 19 predictor variables were selected which were most consistently related to outcome and length of stay in previous studies of shorter rehabilitation programs. Data for …

An Overview Of Virginia Satir's Method Of Family Therapy And An Evaluation As To Its Use In The Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Field, Katherine A. Startzman
Honors Theses
The family, mistakenly perceived as an inert system in our culture, is in reality a dynamic and constantly evolving unit both in structure and function. More quickly than ever before, the roles family members play, values, and beliefs are changing. (1975, p. 18) Since the Industrial Revolution, there has been a move from an agrarian to an urban society along with rapid economic and social change which has had a major impact on all institutions. New values in family living have emerged. The nuclear family was considered ideal. The institutional family of rural society, with its subordination of the wife …
Ego Strengthening Hypnotic Suggestions Versus Specific Hypnotic Suggestions In The Treatment Of Obesity, Richard A. Hutchison
Ego Strengthening Hypnotic Suggestions Versus Specific Hypnotic Suggestions In The Treatment Of Obesity, Richard A. Hutchison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A comparison was made of two types of hypnotic suggestions. Twenty seven subjects in two groups participated in eight weekly one-hour group hypnotic sessions. All subjects were given the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, and were weighed pre, post and at four month follow-up. Both types of hypnotic suggestions were equally effective in helping individuals lose weight. The average weight loss was 10 pounds at follow up. Both groups showed improvement on the personality tests. Those who received the ego-strengthening hypnotic suggestions showed more improvement and more long lasting improvement than did those who received the specific …

Referrals To Mental Health Treatment Facilities, Laura A. Dummit
Honors Papers
This paper is organized into three main sections. The first is a review of the literature which serves as a theoretical background for this research. Social context is examined with its implications for defining problems in terms of mental or emotional concerns. Certain personal limitations on seeking help are discussed. The literature dealing with specific referral sources to mental health treatment are examined. The second section contains impressions gained from interviews with mental health professionals about the importance of the referral source on their evaluations of a client. They responded to questions about what people come to them, what information …
A Comparison Of Three Treatments For The Outpatient Alcoholic, Michael J. Telch
A Comparison Of Three Treatments For The Outpatient Alcoholic, Michael J. Telch
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The abuse of alcohol is a complex behavior pattern exhibited by approximately nine million people in this country (Tarter & Sugarman, 1976) and has become a field of interest to science, industry, and the helping professions.
Estimates of spontaneous recovery among alcoholics vary drastically. In 1971 the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism began sponsorship of a comprehensive alcoholism treatment program located in 45 community centers throughout the nation. Using a multiple criterion measure of improvement, their report (Rand Corporation, 1976) estimated the rate of spontaneous improvement for alcoholics to be as high as 53%. In reviewing the rates …
Hsus Spotlights Circus Cruelty
Hsus Spotlights Circus Cruelty
Close Up Reports
Who can deny the sense of excitement the young and the young-at-heart feel when the circus comes to town? The sounds, smells, and attractions create a fantasy world where everything is fun.
But is it all good clean fun? Evidence in recent years suggests quite the contrary. The worst problems seem to be with the smaller circuses. In the past year, The HSUS has assisted several local societies investigating cruelty to animals in traveling circuses, rescued elephants and lions abandoned by a circus, and signed three complaints against one of the largest of today's small big tops.
According to Frantz …

The Self-Recording Of Weight And Bites In The Treatment Of Obesity, Cris Quayle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effects of self-recording bites and weight on subsequent weight was assessed utilizing a single-subject design. Subjects were exposed to a similar sequence of conditions which included: (1) weekly weigh-ins, (2) self-recording daily weights, (3) a control for observation, (4) self-recording bites, and finally (5) a reversal condition in which subjects stopped recording bites but continued recording weights and meeting for weekly weigh-ins. No significant weight reductions occurred in conjunction with weekly weigh-ins, self-recording daily weights, or the control for observation. Five of the six subjects lost more than 2 pounds while recording bites along with monitoring daily weights and …

Trauma And The Use Of Formal And Informal Resources In The Deaf Population: Perspectives From Mental Health Service Providers, Stephanie W. Cawthon, Bentley W. Fink, Paige Johnson, Sarah Schoffstall, Erica Wendel
JADARA
Using grounded theory analysis, the current study identifies the perspectives of therapists and counselors regarding the nature of informal and formal resources supporting the treatment of deaf individuals with trauma. Nineteen counselors and therapists were interviewed, and accessibility, formal support, informal networks, and gaps in resources were identified as salient themes. Subsequent analysis identified concerns with confidentiality as a strong theme. This study emphasizes the need for counselors and therapists to become mindful of utilizing resources to support the treatment of trauma while being concerned with confidentiality.
