Expenditures And Receipts In State And Local Government Finances: Reply, Michael L. Marlow, Neela Manage Dec 1988

Expenditures And Receipts In State And Local Government Finances: Reply, Michael L. Marlow, Neela Manage

Economics

Chowdhury (1988) adopts an alternative technique to test for causality between expenditures and receipts of state and loyal governments and claims that he obtains results that are different from those reported in our 1987 paper (Marlow and Manage, 1987). We disagree with many of his criticisms. In this reply, we argue that he misinterprets our results and policy implications and that his results are really not much different from ours; in fact, sometimes his results provide stronger support of our hypothesis.

State Psychological Associations, Licensing Criteria, And The “Master’S Issue”, Robert H.I. Dale Dec 1988

State Psychological Associations, Licensing Criteria, And The “Master’S Issue”, Robert H.I. Dale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The psychological associations in the 50 states and the District of Columbia were surveyed with regard to their membership structure and the status of master's-level members. Most (31) of these associations closely follow the membership criteria established by the American Psychological Association, allowing associate membership for master's-level personnel, whereas 15 associations provide full membership for such personnel. A minority (17) of the state psychology boards provide some form or licensing or certification for master's-level personnel, and 5 more states provide for registration of such personnel. It is argued that the structures of state psychological associations reflect a tension between two …

Locus Of Control As A Predictor Of Rehabilitation Potential In Hearing-Impaired Individuals, Kevin T. Hillard Dec 1988

Locus Of Control As A Predictor Of Rehabilitation Potential In Hearing-Impaired Individuals, Kevin T. Hillard

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

To facilitate successful vocational rehabilitation services to clients it is helpful to make accurate diagnosis as to which clients will have the best chances of success. The present paper examines the locus of control construct as a predictor of rehabilitation potential in hearing-impaired individuals. Hearing-impaired individuals were found to have relatively high external orientations when compared to normally hearing individuals. It is suggested that unique developmental processes in the hearing-impaired may lead to the formation of external orientations. Implications are made regarding the development of a rehabilitation prediction model for the hearing-impaired. Therapeutic implications for changes in locus control are …

Health And Social Service Needs In A Northeastern Metropolitan Area: Ethnic Group Differences, Paul D. Cleary, Harold W. Demone Jr. Dec 1988

Health And Social Service Needs In A Northeastern Metropolitan Area: Ethnic Group Differences, Paul D. Cleary, Harold W. Demone Jr.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Data from a representative sample of Boston area residents were analyzed to examine differences among ethnic populations in perceived needs and use of services for eight problem areas. The areas studied were: employment problems; financial problems; problems of the aged living alone; alcohol problems; personal; family or marital problems; child behavior or education problems; the need for homemaker services; and the need for a home nurse. The results indicate substantial differences between perceived needs and reported use of services, and both those factors varied by ethnic identification.

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

The increasing variety in full text databases and wider availability means a variety of users and uses. Recent research has suggested that full texts are being used for many different reasons, including: document location, fact retrieval, paragraph retrieval, browsing, and document delivery. The studies reported in this paper show that search strategies may need to differ for different uses or for different types of full text. The reported studies focus on full texts of non-technical magazine articles.

Group I performed continuous horizontal bounds. Group II performed a combination of continuous horizontal and vertical bounds. Group III executed continuous vertical bounds, and Group IV was the control group and they did not receive any training. The duration of the training sessions was six-weeks. Each subject was pretested and post-tested on vertical and horizontal jumping …

Reflections On Econometric Methodology, Peter C.B. Phillips Dec 1988

Reflections On Econometric Methodology, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

General issues about the methodology of empirical econometric research are discussed. It is argued that the most successful paradigms for applied work are the ones that have a capacity to survive and to evolve into more useful forms as these are needed. Paradigms that embrace progressive modeling principles, such as those espoused by David Hendry, seem most amenable to this criterion. It is also argued that econometric theory has a large role to play in helping us to understand the strengths and the weaknesses of a methodology and to codify what its prescriptions entail. The time series methodology of David …
