This is a thesis dealing with moral judgment in adolescents. Specifically, the study tests the efficacy of cognitive conflict and reinforcement as agents of moral growth in adolescents. The purpose of the investigation is to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for development in moral reasoning.

Kohlberg (1958) has presented a systematic theory of moral growth in children, adolescents, and adults. He defined moral judgment as "the child's use and interpretation of rules in conflict situations and his reasons for moral actionsf (Kohlberg, 1964, p. 394)." This study was designed to test the responses of a group of juvenile delinquests and a group of normal adolescents to a sentence completion test. The test used was a modified form of Sack's Sentence Completion test in two forms--form A, first person stems and form B, third person stems. The hypothesis to be tested were (1) people project more in the third person, (2) the normal projects more, and (3) there would be no difference in projection on neutral items. The results bear out the three hypothesis. The sex scale, however, was an exception. This may be due to …

A study of "Juvenile Delinquency in Worcester" was made by Albert H.N. Baron of Clark University in May 1906. Worcester was then a city of about 130,000 inhabitants and Baron's study covered the period from 1901 to May 1906. The period chosen in the present study is from May 1907 to April 1910 and Worcester at this writing has a population of about 146,000. The present study is intended to supplement Baron's to April 1, 1910, except for the interval between May 1906 and June 1907. The city of Worcester, Massachusetts is in the list of middle-sized cities. It now (in 1906) has a population of over 130,000 and may be taken as a representative manufacturing city. As a concrete local study, the present investigation of juvenile delinquency in Worcester has been undertaken with this three-fold object in view -- to ascertain -- 1st, the extent and character of juvenile offenses; 2nd, the present mode of dealing with them; and 3rd, the changes or improvements that might be suggested by a comparison with the methods in vogue elsewhere.
