Environment And Affect: Toward An Emotional Geography Of Student Persistence, Jamison R. Miller, Michael Donlan Nov 2014

Environment And Affect: Toward An Emotional Geography Of Student Persistence, Jamison R. Miller, Michael Donlan

The William & Mary Educational Review

Student persistence is a perennial problem for higher education. From lost revenue for colleges and universities to lost opportunity and development for students, educational scholars have had much incentive to examine the problem. In this paper, we review some of the prominent assessments of student persistence in research from various theoretical perspectives. Further, we explore how scholars have studied environmental factors in persistence and to a lesser extent student affect, yet we find the relationship between these two to be only lightly engaged in the literature. The emerging discipline of emotional geography offers to draw out new insights at the …

The Effect Of Brand And Caloric Information On Flavor Perception And Food Consumption In Restrained And Unrestrained Eaters, Kevin V. Cavanagh, Blina Kruja, Catherine A. Forestell Nov 2014

The Effect Of Brand And Caloric Information On Flavor Perception And Food Consumption In Restrained And Unrestrained Eaters, Kevin V. Cavanagh, Blina Kruja, Catherine A. Forestell

Arts & Sciences Articles

The goal of the current study was to determine whether provision of brand and caloric information affects sensory perception and consumption of a food in restrained (n = 84) and unrestrained eaters (n = 104). Using a between-subjects 2 × 2 × 3 design, female restrained and unrestrained eaters were asked to taste and rate a cookie that was labeled with a brand associated with healthful eating (Kashi®) or one associated with unhealthful eating (Nabisco®). Additionally, some participants were presented with a nutrition label alongside the brand name indicating that one serving contained 130 calories (Low-Calorie Condition), or …

Additive Effects Of Repetition And Predictability During Comprehension: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials, Wing-Yee Chow, Sol Lago, Shannon Barrios, Daniel Parker, Et Al. Jun 2014

Additive Effects Of Repetition And Predictability During Comprehension: Evidence From Event-Related Potentials, Wing-Yee Chow, Sol Lago, Shannon Barrios, Daniel Parker, Et Al.

Arts & Sciences Articles

Previous research has shown that neural responses to words during sentence comprehension are sensitive to both lexical repetition and a word’s predictability in context. While previous research has often contrasted the effects of these variables (e.g. by looking at cases in which word repetition violates sentence-level constraints), little is known about how they work in tandem. In the current study we examine how recent exposure to a word and its predictability in context combine to impact lexical semantic processing. We devise a novel paradigm that combines reading comprehension with a recognition memory task, allowing for an orthogonal manipulation of a …

Relationship Between Alcohol Dependence, Escape Drinking, And Early Neural Attention To Alcohol-Related Cues, Cheryl L. Dickter, Catherine A. Forestell, Patrick J. Hammett, Chelsie M. Young May 2014

Relationship Between Alcohol Dependence, Escape Drinking, And Early Neural Attention To Alcohol-Related Cues, Cheryl L. Dickter, Catherine A. Forestell, Patrick J. Hammett, Chelsie M. Young

Arts & Sciences Articles

Rationale

Previous work has indicated that implicit attentional biases to alcohol-related cues are indicative of susceptibility to alcohol dependence and escape drinking, or drinking to avoid dysphoric mood or emotions.

Objective

The goal of the current study was to examine whether alcohol dependence and escape drinking were associated with early neural attentional biases to alcohol cues.

Methods

Electroencephalography data were recorded from 54 college students who reported that they regularly drank alcohol, while they viewed alcohol and control pictures that contained human content (active) or no human content (inactive).

Results

Those who were alcohol dependent showed more neural attentional bias …

In Tastes, Lost And Found: Remembering The Real Flavor Of Fat Pork, Brad Weiss Apr 2014

In Tastes, Lost And Found: Remembering The Real Flavor Of Fat Pork, Brad Weiss

Arts & Sciences Book Chapters

"Fat". In contemporary society the word never fails to elicit powerful emotions, especially as it relates to bodily health and appearance. But fat is a noun as well as an adjective and has a cultural life outside of its relationship with the human body. By focusing on the complex physical and experiential dimensions of this problematic substance, Fat: Culture and Materiality breaks new ground in the study of the relationship between culture and the material world.

With contributions from well-respected international scholars, this innovative and interdisciplinary collection will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in fat and its …

Private Governance, Hegemonic Struggles, And Institutional Outcomes In The Transnational Cotton Commodity Chain, Amy Quark Apr 2014

Private Governance, Hegemonic Struggles, And Institutional Outcomes In The Transnational Cotton Commodity Chain, Amy Quark

Arts & Sciences Articles

Transnational firms have rolled out new forms of private governance at the same time as the rise of new economic powerhouses like China has fomented growing inter-state tensions. This points to critical questions: how does inter-state competition shape private governance of transnational commodity chains and how does private governance shape inter-state rivalries? I explore these questions by tracing the construction and dissolution of sectoral hegemonic coalitions that govern commodity chains. Drawing on the case of cotton quality governance from 2000-2012, I argue that a coalition of the U.S. state and transnational merchants has reconstituted its sectoral hegemony to allow expanded …

Development Of A Large-Scale Storm Surge And High-Resolution Sub-Grid Inundation Model For Coastal Flooding Applications: A Case Study During Hurricane Sandy, Jon Derek Loftis Jan 2014

Development Of A Large-Scale Storm Surge And High-Resolution Sub-Grid Inundation Model For Coastal Flooding Applications: A Case Study During Hurricane Sandy, Jon Derek Loftis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Coastal inundation initiated via storm surge by hurricanes and nor'easters along the U.S. East Coast is a substantial threat to residential properties, community infrastructure, and human life. During and after the storm, compounding with heavy precipitation and upland drainage, inundation can be caused by the combination of storm surge and river-induced inland flooding in various locations throughout the coastal plain. Thus, coastal inundation can be expanded from the open coast upstream into the tributaries of the New York Bay including the Hudson and East River systems. Given the cross-disciplinary nature of the dynamics (encompassing hydraulics, oceanography, and hydrology), and the …

Honoring The Ancestors: Historical Reclamation And Self-Determined Identities In Richmond And Rio De Janeiro, Autumn Rain Duke Barrett

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation focuses on how history is made meaningful in the present. I argue that within the United States and Brazil, historic narratives and sites are employed in legitimizing and contesting past and contemporary social inequity. National, regional, and local narratives tell the stories of how communities and their members came to be who and where they are in the present. Social hierarchies and inequity are naturalized and/or questioned through historic narratives. Formative education includes telling these stories to children. Commemorative events and monuments tell and re-tell stories to community members of all ages. Enculturation of historical identities, the positioning …

Measuring Fidelity Of Implementation Using The Survey Of Enacted Curriculum, Edward Sean Mcdonough Jan 2014

Measuring Fidelity Of Implementation Using The Survey Of Enacted Curriculum, Edward Sean Mcdonough

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The proper implementation of a curricular program is crucial in ensuring that the curricular content and learning intentions are delivered to students consistently and reliably. This being the case, it is essential that newly adopted curricular initiatives are evaluated for fidelity to the program's original standards. Currently, state and federal regulations require teachers to use instructional programs that have been shown to be effective through "scientifically based research" (Stavin, 2003). to satisfy the "scientifically based research" requirement of NCLB, curricular programs undergo rigorous efficacy and effectiveness testing to ensure that the program's standards are indeed valid. to further measure the …

Assessing The Effects Of Workplace Aggression And Normative Unethical Behaviors On Counselors' Perceptions Of Ethicality Using An Integrative Understanding Of Morality, Eleni Maria Honderich Jan 2014

Assessing The Effects Of Workplace Aggression And Normative Unethical Behaviors On Counselors' Perceptions Of Ethicality Using An Integrative Understanding Of Morality, Eleni Maria Honderich

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Acting ethically is a core facet of the counseling profession's identity, safeguarding clients from undue harm (ACA, 2005). Through an increased understanding of both detrimental and positive factors that can influence counselors' perceptions of ethical behaviors, the counseling profession can intervene accordingly; this knowledge may assist in managing the problem related to unethical infractions. However, ethical behavior is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon, leaving many factors to be explored and examined. Workplace aggression, exposure to normative unethical behaviors, and an integrated modal of morality constitute some of these factors that warrant further investigation. A dearth of research currently exists within …
