Public Education In Richmond : A Look At Current And Historical Data With Student Perspectives, Ben Wallerstein Jan 1999

Public Education In Richmond : A Look At Current And Historical Data With Student Perspectives, Ben Wallerstein

Honors Theses

The objective of this project is therefore three-fold, (1) to analyze the current as well as historical patterns of racial distribution and educational outcomes in the Richmond metropolitan area, (2) to provide current students with this data, and (3) to create an opportunity for dialogue on the data across school, racial and economic boundaries. This project takes an important first step in developing the type of interaction and leadership that will be essential for the success of future regional cooperation in Richmond. At the very least, this report should serve as a base-point to inform future discussions on issues of race, …

The Legitimacy Of Leadership Studies As An Academic Field Of Study, Megan Moran, Joy Shortlidge Jan 1999

The Legitimacy Of Leadership Studies As An Academic Field Of Study, Megan Moran, Joy Shortlidge

Honors Theses

Before exploring the legitimacy of leadership studies as an academic field of study, we will first explore the characteristics of a liberal arts education and establish its legitimacy (through historical analyses) as the "standard" of higher education in America, and the educational approach most associated with cultivating an enlightened citizenry in a democratic society. Once the legitimacy of a liberal arts education is established, this form of education will serve as the benchmark to which we will compare leadership studies. We will apply the same criteria that established the legitimacy of a liberal arts education to the field of leadership …

Bursting The Bubble : A University Of Richmond Student's Passport To The City Of Richmond, Hillorie Anne Leaman Jan 1999

Bursting The Bubble : A University Of Richmond Student's Passport To The City Of Richmond, Hillorie Anne Leaman

Honors Theses

This project began with a very specific idea (to tell students about the city of Richmond) and ended up raising questions that apply to all colleges and universities, but particularly metropolitan colleges and universities whose students are generally not from the immediate area. The research presented here is generally tailored to apply to the program and opportunities at the University of Richmond and in the Richmond area. However, through data collection and learning information about what other colleges do, in addition to reviewing literature that applies to all colleges, I believe that the most logical next step is to begin …

Washing Feet : A Revolutionary Principle Of Leadership, Josh Hayden Jan 1999

Washing Feet : A Revolutionary Principle Of Leadership, Josh Hayden

Honors Theses

The teachings of Jesus were a leadership paradox. He said that to live one must die; to be first one must be last, to move up, one must move down, and to become rich, one must become poor. If we look at people, problems, situations and life itself through the eyes of this astounding Galilean carpenter, there are unlimited things we can learn about leadership. In the process, we also learn about ourselves, our motivations, our weaknesses and strengths, and our ability or inability to command a following that will have a lasting impact. Each of these areas are critical …

Birth Order And Emergent Leadership : Does One's Birth Order Influence Emergence As A Leader In A Leaderless Group?, Leanna May Bowman Jan 1999

Birth Order And Emergent Leadership : Does One's Birth Order Influence Emergence As A Leader In A Leaderless Group?, Leanna May Bowman

Honors Theses

This study was initiated as an attempt to understand how personalities affect emergence in a group as the leader. What makes other group members accept one person as the leader over another? Because birth order has been discussed as an influential factor in the development of ones personality, this variable was chosen in order to see if perhaps leader emergence from a group is influenced by the personality, which, in turn, has been shaped by something else.

This study proved that firstborns and firstborn by genders emerge from a leaderless group to guide and direct the other members, and shape …

The Changing Landscape Of America's Societal Sector, Denise Harb Jan 1999

The Changing Landscape Of America's Societal Sector, Denise Harb

Honors Theses

This paper will outline the changes in the nonprofit sector since 1945 and will attempt to show that these changes are the result of various shifts in the contextual environment in which the sector has developed. This review of the history of the nonprofit sector will trace the influence of such factors as World War two and the controversy which surrounded foundations mainly until the 1960s. Other contextual factors include more academic transformations such as the influence of Keynesian economic theory and the 1960's research on the roles of mediating structures in American democracy.

A Proposal For Leadership Consulting, Jess Timmerman, Raegan Williams Jan 1999

A Proposal For Leadership Consulting, Jess Timmerman, Raegan Williams

Honors Theses

In the course of the past two decades, the study of leadership has increasingly found its proponents in a variety of contexts. From academic circles to non-profits and corporate industries, leadership studies is rapidly becoming a topic of paramount import. As this evolution occurs, students of leadership studies find themselves highly sought-after for positions in a myriad of fields. Increasing, too, is the need for students of leadership studies to find and develop additional links to industries and corporations traditionally reserved for students of other academic areas. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the leadership curriculum in the Jepson School of …

The Juvenile Justice System Of Richmond : Progression Into The Future, Elizabeth Ann Teixeira Jan 1999

The Juvenile Justice System Of Richmond : Progression Into The Future, Elizabeth Ann Teixeira

Honors Theses

The area of juvenile justice in America is a growing concern among both urban and rural community leaders. According to the Community Collaborative for Youth, the juvenile violent crime rate in Richmond is triple the state average. 1 The juvenile violent crime rate is the percentage of violent crime committed by a person under the age of eighteen. This is merely one aspect of the adversity facing the juvenile justice system in the eyes of the community. As a result of the growing need for information on the subject, a great deal of literature has been published about the risk …

Leadership 'N' Cultural Anthropoloty : A Course Outline, Gabriel D. Soll Jan 1999

Leadership 'N' Cultural Anthropoloty : A Course Outline, Gabriel D. Soll

Honors Theses

In turning Twain's kaleidoscope and looking through the light of the social sciences a new combination of colored glass comes into view. The overlap of the glasses, which are the study of leadership and the study of culture, shines through as a vibrant combination of older ideas in a new configuration. It is the vision of this new mosaic, and the belief that the academic world provides one of the best ways not only to explore, but to disseminate new ideas that I have decided to undertake the creation of a course designed for any student interested in either field. …

Born And Made: Sisters, Brothers, And The Deceased Wife's Sister Bill, Elisabeth Rose Gruner Jan 1999

Born And Made: Sisters, Brothers, And The Deceased Wife's Sister Bill, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

English Faculty Publications

We are--almost all--born into families, born into relationship. Like Mary Ann Evans, I was born a little sister--but had I encountered her "Brother and Sister" sonnets at twelve, I might have thrown the book across the room. George Eliot's fantasy of a perfected brother-sister relationship in these sonnets rings hollow and yet resonates profoundly with me. As a little sister myself, I wonder what could make the relationship--so often fraught with competition, envy, and neglect, yet potentially so richly rewarding--seem so powerfully right, so important to and adult woman's self-identification? For the narrator of the sonnets is certainly an adult …
