Henry Austin Peck was born in 1921 in Somerville, Mass. and graduated from Tufts College in 1942. He received his master's degree and Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts where he was also named to Phi Beta Kappa. Before joining the University of Maine faculty in 1948 he was an instructor in economics at Tufts and also was director of veterans' housing at that college. In 1961 he was named vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maine. In 1968 he was named president of the State University of New York at Potsdam. …

Finding Aids

This record group contains the papers of William Peirce Randel, a professor of English at the University of Maine, born on January 7, 1909, in New York City. Papers include manuscripts for various books, articles, and talks authored by Randel. Also, includes correspondence, research materials, drafts of articles, and copies of Maine legislative documents concerning higher education. The correspondence, dates primarily from 1962-1992, and included both incoming letters and copies of outgoing letters involving various Maine politicians, especially William S. Cohen. The correspondence concerns current events of the time including higher education, world affairs, and issues of aging.

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Local ecological knowledge, or the collective perceptions held by a particular group about their environment, results from the transmission of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next, combined with regular and persistent interactions between individuals and the biophysical environment. Management systems that limit access to certain natural resources likely have an effect on the quality of that knowledge. We explore the distribution of local ecological knowledge as it corresponds to different types of fishing activities and experience among fishermen in the eastern Gulf of Maine. Maine Policy Review

Maine has experienced major challenges over the last decade including recession, stagnant recovery, and industrial and population decline. But by some measures, Maine is still seen as one of the best in the United States for well-being. In this paper, we critique the notion of what well-being is and how it is measured. Based on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Better Life Initiative, we then propose and construct an index to compare well-being across Maine counties. The Hyde Amendment: An Obstacle To Seeking Abortion Care In Maine?, Olivia Pennington

This thesis is an examination of the effects of the Hyde Amendment on lower-income people in the State of Maine seeking abortion care. The Hyde Amendment, passed in 1976, prohibits any federally funded insurance from covering abortion services unless the pregnancy results from sexual assault or incest, or if the pregnancy places the pregnant person’s life in danger. This thesis aims to examine how not having an abortion covered by insurance exaggerates other financial obstacles to receiving abortion care.
