Phonology, Geoffrey S. Nathan Jan 2015

Phonology, Geoffrey S. Nathan

Geoffrey S. Nathan

This paper will discuss the ways in which Cognitive Grammar (CG) has integrated the fundamental concepts of phonology. Phonology has traditionally been the neglected stepchild of CG, in part because the initial excitement of CG revolved around the insightful semantic analyses of what had previously been thought to be purely syntactic or arbitrary lexical puzzles, and phonology is, by definition, about meaningless units. Additionally, phonology deals with the coordination of motor activity and auditory perception, areas that initially didn’t seem to lend themselves to the conceptual tools of CG.

Unlike much work on syntax and semantics, research within several of …

Intersectionality And Planning At The Margins: Lgbtq Youth Of Color In New York, Clara Irazabal, Claudia Huerta Jan 2015

Intersectionality And Planning At The Margins: Lgbtq Youth Of Color In New York, Clara Irazabal, Claudia Huerta

Clara Irazabal

Through an intersectional lens, this article reflects on the dialog between planning and gender, feminist, and queer studies to analyze the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color (YOC) community in New York City (NYC). The community is subject to multiple disenfranchisements, given their ethno-racial status, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation. This community's limited access to safe public spaces and amenities, housing, health services, job training, and other opportunities is an urban planning challenge insufficiently understood or addressed. Our methodology includes participant observation and analysis of an LGBTQ YOC tour of West Village in NYC, interviews …

Health Disclaimers And Website Credibility Markers: Guidance For Consumer Health Reference In The Affordable Care Act Era, Deborah H. Charbonneau

Deborah H. Charbonneau

This article reports on the current state of health disclaimers, online health resources, and credibility markers provided on public library websites (N = 105) for those seeking health information. In light of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), these findings have implications for consumer health reference services in public libraries. Approximately half of the public library websites in the study sample (n = 52, 49.5%) referred users to the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace website (HealthCare.gov). When referring to online consumer health resources, a small number of public library websites identified the authors of online health content (n = 16, 15.2%) or …

Civil Society At The Negotiation Table, Legitimacy Beliefs And Durable Peace, Direnç Kanol Dr. Jan 2015

Civil Society At The Negotiation Table, Legitimacy Beliefs And Durable Peace, Direnç Kanol Dr.

Direnç Kanol

It is argued that including civil society at the negotiation table can increase the perceived legitimacy of peace treaties. As a result, it can contribute to the consolidation of peace. In this paper, the author presents the findings from a controlled experiment in order to test the impact of inclusive peace negotiations on the perceived legitimacy of peace treaties. Contrary to the expectations of the scholars working on the inclusiveness and the consolidation of peace hypothesis, the results show that the treatment group in the experiment does not perceive inclusive peace agreements to be more legitimate.

Elasticity Of Substitution And The Stagnation Of Italian Productivity, Enrico Saltari, Daniela Federici Jan 2015

Elasticity Of Substitution And The Stagnation Of Italian Productivity, Enrico Saltari, Daniela Federici

Enrico Saltari

The aim of this paper is to investigate the roots of the stagnation in the Italian total factor productivity (TFP). The analysis focuses on the specific pattern of technical progress in determining the dynamics of the TFP. This analysis cannot be done with Cobb-Douglas technology, but requires the employment of a constant elasticity of substitution (CES) production function that allows distinguishing between the direction and the bias of technical progress. We employ a CES specification embodying both labor- and capital-augmenting technical change, with a σ less than 1. We obtain three main results. (1) There seems to have been a …

Roads And Resources: Groundwater Depletion In Lankao Country In The North China Plains, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Xiangzheng Deng, Yazhen Gong, Martino Pelli, Zhang Qian Jan 2015

Roads And Resources: Groundwater Depletion In Lankao Country In The North China Plains, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, Xiangzheng Deng, Yazhen Gong, Martino Pelli, Zhang Qian

Ujjayant Chakravorty

China produces most of its food grains in the North China Plains. However, there is evidence that groundwater aquifers in this region are being overexploited. We use a unique GIS-referenced dataset of the depth of the water table for all the 12,000 odd tube wells in Lankao county. We find that the construction of new highways has led to a depletion of the water table in wells close to the highways. This relationship is robust to a variety of controls, including distance to river and primary canals, village and township fixed effects, the date of drilling of the well and …

How Do Gamblers Maintain And Illusion Of Control?, Elizabeth Cowley, Donnel A. Briley, Colin Farrell Jan 2015

How Do Gamblers Maintain And Illusion Of Control?, Elizabeth Cowley, Donnel A. Briley, Colin Farrell

Donnel A Briley

Gamblers' enduring illusions of control (IOC) may be one reason why they continue to gamble in the face of sustained losses. If gamblers persist in the belief that they have special skills, knowledge and other advantages when gambling, they may be able to convince themselves it is worth doing again. Maintaining an IOC requires selective attention of the illusion supporting moments during the construction of an evaluation of a gambling session. Objective: Test the hypothesis that selected moments, specifically the moment of the highest win and the last moment of the gaming session, explain the retrospective evaluation of the session for …

Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler Jan 2015

Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler

Christine Wamsler

The concept of ecosystem-based adaptation is advocated at international, national, and regional levels. The concept is thought to foster sustainability transitions and is receiving increasing interest from academic and governmental bodies alike. However, there is little theory regarding the pathways for its systematic implementation. It furthermore remains unclear to what degree the concept is already applied in urban planning practice, how it is integrated into existing planning structures and processes, and what drivers exist for further integration. Against this background, this study examines potential ways to sustainably mainstream ecosystembased adaptation into urban planning. Eight municipalities in Southern Germany were investigated …

Abstract Global urbanization creates opportunities and challenges for human well-being and transition towards sustainability. Urban areas are human-environment systems that depend fundamentally on ecosystems, and thus require an understanding of the management of urban ecosystem services to ensure sustainable urban planning. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic review of urban ecosystems services research, which addresses the combined domain of ecosystem services and urban development. We examined emerging trends and gaps in how urban ecosystem services are conceptualized inp eer-re viewed case study literature, including the geographical distribution of research, the development and use of the urban …

Providing User Preferred Information Resources For A New Faculty Of Agriculture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria, Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr, Uche Andrew Ogbonna

Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr

Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria was established as a federal government financed university on August 1992. Because the university was unprepared to start any agriculture program at that time, there were limited provisions for agricultural information services. However, in 2010 the University established a Faculty of Agriculture; to prepare the university library to serve this group, a survey was carried out to ascertain the faculty’s library literacy status as well as their information needs. e result showed that, among other things, members of the new Faculty preferred hybrid (electronic and print) library services and were open to innovative social …

Towards Ex Ante Prediction Of User Performance: A Novel Neurois Methodology Based On Real-Time Measurement Of Mental Effort, Ricardo Buettner, Sebastian Sauer, Christian Maier, Andreas Eckhardt Jan 2015

Towards Ex Ante Prediction Of User Performance: A Novel Neurois Methodology Based On Real-Time Measurement Of Mental Effort, Ricardo Buettner, Sebastian Sauer, Christian Maier, Andreas Eckhardt

Christian Maier

We propose a methodology of an ex ante prediction of users’ performance based on analyzing the pupillary diameter variability captured by ordinary eye-tracking systems. Based on a realistic large-scale experimental evaluation of our methodology we show promising results that pave the way for a dynamic real-time adaption of IT to the user’s mental effort and the expected user performance. Our non-invasive contactfree methodology can be applied cost-efficiently both in research and practical environments, without disturbing the participant/user.

The Effects Of Technostress And Switching Stress On Discontinued Use Of Social Networking Services: A Study Of Facebook Use, Christian Maier, Sven Laumer, Christoph Weinert, Tim Weitzel Jan 2015

The Effects Of Technostress And Switching Stress On Discontinued Use Of Social Networking Services: A Study Of Facebook Use, Christian Maier, Sven Laumer, Christoph Weinert, Tim Weitzel

Christian Maier

Although much research has been performed on the adoption and usage phases of the information systems life cycle, the final phase, termination, has received little attention. This paper focuses on the development of discontinuous usage intentions, i.e. the behavioural intention in the termination phase, in the context of social networking services (SNSs), where it plays an especially crucial role. We argue that users stressed by using SNSs try to avoid the stress and develop discontinuous usage intentions, which we identify as a behavioural response to SNS-stress creators and SNS-exhaustion. Furthermore, as discontinuing the use of an SNS also takes effort …

Efficient Contextualism, Juliet P. Kostritsky, Peter M. Gerhart Jan 2015

Efficient Contextualism, Juliet P. Kostritsky, Peter M. Gerhart

Juliet P Kostritsky

This Article recommends an economic methodology of contract interpretation that enables the court to maximize the benefits of exchange for the parties and thereby enhance the institution of contracting. We recommend a methodology that asks the parties to identify the determinants of a surplus maximizing interpretation so that the court can determine whether the determinants raise issues that need to be tried. We thus avoid the false choice between textualist and contextualist methodologies, while allowing the parties and the court to avoid costly litigation. For textualist courts, our methodology helps the judge determine when the terms the parties used are …

Foreign Language Assessments And Interpretive Communication: A Literacy-Based Perspective, Kate Paesani Jan 2015

Foreign Language Assessments And Interpretive Communication: A Literacy-Based Perspective, Kate Paesani

Kate Paesani

This presentation proposes a reconceptualization of interpretive communication through the lens of foreign language (FL) literacy and the multiliteracies framework. The communicative modes and multiliteracies frameworks are similar because they suggest curricular goals for FL programs grounded in cultural content and adopt a broad understanding of communication in which language modalities are overlapping. They differ because the multiliteracies framework additionally outlines a pedagogical approach that puts into practice goals, content, and communication and foregrounds texts as the core content of FL courses. Indeed, the literacy-based learning processes of interpretation, collaboration, problem solving, and reflection expand our understanding of how learners …

Reageren Op Problematisch Wetenschappelijk Gedrag Voorbij De Moralisering : Een Ander Wetenschapsbeleid Is Mogelijk !, Serge Gutwirth, Jenneke Christiaens

Serge Gutwirth

In deze bijdrage gaan we in op een aantal vragen die rijzen bij het reageren op wetenschapsfraude. In een eerdere bijdrage -"It's the science policy, stupid !

Les Sciences Et Leurs Problèmes : La Fraude Scientifique, Un Moyen De Diversion ?, Serge Gutwirth, Jenneke Christiaens Jan 2015

Les Sciences Et Leurs Problèmes : La Fraude Scientifique, Un Moyen De Diversion ?, Serge Gutwirth, Jenneke Christiaens

Serge Gutwirth

Sustainable Urban Open Green Spaces: Opportunities And Challenges, Mehdi Rakhshandehroo, Mohd Johari Mohd Yusof, Osman Mohd Tahir, Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos Jan 2015

Sustainable Urban Open Green Spaces: Opportunities And Challenges, Mehdi Rakhshandehroo, Mohd Johari Mohd Yusof, Osman Mohd Tahir, Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos

mrakhshandehroo@yahoo.com

Shortage of open green spaces has become a common concern in today’s compact cities. Based on the literature review, urban open green spaces provide different dimensions of sustainability because of opportunities for social, environmental, and economic benefits which contribute to quality of life in cities. Urban development and renewal should be accompanied with a greening vision, to insert more plantable spaces into the urban fabric. Therefore sustainable urban planning, design and management are needed to improve urban greening strategy. In order to enhance urban greenery, innovative and creative ideas should be applied in urban management, for instance informal open green …

Origin And Evolution Of The Term "Entrepreneur" In English, Steven Kates Jan 2015

Origin And Evolution Of The Term "Entrepreneur" In English, Steven Kates

Steven Kates

The words we use depend on the words that exist. There is now an entity for which we use the word “entrepreneur” that has been brought into English from the French. This paper describes both its slow drift into English and then the drift in its meaning in English which even now cannot be entirely pinned down. Previously, the word “undertaker” had been used in English which, apart from its other connotations, is a near equivalent but not identical in its use and meaning. This adoption of the French term provides an interesting example of the way in which words …

Towards Culturally Competent Professional Practice: Exploring The Concepts Of Independence And Interdependence, Wesam Darawsheh, Gill Chard Jan 2015

Towards Culturally Competent Professional Practice: Exploring The Concepts Of Independence And Interdependence, Wesam Darawsheh, Gill Chard

Gill Chard

Health and social care practitioners increasingly work with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. While health and social care systems have emphasized the importance of culturally competent practice, professional practice has been influenced by values such as independence, a western notion that places value on the individual. It has been suggested that interdependence, a notion that places value on the family and/or community, can serve as an alternative to independence in culturally diverse practice. Using interviews

Avoiding The Guillotine: The Need For Balance And Purpose In Determining Fundamental Rights Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Timothy A. Campbell Jan 2015

Avoiding The Guillotine: The Need For Balance And Purpose In Determining Fundamental Rights Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Timothy A. Campbell

Timothy A Campbell

This Article examines the need to bridge the two fields of thought in fundamental rights jurisprudence. This Article argues two points. Broadly, an objective principle to determine fundamental rights is non-existent because rights by their nature are subjective. Hence, the Court must accept some subjectivity, but it needs to install guideposts to direct the judge’s discretion. The Court also needs to adopt a balanced approach that combines rationalism and traditionalism. They need to look at the purpose of the asserted right, the specificity of the asserted right, legal precedent, and history in formulating a balanced approach.
