Building A Dementia Friendly Community, Elizabeth Marvin, Marty Williman Apr 2015

Building A Dementia Friendly Community, Elizabeth Marvin, Marty Williman

Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education Conference

In 2007 the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter and The Hancock County Agency on Aging began discussing ways to create a dementia friendly community. Several county agencies, businesses and organizations quickly joined in to develop mission and vision statements; coalition structure and membership; and specific goals toward creating a community that is aware, accepting, supportive and inclusive of individuals and families living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in Ohio. In 2007 and to date, there are few dementia capable community models from which to base efforts. Lessons learned, unexpected outcomes, and successes will be shared with the audience, as …

Older Adults Attitudes Towards New Communication Technologies, Ladonne Wilson

Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education Conference

As the amount of New Communication Technologies (NCTs) being created increases at an exponential rate it is important to better understand how all portions of our population take advantage of newer NCTs, including older adults. This study sought to better understand older adult’s attitudes towards NCTs as a means of learning and adaption as well as maintaining independence. The researchers argued that older adult’s attitudes toward NCTs have an effect on older adult’s perceived and therefore actual usability. This study was conducted by a communication research methods course at an Ohio public university and it included surveys and interviews of …

Restructuring The Sense Of Nation In The Culture Of Imagined Communities Through Bollywood, Shrinkhala Upadhyaya Feb 2015

Restructuring The Sense Of Nation In The Culture Of Imagined Communities Through Bollywood, Shrinkhala Upadhyaya

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies

Restructuring the sense of nation in the culture of imagined communities through Bollywood

Unarguably, Bollywood (Hindi cinema) has spread its wings and continued its legacy to be the second most popular film center of the world after Hollywood, and successfully made its impact globally (Punathambekar, 2013). Two of its remarkable productions, DilwaleDulhaniya Le Jaenge(DDLJ, The Brave Heart Will Take the Bride, 1995) and Purab aur Paschim (PAP, East and West, 1970) are still cherished. The paper will talk about these two movies representing the idea of nationalism before and after globalization, thereby creating sense of nation in the idea …

Postcolonial Disability In Mohesen Makhmalbaf’S Kandahar, Sukshma Vedere Feb 2015

Postcolonial Disability In Mohesen Makhmalbaf’S Kandahar, Sukshma Vedere

Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies

Kandahar (2001), an Iranian film directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, details the journey of the protagonist, Nafas, to Kandahar to save her sister from committing suicide on the day of the solar eclipse. The film has gained recent attention by disability studies scholars for the representation of disability in Afghanistan; scholars have discussed the significance of prosthetics and international aid for the disabled in post-war zones of the Third World, but little has been said about disability as a postcolonial embodiment. I argue that Kandahar represents the postcolonial state as a disabled space both literally and metaphorically. It projects the veil …

The number of international students in the U.S continues growing. This study focuses on a common experience among international students on university campuses: their names are misspelled or mispronounced by cashiers or workers at on-campus coffee stores. The researchers chose a Starbucks at a Midwestern mid-size University as a site to conduct this study.

It is possible for anybody to have their name misspelled or mispronounced. Through observation and focus group, this study focuses on revealing how international students interpret the situation …

Underestimating Women In The Early Modern Atlantic World, Lindsey Bauman Jan 2015

Underestimating Women In The Early Modern Atlantic World, Lindsey Bauman

International ResearchScape Journal

This essay examines the limiting gender roles of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as depicted through the detailed account of Catalina de Erauso, a Spanish woman who ran away from a convent. Disguising herself as a man, Catalina eventually journeyed to Chile, joined the militia, and took part in fighting against the native peoples of the region. Noted as being an exemplary warrior in the midst of battle, she was not detected as a woman until she exposed herself. By taking historical context into account, this essay argues that patriarchal society’s view of women is what enabled Catalina to impersonate …

¿Más Español Por Más Votos? Assessing The Impact Of Spanish Language Electoral Advertisements On Latino Voter Turnout, Alexander C. Ervin Jan 2015

¿Más Español Por Más Votos? Assessing The Impact Of Spanish Language Electoral Advertisements On Latino Voter Turnout, Alexander C. Ervin

International ResearchScape Journal

After Latino-Americans demonstrated their power in the 2012 presidential election, securing increased minority support at the polls has become a major goal for both main U.S. political parties. A reliable bloc of Latino voters on one’s side could mean more wins, but Latinos have a low voter turnout rate. This paper explores how to increase Latino turnout and argues that the use of the Spanish language in electoral advertising will have a positive effect. By comparing statewide Latino turnout data during the 2002 midterm elections, I find states with a sizable amount of Spanish-language get-out-the-vote messages do see slightly increased …

Radiophobia And Trauma: Examining The Lasting Effects Of The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Lydiarose Mockensturm Jan 2015

Radiophobia And Trauma: Examining The Lasting Effects Of The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, Lydiarose Mockensturm

International ResearchScape Journal

The Fukushima nuclear disaster of March 2011 – unlike the earthquake and tsunami leading up to it – was not experienced directly or immediately for many. Its effects were, however, experienced belatedly, in the form of displacement and radiophobia, which have had a significant psychological impact on survivors. Moreover, excessive media coverage of the disaster allowed it to have a global impact not seen during previous nuclear disasters. Shion Sono’s film The Land of Hope, released in Japan in October of 2012, helps to illustrate the traumatic nature of a nuclear crisis through issues such as dislocation, media coverage, …

Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney

International ResearchScape Journal

This essay explores the impacts of the United States government and military in the civil war in El Salvador in a comprehensive historical study. Through the presence of monetary aid, a disregard for the human rights of people in El Salvador, and the presence of U.S. trained soldiers at the then School of Americas and the current Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the U.S. prolonged and augmented the negative effects of the Salvadoran Civil War.

Chinese Educational Reforms: Transition Of An International Powerhouse, Jane Powell Jan 2015

Chinese Educational Reforms: Transition Of An International Powerhouse, Jane Powell

International ResearchScape Journal

It has been almost everywhere in the media: The People's Republic of China has a powerhouse of an education system. Only a few years ago were Americans being bombarded with advertisement campaigns, outlining the vast disparity between American and European or Asian testing scores [AR1] [JP2] in math [AR3] [JP4] and science. Now, there is a new discussion. Although the current Chinese system is effective for producing excellent test scores, many project that the rigidity will eventually only hinder China, that a lack of encouragement and space for creativity in Chinese students’[AR5] [JP6] educational careers will result in a …

The Coca Plant And Bolivian Identity, Matthew G. Russo Jan 2015

The Coca Plant And Bolivian Identity, Matthew G. Russo

International ResearchScape Journal

ABSTRACT

The political battle rages between the U.S. government, the U.N. and the Bolivian President, Evo Morales, about his efforts to protect, legalize and preserve the symbol of the Andean indigenous identity: the coca plant. The human rights of indigenous populations are being violated by culturally insensitive governments in compliance with U.S. and U.N. law. The questions posed are: Is coca cocaine? What are the economic benefits of the production of coca and who benefits? What is the relationship between coca and Bolivian identity? What would be the impact in the global community if coca is eradicated permanently?

Hiroshima’S Hibakusha: The Costs Of Human Health In A Nuclear Age, Jane Powell Jan 2015

Hiroshima’S Hibakusha: The Costs Of Human Health In A Nuclear Age, Jane Powell

International ResearchScape Journal

At the end of World War II, Japan, as well as the rest of the world, was thrust into a new age of unbelievably destructive possibilities: the first use of nuclear weapons against human beings. Not only could such a bomb flatten an entire city, it could do so in only an instant. The poorly understood scars that were left showed a new level of war that the world needs to come to terms with. By considering the many medical effects of the atomic bomb on the victims of Hiroshima City, which encompasses the initial blast, radiation, and traumatic effects, …

Generating sentences from a library of signs implemented through a sparse set of key frames derived from the segmental structure of a phonetic model of ASL has the advantage of flexibility and efficiency, but lacks the lifelike detail of motion capture. These difficulties are compounded when faced with real-time generation and display. This paper describes a technique for automatically adding realism without the expense of manually animating the requisite detail. The new technique layers transparently over and modifies the primary motions dictated by the segmental model, and does so with very little computational cost, enabling real-time production and display. The …

Bridging The Divide: Using Utaut To Predict Multigenerational Tablet Adoption Practices, Kate Magsamen-Conrad Jan 2015

Bridging The Divide: Using Utaut To Predict Multigenerational Tablet Adoption Practices, Kate Magsamen-Conrad

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

This study examined the “Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology” (UTAUT) in the context of tablet devices across multiple generations. We tested the four UTAUT determinants, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions, to determine their contributions for predicting behavioral intention to use tablets with age, gender, and user experience as moderators. 899 respondents aged 19-99 completed the survey. We found consistent generational differences in UTAUT determinants, most frequently between the oldest and youngest generations. Effort expectancy and facilitating conditions were the only determinants that positively predicted tablet use intentions after controlling for age, gender, and …

This study extends Uses and Gratifications theory by examining the uses and gratifications of a new technological device, the tablet computer, and investigating the differential uses and gratifications of tablet computers across the life-span. First, we utilized a six-week tablet training intervention to adapt and extend existing measures to the tablet as a technological device. Next, we used paper-based and online surveys (N=847), we confirmed four main uses of tablets: 1) Information Seeking, 2) Relationship Maintenance, 3) Style, 4) Amusement and Killing time, and added one additional use category 5) Organization. We discovered differences among the five main uses of …
