Separate Spaces Discourse About The 2007 Scottish Elections On A National Newspaper Web Site, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

In May 2007, Scots voted into office a party and a political leader publicly committed to holding a referendum on independence from Great Britain within four years. This study analyzes nearly forty-eight hundred comments appended to stories on the scotsman.com Web site, offering one of the first detailed looks at user-generated content on a newspaper-affiliated Web site in the context of a national election. It explores the evolving nature of online political community and the ways in which newspapers are accommodating a networked environment in their political coverage, addressing issues of citizen and journalistic engagement within a communal space

Was Financial Market Contagion The Source Of Economic Crisis In Asia? Evidence Using A Multivariate Var Model, Ahmed Khalid, Masahiro Kawai Sep 2009

Was Financial Market Contagion The Source Of Economic Crisis In Asia? Evidence Using A Multivariate Var Model, Ahmed Khalid, Masahiro Kawai

Ahmed Khalid

The episodes of financial crises in many parts of the world during the 1990s have sparked interest in identifying channels through which such crises spread from one country to another. Researchers have identified several factors that may have sparked and induced contagion. This study further extends the existing research by identifying and testing three financial market variables to trace the alleged origin and the subsequent path of the contagion during the 1997 Asian Crisis. Foreign exchange rates, stock market prices and interest rates are three main financial market indicators, representing the currency, stock and money markets, respectively. We use a …

Representations Of Alana In Computer And Video Games, Jeffrey Brand, Jakub Majewski, Scott Knight Sep 2009

Representations Of Alana In Computer And Video Games, Jeffrey Brand, Jakub Majewski, Scott Knight

Scott J. Knight

A new way to view race in media is presented in a nuanced picture that sometimes defies simple racial dichotomies. It explores the racial characterization of the heroes and she-roes of various video games. The potential for more balanced and fair representations of ALANA [African, Latin, Asian, Native American] is perhaps greater in CVG's [computer and video games] than in the traditional media. However, only small advances have been made in offering choice and a range of character roles for ALANA while eschewing traditional media stereotypes.

Advancing Disciplinary Practice Through Critical Thinking: A Rejoinder To Bensley, Stephen Yanchar, Brent Slife, Russell Warne Aug 2009

Advancing Disciplinary Practice Through Critical Thinking: A Rejoinder To Bensley, Stephen Yanchar, Brent Slife, Russell Warne

Russell T Warne

The authors respond to Bensley’s (2009) comment on their alternative formulation of critical thinking in psychology (Yanchar, Slife, & Warne, 2008). They argue that Bensley’s defense of the traditional critical thinking approach—which they term scientific analytic reasoning (SAR)—fails to address their main objections to SAR and their reasons for presenting an alternative. In particular, the openness, fairness, and generativity that Bensley references as strengths of SAR are themselves informed by scientific analytic assumptions and values, which, they argue, illustrates their original contention—that SAR offers an insular and insufficiently critical approach to critical thinking. The authors conclude by calling for future …

Examination Of The Mmpi-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) Validity Scales In Civil Forensic Settings: Findings From Simulation And Known Group Samples, Dustin Wygant, Yossef Ben-Porath, Paul Arbisi, David Berry, David Freeman, Robert Heilbronner Aug 2009

Examination Of The Mmpi-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) Validity Scales In Civil Forensic Settings: Findings From Simulation And Known Group Samples, Dustin Wygant, Yossef Ben-Porath, Paul Arbisi, David Berry, David Freeman, Robert Heilbronner

Dustin B. Wygant

The current study examined the effectiveness of the MMPI-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath and Tellegen, 2008) over-reporting indicators in civil forensic settings. The MMPI-2-RF includes three revised MMPI-2 over-reporting validity scales and a new scale to detect over-reported somatic complaints. Participants dissimulated medical and neuropsychological complaints in two simulation samples, and a known-groups sample used symptom validity tests as a response bias criterion. Results indicated large effect sizes for the MMPI-2-RF validity scales, including a Cohen's d of .90 for Fs in a head injury simulation sample, 2.31 for FBS-r, 2.01 for F-r, and 1.97 for Fs in a medical …
