Recent neuroimaging research shows that older adults exhibit recruitment, or increased activation on various cognitive tasks. The current study evaluated whether a similar pattern also occurs in semantic memory by evaluating age-related differences during recognition of Recent (since the 1990s) and Enduring (1950s to present) famous names. Fifteen healthy older and 15 healthy younger adults performed the name recognition task with a high and comparable degree of accuracy, although older adults had slower reaction time in response to Recent famous names. Event-related functional MRI showed extensive networks of activation in the two groups including posterior cingulate, right hippocampus, temporal lobe …

SUMMARY OF PROJECT What did I do? A study of the role the U.S. stock markets and money markets have possibly played in the Gross Private Domestic Investment (GPDI) of the United States from the year 1959 to the year 2001 and I created a Multiple Linear Regression Model (MLRM).
Stepping Back From Social Norms Campaigns: Comparing Normative Influences To Other Predictors Of Health Behaviors, Michelle Campo, Kenzie Cameron
Stepping Back From Social Norms Campaigns: Comparing Normative Influences To Other Predictors Of Health Behaviors, Michelle Campo, Kenzie Cameron
Michelle L. Campo
Recent health campaigns on college campuses have used a social norms approach, which suggests that one's perceptions of others' attitudes and behaviors are the key components in attitude and behavior change. However, the efficacy of social norms campaigns has been mixed. This study was conducted to assess the relationships among sociodemographics, normative perceptions, and individual attitudes on 3 health behaviors. Students at 2 universities (N = 393) completed questionnaires assessing how these variables related to their consumption of alcohol, tobacco use, and exercise behaviors. Regressions indicated that each of these variables was associated with behavior, but varied independent variables emerged …
Externality Effects Of Residential Property Values: The Example Of Noise Disamenities, David Clark
Externality Effects Of Residential Property Values: The Example Of Noise Disamenities, David Clark
David E. Clark
Studies conducted by the Federal Railroad Administration in the 1990s reveal that train whistle bans lead to higher accident rates at train crossings. However, advocates of these bans argue that they eliminate noise externalities that have a detrimental effect on residential home values. To assess this latter claim, an event study is conducted and hedonic models are estimated for three different areas in which Conrail unilaterally began ignoring local whistle bans. While the findings consistently show that proximity to rail lines has a negative and statistically important influence on home values, there is little evidence that the Conrail decision had …

All The Right Numbers: Strategies For Locating Industry Sales, Marc Vinyard
All The Right Numbers: Strategies For Locating Industry Sales, Marc Vinyard
Marc Vinyard
Total industry sales will reveal whether an industry is in its infancy, or if it has reached a mature, established stage. If businesspersons or students can obtain figures for multiple years, they will know if the industry is growing or stagnating. Forecasts can help requestors decide if they want to invest in companies within a particular industry or even start a company in that industry. Economists use industry sales figures to assess the significance of an industry for overall economic growth. Clients already involved in an industry can divide the industry's total sales by their company's sales to determine market …

How Does Health Insurance Affect Workers’ Compensation Filing?, Darius Noshir Lakdawalla, Robert T. Reville, Seth A. Seabury
Darius N. Lakdawalla
About half of injured workers choose not to file workers’ compensation claims. This is thought to result from the utilization of health insurance instead of workers’ compensation. However, the data suggest that insured workers are actually less likely to file than their more vulnerable uninsured counterparts. We find that this relationship emerges as the result of employer characteristics, and in particular, whether or not employers offer health insurance to employees; this is much more important than the insurance status of workers themselves. The workplace environment may have a significant, or even a dominant, impact on filing behavior.

Generic Skills For Hospitality Management: A Comparative Study Of Management Expectations And Student Perceptions, Michael Raybould, Hugh Wilkins
Michael Raybould
Tertiary providers of hospitality management degree programs must fulfil the needs of student, industry and academic stakeholder groups. The students attracted to this type of program tend to be motivated primarily by the anticipated vocational outcomes. As a result, hospitality management curriculum needs to meet both industry and student expectations by delivering the skill sets needed in the workplace and the institutional demands for academic rigour. This article reports on research that aimed to compare hospitality managers' expectations of graduate skills with student perceptions of the skills that hospitality managers valued. In contrast to previous research on this topic, this …

How Earth Remote Sensing From The International Space Station Complements Current Satellite‐Based Sensors, Jennifer Gebelein, Dean Eppler
Jennifer Gebelein
The International Space Station (ISS) will provide an Earth‐and space‐observing platform that will support sensors built by 16 different countries and deliver data and images for local, regional and global research. When complete, it will be an exceptional platform for conducting remote sensing of the Earth, astrophysics, and space physics research programmes. Additionally, the ISS will operate as a testbed for engineering studies and complex technological developments that will benefit future Earth‐observing capabilities. ...

We assessed the cost-effectiveness of the Rio Hondo driving-under-the-influence (DUI) court, a therapeutic court intervention in Los Angeles County targeted to repeat DUI offenders. The effectiveness of this court intervention was determined through a randomized controlled field experiment. Although prior research does not identify differences in alcohol-related or criminal behavior between treated and control individuals at follow-up, we found improvements in behavior for all program participants regardless of treatment status. A cost minimization analysis found that, on average, cost of the DUI court exceeded traditional court expenditures for second-time offenders but produced cost savings for third-time offenders. This suggests that …
