Justification, Santification, And Stewardship In Their Aims And Relation To Each Other, W. Arndt Jan 1937

Justification, Santification, And Stewardship In Their Aims And Relation To Each Other, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

''Three hackneyed terms," some one may say. "Why waste valuable time on them when there are greater subjects to discuss?" But are there? Is it not true that, If we really knew what these terms signify, if we knew not only their dictionary definition, but were thoroughly intimate with them by much contemplation, consideration, and cultivation, ''tasting, touching, and handling them," gratefully and reverently, there would be a great change in our attitude and mode of life, a rejuvenation of our spiritual energies, the suppression of the spirit of pessimism and lethargy, and the beginning of a new era of …

Outlines On The Eisenach Epistle Selections, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

At the portal of the new church-year we to-day stand in solemn awe, aware of the uncertainty of health and life and wondering what lies ahead of us. It is especially the spiritual side of our existence which is the object of our solicitous concern. Will the new year always find us firmly anchored in the wounds of Jesus, constant in faith, fervent in love, a temple of the Holy Spirit, ready to obey the final summons whenever it may come?

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder May 1936

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The formal principle of the dialectical theology is not that of the Reformation. What about its material principle? The material principle of Lutheran theology is the doctrine of justification through faith, salvation by grace.

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Enthusiasm in its gross form and Enthusiasm in its dialectical form is on evil thing. It is destructive of all assurance, of the certainty of salvation, and of the certitude of the doctrine. There can be assurance only where the objective character of redemption, the objective character of the means of grace, and the objective validity of the teaching is recognized.

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder

The principles ruling the dialectical theology are not those of the Reformation. Brunner repudiates the formal principle of Protestantism, the sola Scriptura. He refuses to accept Scripture as the sole authority, the only source and basis of doctrine. The bare words of Scripture cannot establish a doctrine. “In earlier days this discussion [concerning the Virgin Birth] used to be cut short by saying briefly, ‘It is written'; that is, with the aid of the doctrine of verbal inspiration. To-day we can no longer do this, even if we would." (P. 823.) Brunner is consistent. Since he rejects the real inspiration …

Sermon Study On 1 Pet. 2, 1-10, T. Laetsch Oct 1935

Sermon Study On 1 Pet. 2, 1-10, T. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first chapter of his epistle Peter had reminded his readers of their regeneration unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This hope had been engendered in them by the Word of God, the Gospel, which had been preached to them. Since they were regenerated by this living Word, Peter pleads with them to remain faithful in their love and desire for this Word, to grow into, and become more like unto, the Word and its perfection, to grow into ever keener understanding and fuller appreciation of the marvelous privileges offered in this Word, into an …

Unionism is a sign of the times. Alliances of nations, mergers of corporations, unions of laborers, of employers, of capitalists, consolidation of resources, collective bargaining, - these are expressions familiar to every one. In union there is strength. Union eliminates much waste, senseless competition, makes for greater economy, efficiency, service, better times. Union, cooperation, is hailed by many as the cure-all for the manifold troubles of the present day, as the best possible solution of the vexing twentieth-century problems.

In the opening verses of the fourth chapter the apostle had stated that in the latter times errorists would arise setting aside the norm of God's Word both as to doctrine and life.

Chrisitan Burial, J. A. Petersen Jul 1934

Chrisitan Burial, J. A. Petersen

Concordia Theological Monthly

The topic "Christion Burial" might on first thought appear to be a topic that rightfully belongs to the pastoral conference. It should not require so much thought to realize, however, that the right understanding of this important subject and, following upon the right understanding, the correct practice concerning Christian burial is of vital importance to the members as well as to the pastor of the congregation, especially in our day, when the opinion is steadily gaining ground that Christian burial should be denied no one, regardless of what the deceased has confessed and how he hos lived. At no time …

The Minister In The Sick-Room;, Robert Earl Jun 1933

The Minister In The Sick-Room;, Robert Earl

Concordia Theological Monthly

Disease, that indefinable, inexplicable foe the mind and body, has challenged the thought and faith of humanity since the beginning of time. The mysteriousness of its origin, the uncertainty of its outcome, the destructive result of its ravages - these are the factors that have led men to question the ways of God. It has driven men, through fear and apprehension, into every kind of superstitious practise, secret cults, charms and magic potions, votive offering or weary pilgrimages, in a pathetic attempt to appease angry spirits, to ward off noxious influences, or to counteract unknown evils.

Child Study According To The Bible, P. E. Kretzmann Dec 1932

Child Study According To The Bible, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The attitude of the Lutheran Church, specifically of our branch of the Lutheran Church, toward the Bible, is one which finds little appreciation in the world to-day. Wherever we turn, we find opposition. The Church of Rome has added to its mutilated Bible the vagaries of tradition and the claims of an "infallible" Pope. Most Protestant denominations have set aside the inspiration of the Bible or so modified the meaning of inspiration as to make the word meaningless.

Study Of The Eisenach Epistle-Lesson For The Eighteenth Sunday After Trinity, Th. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

James, in his epistle to the twelve tribes scattered abroad, does not teach salvation by works, nor does he proclaim a different way to heaven from that preached by Paul, Rom. 8, 24, and John, John 1, 19. 18, and Peter, Acts 15, 7-11, and Jesus, Mark 16, 18. James, a servant of Jesus Christ, chap. 1, 1, teaches salvation by grace through faith. Chap.1, 17.18 he speaks of regeneration though the Word by the grace of God. V. 21 he speaks of the Word as being able to save, which Word must be received, or believed. His object is …

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

The Purpose of Christian Theology

In the performance of his sacred functions the Christian theologian must at all times conscientiously keep in mind the true objective of his theological activity. The purpose of sacred theology, so far as it regards lost and perishing mankind, is not the spread of culture nor the establishment of civic righteousness on earth nor the satisfaction of the intellectual craving of the human mind nor the enrichment of human knowledge, but the eternal salvation of sinners.

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

Primary and Secondary Fundamental Doctrines.

The fundamental doctrines of the Christian religion may be divided into primary and secondary fundamental doctrines. Also this distinction is Scriptural, practical, and useful, for it helps the Christian theologian to discriminate rightly between the fundamental doctrines themselves. As we have learned, fundamental doctrines are such as constitute the foundation of the Christian faith; yet not all fundamental doctrines constitute this foundation in the same manner. Hollas rightly observes (53): "All the fundamental articles of faith must necessarily be known, but the grades of this necessity are different." …

Dr. Francis Pieper The Churchman, W H. Dau

Concordia Theological Monthly

''There is no such thing in the Christian Church as mere teaching; all teaching is to be reduced to practice. The Christian Church is not a philosophers' school, where only teaching is done, but a society of people who by faith in the Gospel and mortification of the flesh are traveling on the way to everlasting life and are commissioned to lead others into this way. True, there is also teaching done in the Christian Church, and this is done first and over continued. Doctrine is the basis for every activity of the Church. However, teaching is not the end, …

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

Christianity, the Absolute Religion

The Christian religion is the absolute religion, inasmuch as it is absolutely perfect, neither requiring, nor being capable of, improvement or supplementation. It is God-given and therefore precisely as God would have it to accomplish its beneficent purpose of "saving sinners." When we ascribe to the Christian religion perfection or absoluteness we do not mean to say that it is a "logically complete whole", or a logically complete and perfect system, in which there are no missing links of thoughts or doctrines. Considered from this viewpoint, the Christion religion …

The Nature and Constitution of Sacred Theology.

The Two Sources (Principia Cognoscendi) of the Existing Religions.

As we have seen, there are but two essentially different religions, the religion of faith, or of the Gospel, and the religion of works, or of the Law. So also there are but two actual sources (principia cognoscendi, principles of knowledge) from which these two divergent religions are taken. The religion of works is of human origin; it is a man-made religion, having its source and origin in the human heart, in which God has inscribed His divine Law, so that also the heathen, …

The Scriptural Viewpoint of the Christian Theologian.

Owing to the diverse views and tendencies prevailing among theologians to-day, it is necessary for the Christian theologian, before presenting to his readers his dogmatic treatise, to declare in clear and unmistakable terms from what viewpoint this has been written.

The viewpoint of the present-day modernistic theologian is that truth must be determined by human reason in the light of scientific research. The theological Liberalist therefore does not recognize Holy Scripture as the source and norm of faith, but bolds that this ancient standard of the Christian Church has been superseded by the …

Saving Faith In The Old Testament, Frederick L. Miller May 1931

Saving Faith In The Old Testament, Frederick L. Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

Since faith in Christ is absolutely indispensable for salvation; and since by faith in Christ the people of the O. T., like those of the N.T., must have been saved, since there is salvation in no other name (Acts 2, 42): we must be able to find this faith expressed or implied in the O.T. There is sufficient testimony in the N.T. for this faith of the people of the Old Covenant, and so for Christians our problem is no problem; but when we deal with Jews, and when we consider the matter historically, we are thrown upon the O.T. …

In glowing language the apostle had pointed out to his troubled and sorrowing fellow-pilgrims through a dark and dreary world the bright and shining star of Christian hope, every word throbbing with intense longing for the realization of his glorious vision. He had spoken of a hope which is not content with the fleeting joys and pleasures of this world, with the passing honors and glories of this · time. No, Christian hope raises its eye to the world to come and expectantly looks forward to eternity for the realization of its desires. It looks forward to "an inheritance incorruptible …

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching on the Augsburg Confession. The four-hundredth anniversary of Luther's Small Catechism, celebrated wherever the name of Luther was known, has undoubtedly been a source of richest blessing. Pastors and people become better acquainted with its history and contents, learned to appreciate this little book the more highly, and thanked God the more sincerely for this precious gift. The sermons preached on the Catechism during 1920 were not in vain, but productive of splendid results, sure as Is.55, 10. 11 still holds good. Let us hope that similar streams of blessing will flow from the celebration of the four-hundredth anniversary· …
